Are Exynos devices worth it for custom ROMs? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I wanted to buy a Snapdragon device (OP6) also because I've always had good results for ROM development with this kind of chipsets. I remember that years ago if you bought a Samsung device with a Exynos CPU you were doomed to awful ROMs. I'm talking about AOSP based ROMs of course.
Samsung just release the A50 which I like even more than the OP6 and costs a lot less!
I was wonder if the things are the still the same with the Exynos or nowdays they're basically equal and I can expect good AOSP ROMs for the Samsung as well.
Thanks.

When will we see Exynos 5? Which device will get it?

Hey, just wondering when Samsung will officially release their Exynos 5 to the public and which device do you guy's think will receive it?
Please, no talk of Apple and A-15 etc!!
I think the new Nexus may get the Exynos 5, it's Google's flagship and they are going to want to make a bold statement. I am surprised Note 2 or either of the new tabs released recently didn't get it. Is it ready for public release?

Anyone's guess is as good as yours. I'm guessing either the new Nexus, or Galaxy S4.
It seems just guess work at the moment
It was announced in early August, I am guessing that was just too soon for the Note 2!
Sad as it sounds I am rather excited about the specs of this chipset from Samsung, if it appears in the Nexus then I will most certainly be getting one

November would be my guess. I'm also guessing we'll be seeing more than one Nexus this time.
I doubt that Nexus phone will ever get the exynos chip because it's documentation is semi closed source comparing to TI or Qualqomes one which doesn't meet the main purpose of nexus product - be the base for developers. I'm sure they will use omap 4470 dual in next nexus which performance is pretty same as exynos in S3. Speaking about Exynos 5 it's obvious for me that it will appear in galaxy S4 and Note 3 and tablets than and have a little better performance then A6 chip(Imo).

I guess this is a possibility, Samsung will want to make the S4 as best it can, I still think it could appear before then (guessing around May next year for S4) maybe the rumoured larger Nexus....

Partially agree, new nexus will most likely have omap or snapdragon cpu, but when you said that nexus isnt possible to have exynos, you were kinda wrong, nexus s did feature exynos (old single exynos 3 if you remember )

Not sure it is a mid range phone, I would call a Nokia Lumia 800 a mid range phone and the last Nexus is still better than that
I think with the rumour that multiple Nexus devices might appear means there will be some competition, meaning a better and higher spec device for users offering the pure google experience, which ultimately is what I would like (without rooting and flashing custom rom).
At the end of the day I am just a Technology wh0re, I don't care so much for specs and power more for the technology as a whole :good:

Its more open source friendly than exynos.

Hoping for it debuting in a Tab 7.7 successor in the next few months. Not holding my breath though...
Spotted Samsung's prototype with A-15 CPU (dual core): http://www.sammobile.com/2012/09/19...-powered-by-cortex-a15-cpu-and-mali-t604-gpu/
My bet is this is next Nexus, because its too soon to test SGS4 yet and also it will get quad core CPU IMO (it would be bad marketing if SGS4 get dual core while SGS3 had quad core one year before, most people doesn't know what is A9, A15 etc).
any as long as is not s4
is impossible to let samsung use exynos 5 dual on s4
since now already got quad core cortex a15 (snapdragon s4 pro)

Looking at the odd screen resolution it seems to be having onscreen buttons.. But am sure like you said it's not going to be s4. I would be happy if it's a nexus because samsung might make Exynos more open if nexus is powered by exynos

[Q] How good ports can exynos chipset get?

How good ports can exynos chipset get?
I got alpha as my work phone, not gonna root or anything for awhile but I'm just wondering what can we expect from exynos chipset device romwise?
Last comment about exynos phones that I have heard is that they will never get good support and rely highly on hacks. Also cyanogenmod doesn't officially support any exynos devices?
we will see next months
Seems that there's some progress but like for all exynos chipsets it requires a lot of work. But at least some devs like bigger challenges compared to qualcomm chipset. :fingers-crossed:

Samsung To Discontinue Galaxy Alpha Line

Samsung set to discontinue Galaxy Alpha in favor of cheaper phones
The*Galaxy Alpha*might have been among the best phones Samsung ever produced — it's certainly*the prettiest*— if it weren't for a couple of stumbles: the battery didn't last long enough and its full flagship price forced it to compete against better-rounded rivals. Now, just a few brief months after its introduction, the Alpha is reportedly being supplanted by its successor Galaxy A5, which will take over as the leading Samsung handset for the mid-range market.
ET News*reports that the*Galaxy A5, which launched in China last month, is being brought over to South Korea as part of Samsung's effort to "take the bull by the horns" and*reorganize its slumping smartphone division. The 5-inch A5 is a continuation of the Alpha's design philosophy, emphasizing thinness and higher-quality metal construction, though it opts for a tamer spec sheet that will allow it to be priced at a more competitive 400,000 won (roughly $360). The report states that the A5 will be arriving in Samsung's home country in January or February, while the Galaxy Alpha will be phased out as production ramps down once the current inventory of materials is exhausted.

too sadly, what worry me is updates
Hope they maintain the updates
Just read the article myself and copied the link and went to XDA to make a post about it. You did it before me.
It pisses me off tho. They finally started making a decent specced phone with a quality feel, somewhat at least. I was hoping they'd continue and perfect it with future models. A5 sounds like a device I would never buy. Specs wise I'm reluctant I bought the Alpha to start with. Exynos is just never good. But the phone itself is decent and I have no battery quirks. That prolly has something to do with me being very introverted and I spend like 2 hours a month on calls.
To me, having a decent community for my phone on XDA is also a huge factor. The problem to me with Samsung will always be their Exynos processors. It makes developing for the device so much harder. Now for the Alpha another problem rises, it will be discontinued so it's limited how many people will ever get their hands on one now since dropped prices and supply will go hand in hand and eventually there will be no more phones. I haven't owned a Samsung phone for years simply because they chose their own noob processor and I returned because of build quality. This was a bad decision from Samsung and I feel like they don't really understand. Making more mid-range devices will not make more sales for them. It never has. I work as an IT administrator and we actually use mid-range Samsung devices. People with iPhones and such report "sluggish" behavior. And all I can say is.. Yeah, when you've tried a decent processor it's hard using a handset that uses some old cheap processor for power. It just wont feel as fluent. Even the common end user will notice that a phone runs sluggish.
It's my last Samsung device (for the time being) and I'm somewhat sad cause the S2 and the Galaxy Nexus was my first two decently specced Androids back in the day when they released. I'm sad that Samsung can't get their act together and decide what they want from their phones. Oh well, I'm just ranting.
All in all I hoped for Samsung to continue the fashion with a nicely specced hanset with below 5 inch screen. Guess all we'll get is the A5 or a bigger S5/6 or a Note. I'm just sick of the hype around big handsets. I have my tablet if I want a big screen for something. iPhone has like 2 models atm. - Why can't Samsung just like kick out a ****ty phone, a nice small phone, and then some beefed up S5/6 and a Note for the people that demands a phone on roids. I don't see why you need so many different handsets. All in all it doesn't matter if you choose a S4 Mini or a Core Plus or a Young or a Neo. They are all horrible old devices and they will not be up to standards. Focus on one of them, give em a touch-up.
Sorry, sorry, sorry. Now I'm really worried that this device wont even see half of the dev that happend on the Tab Pro that at least got a CM12 Lollipop release. Sigh.
Merry Christmas guys, and a happy new year.
- @samsung ,you done slipped up again. Make up your mind.
As long as it gets the update to Android 5 I couldn't care less. The Alpha is a beast and I've been very happy with it even coming from an S5. This bad boy has done me just fine, waiting for an S6 with the same quality as the Alpha, Samsung had better deliver or I'll be looking elsewhere to devote my loyalty to.
On the other hand....that is good news....
If sammy stops alpha, it will get a high after-sales value, it will be a rare collectible device,
ofc im happy with it, i do not want my phone to be in everyone's hands
Very sad news , i am very happy with my Alpha and this is Perfect phone.
Just bought it 20 days ago.
Why they want to discontinue
I just ordered the note 4 and it should be here tomorrow. With the new thinner design philosophy the bigger phones don't feel that bad when holding them. The alpha was a nice phone but the lagginess really got to me. I came from the Nexus 5, once you go smooth it's hard to go back to laggy. The note 4's display is just phenomenal to, can't wait to get it. I wish they would have waited a few days to announce this though, now the value on this phone will go down like mad.
I guess it's no surprise since this phone had little impact in the west. I don't think I will ever buy a carrier exclusive phone ever again.
omg i will never buy anything from samsung ever again.I dont know what happening to me first i planned to buy the Z2 then my cousin said Sony is no good buy Samsung, instead I was like okay.Im buying The Alpha even though I never ever like samsung phone but this phone look really good. And now sam**** is doing this to all of us(the alpha's owner) but i hope we still got update from sam**** because in xda there's not alot developer for this phone

How RUMORS of samsung starting to stop manufacturing of galaxy Alpha impacts usability of the phone? It seems, that Alpha will have Lollipop update. :fingers-crossed:
I just don't get all the rage coming from you guys. At least in Latvia it seems to be more popular within youth than SGS5. And it is cheaper on contract (monthly fees) than SGS5 or Z3C.... Developers will do their work, just wait. Coming from Galaxy 3 (i5800) I can say that slow progress at the start leads to better community in future, still love that phone .... And yeah, at the end there were like 4-8 real developers (everything started with one guy who made several custom kernels and later ported CM ROMs to Galaxy 3, others came and gone over the years, but each left their impact on development for the device), some themers and few system optimisers, but progress they made TOGETHER for that phone in terms of speed and functionality was huge.

Samsung has yet too announce anything.
And to people thinking their phone "rare" your not going to magically make huge profit. The phone is not sought after and its definitely not "rare", it has low production to meet low demand.

yeah if the phone is rare its's very popular in the past and now it's discontinued or hard to buy. But this alpha is defferent i mean this phne is good at design and specs but price is abit high i think,no one really use it so it's not rare at all.Over all i love this phone but not Samsung.

This is bad news Lollipop update ok, but what's next? If Alpha will discounted after Lollipop we can flash CM or other custom ROMs, but they will not support heart rate monitor, LTE-A and fingerprint scanner.
Of course, this is a small sacrifice for newest software. But I would not want to lose these functions

Well it's not like Google is going to release something huge as lollipop in 1-2 years so wouldn't expect Samsung to support newer androids than that either.
If you want good android version support, you bought a very wrong device.
Ranking:
Best support = nexus devices. (and google versions)
Second best = flagships, like s5, with qualcomm chipset.
Third = other qualcomm chipset devices
Fourth = flagships with Exynos chipset (example our device)
Fifth = other Exynos chipset devices.

Exynos 5430 is much better than s801 or may be s805 .
i have compared my Alpha with with friend's Xperia z3 , htc m8 , and all i can say is my is faster ,
i have compared loading time of Asphalt 8 , Brother in arms 3 , Gangstar vegas, modern combat 5 and all i can say is its loading faster on mine , s801 is no where nearer .
Also in multitasking , i found my Alpha more responsive , Fluid .
i never liked Nexus devices , used nexus 5 for 10 days , and ditched that Garbage looking and garbage feeling Stock android , and its having Zero functionality compared to our Alpha , if new Nexus 6 is For even 300 $ , still i will not get it :silly:

For example Note II with Exynos was released in 2012 and get Lollipop update in 2015. Samsung complies with the terms of updates (Google says about 18 month of updates). If Alpha will recieve update in spring-2016 - this good, but I'm afraid that because of the discontinue that will not happen.
I do not want something fantastic, do not want the latest software among the first. I just want to support. I want a new smartphone does not forget

Snapdragon VS Exynos

Hey Guys,
Just wondering which CPU you prefer? Im currently based in Hong Kong. I have owned a Note 3 & 4 both which had Exynos processors. Just got a Note 4 last week and to my surprise it came with the Snapdragon. So far seems to run well. Ive heard in general most people say the Snapdragon is better for multimedia / gaming while the Exynos is better for multitasking / running apps etc.
What are everyones thoughts? Would you prefer 1 over the other?
Having used both versions of S7, Exynos any day. Better audio output, better battery life, snappier ui experience.
It's the whole overall feel of the phone which makes me glad that officially I will be getting Exynos note 7 in my region.

I agree on all the above having had both versions of the note 7.
Not to mention the snapdragon versions are bootloader locked and exynos is not. The snapdragon version is a waste of money more or less for many here on xda due to the locked BL.

You'll find mostly through out this forum that Exynos is #1
Thanks for the replies guys! I guess i kind of got the short end of the stick then. As mentioned I have been living in Hong Kong for the past 10 years. Ive had almost every note (Except the 2 & 5) and have always lucked out with the Exynos. For some reason with the release of the note 7 here they decided to sell the Snapdragon version. I have no idea as to why, as normally all past devices from samsung (even the s7) comes with the exynos.
For whatever reason though for the Note 7 both Hong Kong & China apparently got the SD 820. Oh well...Im still happy with it and haven't noticed any issues yet (4th day using it). Batter life seems fine...device runs cool and seems smooth and responsive. That being said my last phone was a Note 4 so this is my first upgrade in about 2 years.

Note20 Hype

Who's already thinking about upgrading their phone, according to the current informations we have about the future Note? And which phone do you want to replace it with?
I'll start: I'm a big fan of the Note series since the first one (I don't use the Spen that much, but I find the overall design and specs to be quite nice, I prefer it over the S series). I usually skip one iteration because I find on one year they add features, and the next year they fix some of the previous year's mistakes. I even had the Note7... not for long So now, even it it still rocks, I'm thinking about replacing my Note9 with a Note20, for the cameras, the display, and all that stuff. Yes I'm totally into the consumer's profile, paying the full bill for a "minor" upgrade, but I enjoy it
What about you guys?
I'm hyped!
Note 10+ here, but I got the upgrade plan or whatever through Samsung with every intention of getting this year's model.
My biggest excitement? 120Hz screen and the new colors. Improved camera as well. I'm hopeful the battery life will remain similar despite the increase in refresh rate.
I'm actually trying to find out reasons to NOT get the Note 20 Ultra and I'm not finding many so far which is a good thing.

Big bump, but the array looks way better than the S20 Ultra.
Oh Im getting it for sure, the new copper color.
Will be keeping my note 10 plus though and still even use my copper note 9 once in awhile lol.
On an S8 and have been putting off a new phone because every time I get hyped I read about what the NEXT one is going to have, most recently skipped the S20 because the 120hz doesn't work on the highest resolution, but I think the Note 20 Ultra will finally be what I drop money on. As long as I don't hear rumors of the S21 folding my laundry...

I really want to get this phone. But I gotta say I'm a little disappointed with the news being reported today that Samsung is sticking with the Exynos 990 (note the rumored Exynos 992) again for international models, while the US, Japan, China, etc get the Snapdragon 865+. There was already about a 20% difference in power between the Exynos 990 and the regular Snapdragon 865 with the S20 models, now that gap will likely be larger.
Don't get me wrong, I think I will still get the Note 20 Ultra as I'm a huge fan of the Note series and I don't think I can wait another year to upgrade from my Note 8. I just wish I wasn't going to get an inferior processor for the same high price as others are paying for the Snapdragon variant.
I'd be interested to hear what others here think about this.

I use a case, so it won't bother me much at all.
I also hope there will be some sort of pre-purchase offer, for example a refund if you send your old device back maybe, like they did for the Note9.

the ONLY reason whoould be that Samsung will again charge us the same money for Exynos chipset eventhough South Korea, China, US and Canada will get Snapdragon 865+ which would be with 30% more powerful and more power efficient.
This means approx. 3hrs SoT more for the Snapdragon 865+ ..
And Samsung it makes it even more difficult if we will buy Snapdragon 865+ note 20 Ultra from US or somewhere else, because in EU they are not supporting warranty for the Snapdragon devices..and they neither do service where customer pays money because they don;t have the spare parts..which is awful..

I feel the same. But I'm also quite conflicted on this for another reason.
Snapdragon phones are locked down, usually they can’t be rooted, and users can’t flash custom recoveries/ROMs.
There are of course exceptions to this but the Exynos variants are definitely better for development purposes.
Now for the first 2 years that probably won't bother me as the stock software would be fine. But once Samsung no longer provides OS updates it's really nice to be able to run custom ROMs.
If only we could get an Exynos device with comparable performance to Snapdragon.

Exynos 992 on 6nm or 5nm with arm x78 architecture is the best soution as of now for Note 20 Utra
If Samsung does a really strong trade in offer (I have a Note 9) to get the price reasonable, and ideally a throw in offer like the new ear buds, I'm in. Multiple Note owner (had the Note 4, 7 and 9) and really looking forward to a camera with a real zoom and better battery life. Looks like a winner!
Note 20 Ultra Colors
Does anyone have a link or list of what the Note 20 Ultra colors will actually be? Thanks in advance.

I read somewhere the 3 colors for the Ultra will be that new copper color, then black and white.
One with Exynos 990 & the other one with SD865+, Samsung will STILL find them to be equally performing..
And a lot will believe it too.
I went from a Note 10+ to a Oppo Find X2 Pro instead of waiting for the Note 20 series, simply for the fact that every leak was pointing to European users being stuck with a Exynos 990 & I don't regret my decision at all, Samsung themselves are so blind they that continue to argue that the Exynos 990 is on the same level as the Snapdragon 865/+, it's ridiculous and from a consumer point of view, unacceptable, we're paying the same premium price but for a worse equipped device.
Many argue that it's only noticeable in benchmarks or on paper etc. But it isn't, it affects camera performance, camera quality, gaming performance, thermal performance, app fluidity, all the important parts of a smartphone experience, Snapdragon is far far ahead.
Sorry for the rant but it's just frustrating, hopefully one day Samsung will listen, in the meantime I'll enjoy my Snapdragon equipped Oppo :good:
