Hello all!
My father in law bought an Honor 8X recently as he really liked the reviews.
In fact he really loves the phone, apart from one thing.....
The led notification light is practically non-existent!! I can barely notice it even if I'm staring at it and looking for it!! It's genuinely pathetic!
I've looked at all the settings and they seem to be on and matching mine (9 lite) but my led notification light is bright and pulses, his is weak and really just a dull pin-prick hole.
Are all 8Xs like this? Is his phone defective or is there a hidden tweak that I'm missing??
Really appreciate any help you can send.

Well, this might be down to my personal preference, but i really like my notification lights to be on the subtle side.
Calling this flaw, well, more of a design choice, genuinely pathetic is really a bit on the overreacting side of things.
Also Shashank1320's answer was precise and to the point, really no need to get sarcastic. He didn't help because there is no solution to this since the phone was physically built that way.
However, in my experience with huawei/honor, my p9 lite had a slightly misaligned led light, compared with my friends' phones it was slightly duller when being loomed at head-on, but then again, i prefer it that way so didn't complain about it.
So, to sum up, you could compare it with another 8x and if it's different try to get a new one if you guys still have its warranty, but that's it.
Also, the chance of led being misaligned is pretty low so... Take a loot at Shashank1320's comment again and realize that it was (most probably) not given with any ill intent.
And even if it was, it's still the true answer.

Well, I own 10+ honor phones with me and 2 Honor 8X and I know the LED is dim and there is no solution at all as this is due to physical hardware presence. I have the same thing on my Honor 8( launched 2 years back) and there is no solution at all. Software or custom ROM can only help in getting the brighter blink or different colours for different app notification.
We deal with such sarcastic comments very often on XDA and I saw he is new to the forum so that's ok, we understand.
But, thanks again for your understanding and clarifying the things.
I have the Honor 8X Max whilst my cousin has the smaller 8X.
The 8X Max LED light is much much bigger and brighter whereas the notification light on his 8X is small and dim.

My contract is already up,and I have some questions about the note. For those of you using the note for a while. Is the note's size an issue or is it totally worth having even though the note is a very big phone? Screen quality how is it? Is it a fast phone? If you didn't have the note, would you buy it again? The size is really overblown on a lot of web reviews. It is comfortable to hold, fits into all of my pants pockets just fine, is really awesome when browsing the web, and the size allows for the larger battery.
I have had the Note for a month now and do no ever see myself returning to a smaller screen.
The resolution is beautiful, but there are some issues with gradients and dark scenes in movies so be sure to walk into a store when buying it so that you can run some tests on the phone they are going to sell you. There is a thread here about black clipping with a lot of great tests to try out. Some Notes are worse than others.
I love the call quality on the Note. The only downfall is that you really have to lower the volume while in a call unless you don't mind folks around you hearing it. The ear speaker is very loud.
As far as speed goes...that really depends on your phone. I have seen posts where people are experiencing lag even though I haven't personally experienced any of it.
I started off with the white Note, but returned it due to the soft keys having bad light bleeding at night. They can be turned off, but it bugged me so now I have the black/blue one.
Also, try out the stylus. I didn't realize it until I exchanged my Note, but the stylus on the first one was really laggy and unresponsive. I thought it just sucked until I got the second Note. It should be snappy and precise.
I am now running DAGr8's ICS rom and have turned the DPI down to 240. It really enhanced the phone by making the resolution smaller which in turn gives you more space for widgets, icons, etc.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. The Note is large, yes, but very easy to hold and get used to due to how thin it is. Screen quality is unmatched by anything out there in my opinion. The combination of Gorilla Glass, Super AMOLED, and 720p resolution are really awesome. Some people say they have lag, but I have not had or used a faster Android device. Also, if you are in an LTE area, you get that awesome speed too. If I didn't have it, I would still be drooling over it. I got lucky and got it for half off, but if I hadn't, I would still be waiting a couple months until summer to buy it, which I definitely would again. Call quality is also great, and speakerphone is also loud and clear.
Now for the other things I highly commend the Note for. The SPen is awesome. You may think it's gimmicky, but you would be wrong. It's great for jotting down quick notes while on a call. Great for making funny captions on pictures before you send them. Great for navigating the phone. Great for Swyping with the tablet Swype beta. Great for taking screenshots. Also, we now have ICS, which brings some new and exciting features, my favorite being face unlock. I really can't recommend this phone enough. People may say, wait for the gs3 or one x, but I don't see the attraction. We already have ICS, and those other phones are small compared to the Note, and won't have the SPen. You may think the size is too big, but you get used to it really easy, and my nope had now ruined any smaller of a device. Also, battery life is the best I've experienced on any Android, besides the RAZR MAXX, but who wants a Moto phone anyways?
Really, the only way I would upgrade to another phone is when the Note 2 comes out. I don't have a single complaint, and this screen is killer.

I came from a Streak, I'm a BIG guy and the phone sits well in my hands. My gf has freakishly small hands and she says it's too big for her hands, but loves the fact that she can put it into her purse and can easily find it. It does look silly holding up to your head and talking though.
Screen quality how is it?
Personally I think the screen quality is great for a 5.3" device. A lot of people are complaining about black crush (there's a good thread on it) and while it's there, personally it isn't enough to bug me, I've watched low res videos for a long time and it just doesn't bug me anymore.
Is it a fast phone?
A lot of people are complaining about lag on their phones and yes I can see it there from time to time but I run 2 RSS feed readers, 5 email accounts, 2 weather widgets, and quite a few other things. The device is speedy, I can play games like shadowgun without the hint of lag, when i tell the phone to do something it might think about it for an 1/16 of a second then away it goes. So is the phone fast? I say yes it is.
If you didn't have the note, would you buy it again?

I love it, it's clear and easy to hear people, except my gf, she has the original droid and that thing has a TERRIBLE mic and speaker. a lot of our fights have been caused by her phone . Again it does look silly when you hold it to your head, but I've never been one to shy away from looking silly.
In short, depending on what you want to do/replace with the phone I'd say buy it. I use mine to manage 100 servers and RDPing into them while on the move which it does a great job on. I can read docs on the go and pull up webpages to prove people wrong and they can read them without having to hold my phone.
Lastly, if you're in one of those great states that charge you tax on the full price of the phone (in this case 700 smackers), look for a Sam's Club. I bought my phone on release day from them for 260 and with tax it was under 300.

What I want to know is, as far as anyone can tell, is there a color or build location that seems to have fewer problems overall? I have seen a few places that people seem to think the white ones are less laggy. There was some speculation that the China Notes have less black crush. I'm pretty color neutral on these. I just want to be able to look at the box and get a sense that the one they give me has a better chance of being issue free.

First, Black Crush is not fixed in ICS, they just lowered the point of full black so it would appear better. The dropoff is still severe, but it is less noticeable. I don't own the device but I have been following these things very closely.
Second, I did not come up with the color thing. It is based off what I was reading. In this case it is not at all like painting flames and expecting something to go faster. They very well might come off different assembly lines with different QA and different physical runs of parts. I know its a longshot, but that is why I am asking if anyone can verify. I realize it is more likely that the Chinese vs. Korean Notes may exhibit some differences. Again, I am asking in the Q&A section to be sure.

From what I've read the only issue that seems different between the white and black is the micro crack that people have in the white ones. It seems spread wide on who has a good one and who has a bad one. So to be fair I can understand where studacris is coming from on the color. As for the black crush, I can't say either way as I'm running completely stock non-rooted, but I'd imagine that if it's hardware related then no it wouldn't be fixed with ICS, if it's software related, other phones would be experiencing the same issue. Lastly I guess a good question would be who bought their phone where and if it's running poorly or not to see if there's a correlation with the batches.

I had a Streak for over a year, and I wouldn't have replaced it with a device with a smaller screen. Think about what you do/want to do with your mobile device. If you mostly use it for talking on, than maybe the Note is not for you. But if you do a lot of email, Web surfing, navigation, playing games, etc. than after you've used a Note for a week you'll never want to use a smaller device again, and you'll wonder how you ever did before
I have a white one and my phone rarely shows any lag, and my quadrant scores ate just as high as anybody's...not that wouldn't means much, but people seem to obsess over it. There isn't any difference between the two except that micro crack thing, although I'm sure that could also be a problem with the black version. I say that, because a similar crack would be nearly impossible to see in black plastic. When I had my old iPhone 3g, I exchanged it multiple times due to the problem that they had with cracking around all of the ports, and it was really only visible with the white ones. I looked at multiple black ones that friends had, and they all had the cracks, but you basically had to look at them with a magnifying glass in the right light to see the cracks. Therefore, I think it may be the same case with the Note.
Really, I can't recommend this phone enough. I dare a manufacturer to try and top it, because that would be a hell of a feat in my eyes.

Light bleed
Terrible battery life ( Max of 5 hours SOC )
crappy buttons on the side
The back creaks slightly
Is it worth returning or do you think I'll get the same issues again or maybe worse?

I suggest you to wait. As far as I know it's a matter of luck of getting a device with none of the known defects. Older and younger builds do have defects.

Turn down the brightness. Its a big screen, the brighter its set, the less the life. And 5 hours screen on is HUGE.

I quite like the buttons on these things, bit harder to press so you have to really mean it. Nexus 7 is a problem because it is too easy to accidentally bump the buttons.

Definitely not worth returning. All you do by returning, is make the next version more expensive for the rest of us by costing HTC and Google for your pointless warranty claim.

Are you ****ing kidding me here? Ya let's let ALL these issues go, so the NEXT tablet that comes out is an even bigger piece of **** with more problems because people like you let them get away with it.
Let me ask you this, should we accept ALL light bleed as OK no matter how bad, or is there a cutoff at some point where its no longer acceptable? Right off the bat I'll tell you youre wrong because they don't ALL do it. I just returned a nexus 9 that had next to 0 light bleed. I've never, not once in my life exchanged a device for any reason. Never. But im on my 4th nexus 9, 2 of which had almost no light bleed at all. My last ones screen flickered so bad and the speakers froze and cut in and out so much I couldn't deal with it anymore, which was number 2 nexus 9. Open the new one tonight in the parking lot and boot it. Horrendous lightbleed and volume buttons that were literally ****ing recessed into the frame. I don't know about you, but I'm not a god damn woman so I don't have fingernails to reach a recessed button, and I for damn sure ain't carrying around a ****ing paperclip to adjust the volume on a tablet. So I exchange it. Get nexus 9 #4. Buttons stick out of frame perfectly. Completely different from the one i just had in my hands. But that's not a quality control issue to you. I should have kept the one that had unpressable volume buttons so you won't have to pay more for your next tablet. Too ****ing bad buddy. I'll return EVERY single piece of **** I get, and GLADY pay more for the next version if I don't need a paper clip to adjust the volume, Dramamine for the constant screen flicker, and a speaker that actually plays sound.

And if I sounded pissy in that post, its because on nexus #4 I just noticed the entire upper left hand side of my screen is completely ****ing yellow/brown, it looks like absolute ****. So even this one has bad light bleed when the screen is dark, and when the screen is light, 1/4 of it is piss yellow. This tablet came from the store today, so much for issues being fixed.

I've got the same thing. Plus, the microphone seems to have issues (sensitivity is so low, that it won't hear any "okay google" unless i really scream at it, for instance)! I would return it, but i am too afraid i might get an even worse unit.
Turns out HTC and Google really messed everything up with this one. I guess i was lucky to end up with a yellow-tinted Nexus 9 because, according to all people's reports, that might just be the best hardware version of it! With that in mind, I've never been so unsatisfied about a purchase before. I've always accepted some minor issues as i don't believe there are perfect devices, but i've never heard about so many different and major issues, especially for a tablet of this price. Not even to mention about the software issues, so far. This is just rediculous!

My new Sand model arrived with no issues out of the box ... excellent build quality, no issues with colors in the screen, and no bleeding backlight.

I ordered mine directly off the play store.
I bought mine from Expansys (Europe). It's a pretty late batch (HTC4CC, which I think means December) therefore no back bending, no deep volume buttons and normal lightbleed for an LCD. But the fact that there are still issues and the quality of such an expensive tablet is questionable enough to make you stick with a yellowish screen, is really depressing. Anyway, I am really glad yours is perfect and I hope next batches manage to be as good as this tablet should be, but that doesn't change the fact that HTC and Google really dropped the ball on this one.

Your image is designed to exaggerate a non-problem into a problem.
Dark ambient = long exposure.
Also your picture isn't taken straight on. Its at an angle with the "bad" corner closest to the camera.

OK, so you're telling ME, the one who had the tablet in front of my face it didn't have light bleed and I purposefully 'designed' this picture to exaggerate a problem? Here's the bottom line and I could not give 2 flying ****s what you think I did or didn't do. My tablet had horrible HORRIBLE light bleed. How it looks in that picture is pretty damn close to how it looked in person while in a dark room. Period, end of story. You can check my post history going back to 2010 and see how many times I've complained about devices or *****ed about light bleed. Good luck finding any.

In case you werent aware, most of us here are not ****ing retards and know lcds will have a SMALL amount of light bleed.. This is not a small amount, its an unacceptable amount. So if take a picture of all my older tablets next to the nexus 9, they should all basically look the same then correct? By your logic they should all look similiar(according to you, this is a normal, acceptable amount that should be exhibited by all of my older tablets- including 2 nexus 7's) and the nexus 9 should look no worse than the rest correct? 100$ says they don't. People like you who repeatedly send your hardware back under warranty for imaginary "problems" that are perfectly within the design specifications of the device **AND NOT EVEN CORRECTED** by the warranty replacement, cause the price of hardware to increase for the rest of us, because the cost of that warranty replacement is distributed to EVERYONE who buys that hardware.
I suggest that you return it and buy yourself a ROCK AND A CHISEL. At least if you complain about that, it won't increase the price for the rest of us.

1) I just said in the post you quoted I've NEVER in my life exchanged or returned any devices out of literally dozens. Obviously besides the nexus 9, but since you don't seem to fully read my previous comments in this thread I feel I need to point this out.
2) I haven't warrantied ONE nexus 9. I bought mine from best buy after launch and had until Jan 15 to exchange. So I did. If you actually READ my posts you'll see each one was returned for multiple issues, light bleed being at the back of my list of issues that concern me.
Would you keep a device that had speakers that didn't work? Yes or no? Would you keep a device that had volume buttons LITERALLY recessed inside the frame, making them completely unable to be pressed? Yes or no? Light bleed just happened to be another issue to top these major defects off.
So, since all these problems HAVE been noted in this thread, in fact I'm pretty sure they were in posts you quoted me on, you're telling me non-working speakers and unpressable buttons are both imaginary and within design specs?
Throw horrendous light bleed on top for icing on the cake.
Hey. Just got my new LG G5, but I've noticed something weird. Namely, when I tap the middle of my screen it sounds and feels a bit different, like either the screen was raised there or there was nothing beneath it. I'm wondering if I'm the only one experiencing it.
EDIT: The best test is to repeatedly start tapping it in the middle in quiet surroundings and then move to edges and say if you can hear and feel the difference.
UPDATE: LG's support response is that if the touchscreen works properly there is no basis for RMA.

No screen protector, but maybe it's because of the modular build? It makes sense that it wouldn't sound so hollow near the edges, since the phone has something underneath it there, whereas beneath the middle of the screen there's only a battery, which is removable, so it might not be just built too well. I suppose that I should ask LG themselves about it. Anyway, thanks for your comment.

It makes sense that it wouldn't sound so hollow near the edges, since the phone has something underneath it there, whereas beneath the middle of the screen there's only a battery, which is removable, so it might not be just built too well. Yeah I was thinking that too. I am not noticing this issue. Maybe other's could give feedback for him? My sense of touch not the best lol. LG might be of help. I do notice that on a lot of threads lol. Maybe 3-5 comments and 100+ views.

I have the same problem but the noise is slightly different but not too different unless you're trying hard to hear it. How severe is this problem for you?

You may want to consider the fact that other people viewing this thread have no such issue with their handset and have no input to give? The obvious solution would be to send it back to LG if you are unhappy with it...or..live with it?
It does not appear to be an issue with the actual functioning of the handset though..
My G5 actually makes some strange noise when you shake it. Kind of like something went loose.
But it only happens when one specific battery unit is inserted.
I didn't measure the the thickness but I assume it's related the little difference in thickness of these batteries I have.

That would make sense. They might have left some space there in case the battery is thicker, so that it wouldn't get stuck.

If I'm in quite surroundings I can clearly hear the difference. I don't notice it that much when I'm in a busy place.
The Made by Google Twitter account confirmed the P3 does not come with a notification light! That's insane and takes away one of the great advantages that Android has over iOS. I can't tell you how many times I was unaware of messages and voice mail on my work iPhone because it doesn't give any indication of a missed notification.... For hours and even days!
This is unacceptable!
This really sucks. I have it configured to give me so much information with just a glance. They probably saved $0.01 per phone leaving it off.
They probably think we all want to use AOD to see our notifications! I've never used it myself, why, BECAUSE THE LED LIGHT WORKS GREAT! Good grief!!
Hopefully they moved the "blink" functionality to the AMOLED screen. There is really no need for a separate LED if they move that functionality into the screen. And preferably add the options that lifghtflow offers.
But knowing Google they probably just removed the feature altogether. It's sad that they can't add all of the options that the Nexus 5 had 6 years ago, which launched for half the price. And then they have the nerve to call it a premium device.

If you remember, the Nexus 6 had one but it wasn't implemented by the factory. It took a tear down before it was found and a clever programmer figured out how to make it work!
It doesn't need one with an OLED display. You can display notification indicators on the display like you could with an led.
I am standing in front of the pixel 3 display and can confirm there is no notification led! Not even in the settings!

I don't know, but it's a terrible idea to remove the only way to see missed notifications without turning on the screen.

Can you see the OLED display from a distance, and its colour to tell what type of notification it is? That's the advantage of an LED

I personally will not use the always on feature, so walking the screen will be my only way of seeing missed notifications. Just like the iPhone, Google is forcing you to interact with your phone the way they want, and leaving us without choice.

The usual reviewers aren't helping. Focusing on how pretty the phone is instead of functionality. I'm coming from an S5 which has a multi-color notification LED, SDcard slot, removable battery with durable lightweight removable plastic back, wireless charging, IR transmitter, headphone jack, unlocked bootloader with official lineage support, water resistance, and flat display with no rounded corners. For $1000+ the reviewers and consumers should expect and demand these features plus new stuff. Unfortunately most people don't know or care enough about the hardware or software. Never felt this bitter/unexcited about a $1000 luxury purchase before.
4 GB of ram and 128 GB of storage is not on par with the competition. Not sure why consumers are making excuses for all the shortcomings? I'm buying for stock android, camera, stereo front facing speakers, IP68, wireless charging, and a much faster chip than my current phone. They could easily make it 50% fatter and stuff a massive battery in it with a removable plastic cover with an elastomeric seal but they want us to buy a new one every year or two.
I'm nervously waiting to see if it can be rooted and flashed. If not, there's much better options for the same cost.

Pixel phones purchased direct from Google can all be bootloader unlocked in developer settings. It's easier than just about any other device. Root access will be gained shortly after the phone is released into the wild, and hopefully, Magisk can be used to pass safety net for Google pay. I totally understand your other concerns, but rooting shouldn't be one of them.
No LED totally sucks. I don't use AOD because of increased battery drain and increased burn in. So no way to see if there are notifications without picking up the phone. Weak battery was already bad enough.
I understand it's probably not the biggest deal in the world or anything but for me personally if the notification led is gone, I'm probably going back to Apple.
And this isn't the be-all-end-all reason, Google just seems less and less interested in truly making their devices/software unique and if it's going to essentially be the same thing as an iPhone, then I may as well just have an iPhone.
Kinda OT, but I have to say it's weird that the only other phone i've had that did AOD really good was the OG Moto X. I'll get used it on the P3. I really don't depend on it that much on my P2.... if a notification goes off, I usually hear it or feel the vibration first anyway. Rare are the times I'm spotting a led color "from across the room" lol..
I never have my sound on, drive a truck and use the notification light exclusively for notifications. Forcing me to pick up the phone (as with any professional driver) is ridiculous. Changing colors of the light allowed you to see exactly what or who the notification was from and very private. AOD is distracting and less informative. Makes 0 sense.
I've always used the notification led with my OG Pixel, so now I'm getting used to the aod.
My question for you guys is do you have aod turned on and is there noticeable battery drain from it or any other potential downside? Or do you have it where the aod only turns on from lifting the phone or double tapping?
I'm trying to pick what's the ideal way to go with this. I realize it'll probably be a personal preference deal, I've just never had an aod phone before. Thanks!

I know it can be considered as normal for IPS LCD screens, but many say it's really noticeable and can be annoying. Also, pretty low brightness is reported as under-average.
It seems, according to what I have seen and read, that display is downgrade from Redmi Note 8 Pro, which has pretty good display, no screen bleeding and decent brightness.
So, those who have Note 9 Pro (9S), have you experienced this issues, is it a general thing, or maybe it's just some batch in question.
I really would like to buy a phone, but I wont take a bellow average display as compromise.

Not confirmed from my side,no visible bleed around the camera hole. I was asking myself about this reported claim.
Display is good for me and can easily compete with my old MI9T.
I don't regret buying this phone.
I was hoping to hear that, because I've also saw people commenting that their units are free of any kind of screen issues.
But it seems some batch of phones is impacted by this issue.

Mine is two weeks old and absolutely fine. I have yet to notice light bleed (should I have, or would I need to look for it?) and there's no display retention issues.
I notice the faded color around the screen, im thinking on a return. But dont know if its normal, cause cant notice on some apps even at max brightness. Just got the phone on Sunday
