Display quality concerns? - Redmi Note 9S / Note 9 Pro (Indian Model) Question

So, I have been seeing many reviewers commenting potential display quality issues, mainly screen bleeding all the way around the screen and punch hole.
I know it can be considered as normal for IPS LCD screens, but many say it's really noticeable and can be annoying. Also, pretty low brightness is reported as under-average.
It seems, according to what I have seen and read, that display is downgrade from Redmi Note 8 Pro, which has pretty good display, no screen bleeding and decent brightness.
So, those who have Note 9 Pro (9S), have you experienced this issues, is it a general thing, or maybe it's just some batch in question.
I really would like to buy a phone, but I wont take a bellow average display as compromise.

Not confirmed from my side,no visible bleed around the camera hole. I was asking myself about this reported claim.
Display is good for me and can easily compete with my old MI9T.
I don't regret buying this phone.

I was hoping to hear that, because I've also saw people commenting that their units are free of any kind of screen issues.
But it seems some batch of phones is impacted by this issue.

Mine is perfect. Don't listen to Frankie from Frankie Tech on YouTube. He's full of $hit.

Mine is fine. Nothing noticeable. ??

Mine is two weeks old and absolutely fine. I have yet to notice light bleed (should I have, or would I need to look for it?) and there's no display retention issues.

I notice the faded color around the screen, im thinking on a return. But dont know if its normal, cause cant notice on some apps even at max brightness. Just got the phone on Sunday

Severity of lightbleed

On the seperate one tick whether or not you have it. Personally I can spot mine in normal usage at some auto brightness levels. I know that a lot of this will fall under personal opinion, but I would like to hear what people think.
This thread is pretty pointless. The severity is going to be everyone's opinion. There is no set way to measure it without comparing all the devices. And taking pictures of the device is a bad way to measure it because light bleed is amplified horrendously on a camera. Personally, I don't think the light bleed on my N10 is bad at ALL, possibly because I'm somewhat used to it due to my monitor having it.

Perhaps, but I would like to see how bad people think their light bleed is. Personally I have compared it to several other of my devices (galaxy tab 2 7.0, ipad 2, galaxy player 5.0) and none of them have it this bad.
If I stare at the bottom right corner, on a completely black screen, with max brightness, I can notice slight bleed. Looking at the same corner under any other conditions and I can't make out any bleed lol.

Idk, this makes we want to send mine back and try for another, but I don't want to do that and get a worse one back. I can see mine at 100 percent brightness and if I stare at it I can pretty easily see it under normal conditions. My friend couldn't see it for like 20 minutes though, so maybe I am just crazy. With that said he can spot it pretty easily now.

If it's going to be a concern in the long run, I might suggest just returning it.
Currently, I have a multi-touch issue with my screen that doesn't seem to like when I use more then 3 fingers at random times. Although the chances of me using more then 3 fingers is... extremely rare; it does sort of bother me a bit lol. But then again, aside from that, and the very minor bleed I have, everything else seems fine... hmm

Ha ha, almost seems like a best of the worst sort of thing. If it doesn't have one issue it has another. Also the cable they sent me doesn't charge the tablet, I have to use the one that came with my sgs3.
Good to see that the majority has none. Just ordered a new unit. We shall see how this turns out.
My option is not there. Only visible on the start up screen and only when the auto brightness adjusts. They could probably just fix mine by disabling auto brightness on boot up and there would be no way I can see it. Lol
For the people that said they don't have any:
When did you order and is this your first unit?
I'm not sure if mine really counts as light bleed. Since playing with it for a couple of hours I've only noticed two small spots on the very bottom about the width of my small finger. I need to have brightness set to about 60% and a completely dark background to really see it. During normal use with auto brightness on I don't notice it. Is it really possible to get zero light spots in all conditions with these screens?

That's still light bleed, but I can see mine all the time. It sounds minor.
So far not so good. 14 people don't have light bleed and 15 people do.
I ordered mine 5 minutes after they went on sale. No light bleed.
Well I called for an RMA. Before the csr put it through, I got assurance that should the replacement have worse problems that I could RMA the replacement and keep the original. My problem is a little annoying but I have no desire to go through 6 or more replacements to find that perfect device. Other than the dim strip this thing is flawless so I'd rather not risk warped backs, reboots, or a worse panel. Here's to hoping the one replacement is defect free.

You and me both lol, I really hope my replacement doesn't have worse light bleed.
Before returning your Nexus 10...
Call Google and speak to TECH SUPPORT AND NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
I complained about light bleed in my first one, and later came to find out that the idiot in CS put down that I was returning it due to remorse, which means I'd have to pay the restocking fee. Tech will put your return reason as defective or DOA so you don't get charged the fee.
No light bleed on mine. I was surprised since my last two Android tablets (transformer and toshiba excite 10) both had some light bleed noticeable on the black boot screen.
Hi,
order Thursday 22 and Friday 23 received. I also have the problem of "light leakage" on the bottom right corner.
How is the replacement? Should your return the product for exchange or google you refer another product? and then send the product deffect .

Worth bearing in mind that the numbers are skewed somewhat toward people who are concerned about this topic, with a good chance that they have a light bleed problem -- these are generally the folks who will open this thread and vote in the poll. If you could be confident that all XDA readers in the N10 forum would vote, the percentage would be scarier. Not sure how meaningful the stats will really be that are collected in this thread.

[Q] Nexus 9 screen border issue

Hi all, How are you?
I have a Nexus 9 wifi 32GB "volantis" running stock Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C).
Its display shows a white border/blurry around the device edge on black screens ( or when there is a black area close to the device display edges ), Is this behavior normal?
I appreciate any hlp you can give me,
Roger
Welcome.... Just search for light bleed and you got enough to read ?

Hi mrorange2108,
Thanks a lot for helping.
It looks like that It is indeed backlight bleeding
My screen looks like this one:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-9-tablet/457830-example-light-bleed-nexus-9-a.html
Please, Is there any work around for this issue?
I have read lots of users reports saying that they had requested for a RMA, and They received another Nexus 9 with the same issue.
So, It looks like that It is useless to request a new one, as It will probably have the same problem.
I appreciate any help you can give me,
Roger

It's a flaw in the manufacturing process. Basically a hardware flaw, so you cannot fix it, only HTC can replace the parts or replace the whole device. If it really bothers you I suggest using low brightness, since the bleed will appear worse as you increase it.
Also the problem isn't universal. Mine has little bleed, and others can have even cleaner screens depending on their revision code.

I have searched about screen bleeding issue, and It looks like that all IPS screen have this problem, is that correct?
If it is something related to IPS screens, thus It does not help to request a RMA, as the new device is going to present the same issue , right ?
It looks like that all Nexus 9 are affected with this problem because It relies on IPS screens, some of them with major degree of screen bleeding, and others less affected - but still with bleeding issue.

You will most likely get another N9 with this issue, but maybe you could get lucky and find one with minimal bleeding if you're okay with RMA. The screen in the N9 might have poor quality control just like some models have bad buttons+pushy rear covers+uneven volume rocker.
And I think it's safe to associate bleeding with IPS & (low quality) TN tech just like OLED tends to show the mura effect.
If you don't want to play the game of getting lucky I suggest waiting for the Galaxy Tab S2, next Nexus, or even getting an iPad if you already use their ecosystem.

Hi Ace42, thanks for helping again.
I understood that all IPS screens have bleeding screen issue, right?
Does bleeding screen issue indicates some kind of another future screen issue?
For instance, If my device has bleeding screen issue, Its screen is going to fail after 3 moths of use?
or Other problem might rise if my device has bleeding screen issue?
I appreciate any help you can give,
Roger

No, it doesn't indicate other issues. Light bleeding has been around forever & even TVs + monitors can still experience it to different degrees. I wouldn't worry too much about it because of its commonness. I'm not saying screens can't randomly fall, but if it develops dead zone, yellowing, etc it will not be due to the light bleed.
HTC just has poor QC, it's the job of their employees to evaluate the performance of parts. Despite being an expensive device the quality isn't equal to Apple's.

Contrary to all the crap you will read about "light bleed", it is neither a defect, nor a flaw. It is a CHARACTERISTIC of ALL backlit LCD displays. The reason is has recently become a "defect" in some people's minds, is that there are some display technologies now that do not use a backlight at all, such as the common AMOLED... which has its own set of flaws, such as requiring a much greater resolution in order to yield a similar "look" as a backlit LCD (the higher number of pixels means that you need a stronger GPU), and being extremely poor at accurately reproducing colors.... BUT, no backlight = no light AT ALL from areas that aren't displaying pixels.
Hi all,
thanks a lot for helping.
I understood that black light bleed is a issue in all IPS screens, so if I request a new nexus 9 with HTC's RMA, thus it is going to have the same issue.
Lesion learned: I am going to avoid IPS screens for my next devices.
Thanks a lot,

IPS still a good technology, that's why LG banks on it unlike Sammy. The bleeding can be unnoticeable or severe. That's why quality control is so important.

Mediapad M5 pro panel brightness white background

Does any tablet owner here of M5 or same family tablet, has noticed if one of your display has an edge or sideline that is slightly slightly darker, during using a fully white background?
On my m5 Pro I've noticed that with a fully white backgroud, I do have an edge, close to the left bottom corner (holding the tablet horizontally) that is slightly gray rather than the right side. Off course that: if I'm rotating it, then it Will happear to the top instead.
If you don't stay there and looking at it for a minute, you don't notice it. But if you look at it and compare to the rest of the screen or other side, then you'll see this small difference.
Do you have same issue? Does it is an IPS display issue?
Ah! It makes it only with the White. Only the White. Other colors comparisions are fine.
Looking videos, pictures or anything else that does not push the screen to a very high density white in that side, it's fine.
You can try to see if you're having the same of opening the cleaning chache program, where there is a lot of White all around the screen. There you can watch side by side and every corner... and you can try too see if somewhere do you have a slightly white difference compared to the rest.
But as said above. Only white make this.
Videos, pictures with same colors side to side are fine. It's all about the White.
I've contacted the Huawei assistance trough Phone and they said that is normal and panels might do this, and if in doubt, I'm free to go to the Local official technical assistance in my town to have a confirm for it .
So I've done that! I've moved to the Local technical assistance and the technician told me that it might happens and it is not worthy of a repair, because changing panel might not solve the problem as this slightly slightly brightning difference might show on another side. Has more sense to wait if in these 2 years something going worse and repair it over warranty.
It's hard to see this difference of White brightness, and I've noticed that just because I'm a really fussy guy and ... off course I don't spend my time on surfing on the menus. It's also a post to understand it these kind of IPS panels may encount these issues.
Anyone here is experiencing this thing? Or are you watching all the sides of your tablet to see if do you have it aswell?
It's called uneven brightness, and reading notebookcheck's review said that it is above average. Seems you have received a dud, but it's likely within tolerance im afraid.

Are you sure It's a dud? In a FB group a guy said that he's even worse on his 8.4 because he has it all over the edges . And on a previous M3 he got, there was an even worse side with less brightness. And so He returned the tablet.
In my case, it's so soft that you don't notice it at all. You do have to search for it. And it happens only with the White.
It the technician in the store told me it's not worth a replace the panel, this slightly brightness might happpen and same issue might happen in another side, nobody knows. I wish to beleive him . Why He would had lied to me?
Anyway I've read the m5 review and they are showing the characteristic of the brightness all over the display. Yea, it is seems a trait of it, and a 0,25 cd/m2 is barely perceivable.
What's your opinion?

You need something that can detect the brightness, usually expensive hardware that connects to a windows machine. I think they start at around $500 or so. You could rent one i suppose. (if you could find somewhere or someone!).
But yeah it needs hardware.

What did you decide? I have one side that is darker or M5 10.8, not a pro version.
Should I try to replace it? It does not bother me much and I read here that there are more units, that come with more darker sides/edges.

The problem for me it's just a little and not worth a change for defect.
Because a repairing stores told me that quite always somewhere that little little darker side happear. It's not guarranteed that with a replacement it would not happear elsewhere. It's happening only with the White. Normal use the tablet is fine.
It's an issue of the IPS display, expecially large displays. That's Why i love the AMOLED all the way.
Technician said it's not for a change/repair, exept if it is gonna go worse.
So I'll keep it. Does your problem is so noticeable?

For me it's only the White, but you do have to look for it. It's same issues that have low/mid ranged TVs.

Yes, there was also a problem with other brighter colors. It was noticable only when browsing, but that's mainly what I do with a tablet. After a while I started searching for that darker side in various apps/colors, instead of enjoying a tablet.
Today I got a replacement. The screen looks more or less fine on the sides/edges both with white and other colors.
my m5 pro 10.8 is perfectly in balance.
iv´e tested with a white fullscreen wallpaper on max. brightness. everything is ok.
also other colors are fine.
...
every M5 screen has it. I had 3 pieces, each one had a near the status bar (battery, hour) visible only at a sharp angle. If you do not see it, you look at it badly. I stayed with the first copy. These two still had dead pixels. This is the construction of ips.
yeah i have no issues on mine, full brightness and looking from sharp angles doesn't make much difference at all. Slight brightness changes maybe, but same happens to any screen.

A few questions for new owners...

Hey guys. So I've pre-ordered the Emerald Green version of the phone due to ship on 13 Nov, but I'm still in the process of deciding whether this is the phone for me . It'd be really helpful if those with the phone could take a minute to answer a few questions. Thanks in advance!
1) The GSMArena review just published mentions some minor screen bleed occurring. This is something that LCD screens are more prone to, so I was surprised to hear that it's present on the Mate 20 Pro's OLED panel. Is this something you've noticed and if so how bad is it?
2) I've never used a curved display before and am wondering what the experience is like when watching full screen video (because I watch a lot of video on my phone)? I know the screen in general is considered to be very good, but what about the curved aspect? Is it causing a lot of distortion? Is there distracting glare on the sides of the phone? And what about the unusual aspect ratio - any problems with that?
3) How good would you say the camera is when used simply as a standard point and shoot camera? Is it a camera you need to tinker a lot with or strong under automatic settings?

1) this sort of problem wouldn't be because of the phone itself. Any number of problem can arise with an oled screen on any phone. I don't have any screen bleed at all. They probably just have a slight uneven shift on there unit
2) I'm with you. Never liked curved but I have not noticed any glare. There is a slight colour shift on the edges ..but believe me you don't notice at all in normal use only if you were to stare at the curve intently. The screen is amazing quality .
3) it's early but the camera looks excellent. The wide angle and 5x zoom produces awesome results

BOE screen Inferior. Anyone have a good one?

I know this is not the place to discuss general issues with the phone but I signed up as these forums have the most and best discussions on the issues. I am on my 3rd Mate 20 Pro as the first two LG ones had the screen bleed issue.
Now I have a BOE screen but it looks absolute trash. It lacks brightness and contrast and has a pink tint towards the top and a green tint at the bottom when you view white pages. Also when I watch videos I get awful colour banding etc on gradients. Also I get odd tints etc whenever I look at the phone from almost any angle. I am so so so disappointed.
I'm just curious if anyone has a BOE screen that is as good as the original LG ones (minus screen bleed obviously) as I don't want to send this back if I'm going to get the same crappy screen back. I'm so frustrated and will never buy a Huawei product again.
I have a BOE Seems really great, nice vibrant colours, whites and Blacks are really good. Only issue I have is if you turn off the adaptive brightness the powergenie dims most Google and Facebook apps. But the last few days I have left the adaptive brightness on auto and it seems to not dim as much. I tend to push the brightness up a little bit though.
Something I have noticed, not related to the screen, is I occasionally hear a little click in the sound, I'm not sure what that is. Unless big brother is activating my microphone. ?

I must admit, I do notice the colour issue mostly in Chrome but it doesn't seem to be exclusive to it. Plus the colour banding issue is really bad on mine. For instance, at 1:28 on this video (https:// youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U) the sky has awful banding and also an actual flickering. I guess I have a bad display. I just wonder if they will see it or just send it back. It's definetly there and anyone used to good screens would see it however my aging parents said there was nothing wrong with it so it isn't obvious to anyone not used to an OLED screen and I imagine they could easily say they see no issues. Ahhhh.
No issues with my BOE screen. If you secretly swapped it with a (good) LG I wouldn't notice.

Ooooooh interestingly that is exactly what mine looks like but reversed and guess what... Same build number. Did you get yours replaced with Huawei or a retailer?
Got my BOE 18B23, looks great - you might have a faulty one.
Looks like a faulty BOE screen...I examined mine obsessively within my 2 weeks return period and found no issues. It MIGHT be a bit less bright that LG, but I am comparing it with Youtube videos and Interweb pics, so it's a false call.
Happy so far.
Definitely looks like you have a defective BOE display. I got mine today (18B23) and it's great, at least compared to my old V30 it's much better.

I received a refund after an email to the Carphone Warehouse CEO. As the IMEI I had was from Huawei not CPW. The CPW have been absolutely fantastic to me.
I went yesterday hell bent on a pixel 3xl. But I was drawn toward the Mate 20 Pro. After much discussion with the manager I ended up walking out with a Mate 20 Pro, 18B26 and it absolutely perfect. It's what the phone should have been from the get go. Uniform, responsive, fast fingerprint scanner, sharp and vibrant.

My BOE is perfect. Actually nicer than my Note 9 and Pixel 3. LG was no better.

I have EXACTLY the same problem as you. This is also my 3rd Mate 20 Pro. First was LG, with the green glow issue, that was visible only in dark room with brightness set to minimum and grey background (I am still mad why I returned it, because it was better than BOE) . My second device had a BOE screen with very very bad screen uniformity at low brightness. And now my third Mate has also BOE screen with the same problem as yours. Lower half of the display has a green tint and the upper half has a pink tint. I dont mind if the screen has a tint, because that can be "repaired" by tweaking color temperature. But this is super annoying. When you scroll on sites with white background you can see how it goes from green to pink tint. Otherwise screen is great and therefore I also have a concern about the next device that I might get as a replacement, as this is clearly a lottery now. I am probably going to wait until like a month and then try to get a replacement (I hope they will admit something is wrong with the display) . It is not really affecting the day-to-day usage of the device, it is just my eyes and heart is hurting when looking at the display. Maybe I am just too picky, but I expect from the device which costs 1k€ to be worthy of its price in every department, especially display.

This complete echos my device and my sentiments about the whole thing. For the money this device should not have the issues. It is a fact. This is my first Huawei device and I'm almost certain it will now be my last.
I also don't know which device I would buy, instead of Mate 20 Pro. Once you get used to this IR facial recognition, fingerprint scanner becomes almost useless. It works in every conditions and it's sometimes even too fast. I've been using Mate 9 for the last 2 years and it was super fast from the first to the last day. I got used to the EMUI, gestures are awesome! Oh, and I must not forget about the wide angle lens, it's great. I was thinking about the Note 9, the best display, performance wise also very good (not on pair with Kirin 980 though), camera also very good, fingerprint scanner on the back with facial recognition that is significantly slower and on top of that it's still Samsung, which means that it will get very slow in just a year from buying it (it's also almost 100€ more in my country). Another alternative is OnePlus 6T, display is good, performance it's excellent, software is the best right now, the cameras are on pair with the Note 9, but it lacks wireless charging, IP rating, facial recognition depends only on camera (it doesn't work in the dark) and I can't get it from my carrier. Mate 20 Pro is also the King when it comes to the battery life! So from my point of view, there are no real alternatives to the Mate 20 Pro and I really don't know what to do. Part of me wants to get a replacement ASAP (I am scared of that also), but the other part wants to get something else, because this is going nowhere.
I think a lot of the XDA reports about the LG screens being defective were phony and were made to create mischief and discourage people from buying this phone.
When the gluegate reports started coming in on XDA easily 70% were from XDA accounts that were new and were opened specifically to report supposedly defective screens. How could anybody not have found that suspicious?
The supposed screen bleed issue is a joke. People were comparing the folded OLED on the Mate 20 Pro with Samsung phone screens that don't have folded OLED displays. Obviously the results are going to be different because they are not the same kind of displays. It is 100% normal to have bleed on the edges with a folded OLED display and it is also normal for the edges of the display to look lighter when doing the "uniformity test" that people were told proved the displays were defective.
If you go into the display settings it takes less than 10 seconds to make it appear that your screen has "gone hulk" and take a screenshot.
I have a UK Mate 20 Pro that was preordered before launch. It has an LG display from the initial batch that multiple XDA members claim were 100% defective. The display looks great and is not defective in any way.
A few weeks ago I purchased a 256GB global version and planned to upgrade. But that phone had a BOE display that was very inferior to the LG one so I ended up returning it. The BOE screen had washed out colors and was noticibly less bright than the LG display which is the reason people don't see screen bleed at the edges. Pixel response was also slower than the LG display.
A lot of people who participated in a "screen lottery" and kept returning M20P phones until they got one with a BOE display ultimately found that those displays had inferior color and brightness to the LG display.
I'm pretty certain there was nothing wrong with the phone you returned. Unfortunately I have seen 3 M20P phones with BOE displays and all 3 had washed out colors compared to the LG display.
