Can't edit files on SD card - Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Questions & Answers

i have a Galaxy Tab s6 with a 256GB SD card. I am storing various types of documents on the SD card such as PDF, ODS, etc. When I open the documents from the SD card, they open as read only. I am able to copy, delete, etc. files to/from the SD card. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can edit files on the SD card? This is driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated.

In developers options there;s a setting to force external sd access for 3rd party apps... tried that?

Microsoft Office programs are read-only unless you have an active Office365 subscription on the tablet

I haven't put an sdcard in yet since I still need to purchase one, but I recall on other Samsung devices I've opened the Samsung MyFiles app and selected the external storage device where it allowed me to change the permissions to full read and write. Hope that is still true for the Tab S6.

As PFC Hudson indicated, MS suite of apps need an active subscription in order to modify files. When I sign out of my subscription, the app instantenous tells me files are read only rregardless it is on SD or local storage.
If you do have a subscription, does the App ask to modify your storage permission from your SD card? Mine does when I first open files on the app, so check on your storage permission for the MS suite.. On the app itself, "This Device" would be available as a storage path when you want to open documents, among your cloud storage drives etc and I can modify (create, save, edit) all of them.
Hope this helps!

For me it's the 4th option from the bottom and I think it translates to: "force allow apps to write on external storage"

Why is that? I have Word and Excel on my Android phone and can edit files and save etc, etc. I installed both the apps on my Tab and copied over the documents from my PC to my external SD card but the files are only ready only. I have emailed MS about it but they have not bothered to reply.

I can't find the option that allows me to edit file in the sd card. Any help?
Thanks

Why? So you'll pay for them of course.
I'm guessing Microsofts assumption is no one is going to be editing documents for work related stuff on their phone, but a tablet they would - So Microsoft will charge for it. It's not actually Tablets, but any device with a screen larger than 10.1" that requires you to pay.

It happens to me also trying to edit with different apps

Writing to Micro Sd Card
I am sure someone in the community knows the answer to this question and I wish they would answer it for Us. I have googled and performed a search on the forum without coming up with anything. I am new to Android and could use the help. Thanks - John
If you're downloading from a browser, this can usually be changed in the browser settings. Eg in Dolphin select settings then data settings. The download location is in there.

Never seen a way to do this.
Most everyone using external SD is to hold files they bring over to tablet not to have files from tablet saved to it. You could use a file explorer - root explorer for example - to manually move files but never yet seen a way to tell camera or browser or Gmail or mail or anything to save files to SD by default. Frankly I was irritated by thus but then I realized 32gb is a hell of a lot of space.
Anyway once unlocked bootloader happens stuff like this - in time - will be changed by devs.

Moving Google translate offline data to external SD

As translate now offers offline translation I want to move that big amount of data to external SD if this is possible. I am on 4.2.2 custom AOKP ROM .
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm looking for a solution to this as well. Using a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 with Android 4.4.2, would like to transfer the offline translation data from internal sd to external sd (want to download all possible languages before travelling, won't fit on internal sd).
Google Translate is automatically creating a folder on my external SD in the same place as on the internal SD, but not putting any files in it. Results from a google search indicated I should just move the data files to that folder, but it's not working. Google Translate still shows them as downloaded (does the same if I just delete them), but if I turn off data and wifi and try to translate something it just comes up blank.
Ideally I'd prefer to avoid rooting my device or using app2sd or link2sd or anything similar. Just looking for a solution for this one app, and maybe a few others. The other apps I'd like to do the same for are google voice keyboard, google text to speech and possibly some GPS software (if I install any). Really just trying to create a micro SD card to use when travelling while keeping the internal memory free for everything else.
If there'd be some way to duplicate this data onto another phone as well, without re-downloading it that'd be even better.
Thanks.
Saving Offline Languages For Google Translate Into External Sd.
The newest version of Google Translate has the capability for offline translates. This is really cool but requires very large files to be downloaded. Here's how to move the file into the external SD card:
1. Go ahead and download all the necessary file onto the device.
2.In your external SD card, create a folder called Android and inside it create a folder called data.
3. In the device storage, look for the file called Android and inside you'll find a folder called data. Go inside that and find the folder com.google.android.apps.translate.
4. Cut (move) the whole folder into the folder you just made called 'data' in the external SD
5.Enjoy - Not now )))
6. Delete folder com.google.android.apps.translate from phone memory.

Very sorry -- but this instruction to "Saving Offline Languages For Google Translate Into External Sd" doesn't work. (Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, rooted)
I deleted - resp. uninstalled the Languages in the App; than copy again the files to extSDcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.translate
than trial to install without WLAN nor 'mobile-data' -- it ask to connect WLAN -- so I switched WLAN on -- but it downloads/installs to the internal SDcard. After using with WLAN it has created again a new "internalSDcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.translate"
It "seems that the Translate-App is configured only to accept the internal SDcard.
Is there maybe a ''config-file' with the path-instructions?

Hi there,
I could be wrong here but, I have the Big brother S4 i9505.
Just tried the instructions above, and it did work.
I think each time you do a download with the app it will save the new downloaded pack to internal storage, then you have to go to the internal storage, cut, and paste new stuff to sdcard each time.
But so far the app itself has not tried to re-download the packs I have moved over to the sdcard to internal storage, just new ones I have chosen since.
I hope that helps

Hi, you says "whole folder" - you mean all with the icon ? I made that that way, does it make any problems speed etc, should I remove anything on internal sd ?
Something funky about folders and or permissions that seems specific to Google Translate, of course with other factors, perhaps something like this:
In order to have the proper permissions maintained as the material is moved the steps in the posted instructions are all important because certain rules of file/folder copying/Moving/creating will be followed by the system (as with PC or network permissions).
In this case it seems that the material must be moved into a folder that was created by the same user that is moving the material so it inherits permissions that make it accessible to that user later in the app.
If there is no such folder on the external SD and the user creates it according to the provided instructions I can see how this works for some people however.
On my phone, and most likely others, that folder already exists having been created the first day I had the phone by ??some app or system function?? as apps got installed and the phone got configured. So, because I don't own the location that the files are being copied to, the files end up with the wrong permissions. Consequently even though they are physically present the app cannot access them.
Since that folder structure may be important to stuff I use I don't really want to fiddle with permissions within it, not that I know how to do so anyhow. Also there is this -
Titanium Back stalls when trying to backup Google Translate.
I would imagine there is some way to work around this or....Google could provide an option to save to external storage (good golly what folly for the failure to provide that).

Yes, that would be the whole folder that is named "com.google.android.apps.translate". That folder will get recreated if Google Translate is re-installed. If you successfully get it onto the external SD you would want to delete it from it's original home or the system would just use it there instead of where it was copied to. If the test fails you would (as was the case for me) want to uninstall Google Translate and delete the "com.google.android.apps" that you copied there before reinstalling Google Translate.

But is there a way to prevent Translate from using external SD?
Each time I insert the SD, Translate stops offline translation. It automatically creates its empty data subtree in /storage/sdcard1/Android on each run if SD card is present. Only card removal restores offline translation.

I've not played with this for some time but am not surprised to hear what you've experienced. Microsoft Translator, which is quite nice, allows ofline language packs to be stored on external SD and used off line for text translations so I switched.

As I explained, Google Translate allows them to be stored in external SD too. But the problem is that GT forces external SD to be used if present. Even if you had downloaded offline files to the internal memory while SD was not present, GT forcibly switches to external SD as you insert it. Since it contains no offline files, GT stops offline translation until you remove the SD.

AFAIK Google has never officially added any functionality to store language packs on external SD, and the effectiveness of workarounds may vary across to Android and ROM versions. This makes it both odd and ironic that you are being forced to use external SD when that is just what others are trying but unable to do.
I'm not sure how to fix your situation but I'm inclined to look toward what it is that is allowing the offline files to be saved and used from an external SD in the first place, which could be due to one of the following:
- New functionality in Google Translate? (unlikely).
- A quirk of the Android version and ROM that you are using perhaps allowing storage on external SD in your case but not others?
- The result of a workaround applied in the past?
- Using Marshmallow with Adoptable Storage (ext SD used as internal).

Nor have I. Although I strongly dislike adaptable storage I had to eliminate it as a factor.
You may not want to take your testing this deep but, I would wonder if the same thing occurs with a different and completely blank SD card which has nothing on it except what you are testing.
You are rooted,
1:Create any folder on your sdcard
2: Copy (Preventing mistakes instead moving), all the downloaded language data to the new folder on sdcard
3:Test the following commands using terminal emulator:
busybox mount -o bind /mnt/yourSdCard/yourNewDir /data/data/com.google.andrhoid.apps.translate/(the_app_languagedataDir).
Open the translator and test.
If does not works, due to sdCard permissions (some data on sdcard is unusable because fat permisions on unix),
You will need create a virtual disk using dd command with the specified size of your language data, on someDir inside the sdcard, format the disk in ext2 fs, mount the disk inside the /data/data/com.google.android.apps.translate/(LanguageDir), and finally, move the language data contente (STRICTLY FOLLOWING THE CONTENT PERMISIONS), and test again.
That is all.

When you say "SD card" do you mean the external SD card? If so, then I'm totally stumped about this one.
[EDIT] One more thing. I could see how, if the app is stored on external SD the data might also be saved to external but the last time I tested (months ago) even with app on external SD language data only saved to internal SD.

No matter where the app itself is stored. getExternalFilesDirs() return a list of all external data storage paths starting from a primary one. If there is an "internal emulated SD", it is the primary storage. In old devices with small internal memory, only external SD card can be a primary external storage.

[Q] More Storage Issues

I still have yet to fix my issue with storage. For some reason I have no Phone storage left, but almost all of my SD card storage is still empty. I thought that pictures and stuff were supposed to be stored on SD card.. or am I wrong??
Well that is not my major issue at the moment. I am actually having a problem with "write-protection"
I plugged my phone into my PC so that I can move my pictures and videos and stuff over to my SD card...
So i put my device USB Connection as a "camera (PTP)"
I found my photos, moved them to the SD card... and I wanted to delete them from the Phone Storage and when I try to delete a folder or file or anything from Phone Storage, it says "can not delete, the storage is write-protected"...
I have heard of it doing this when trying to delete from SD card... but why is m y phone saying that when I am trying to delete form the Phone Storage??
Can someone please help me out with this? I would appreciate it.. Thanks Guys!!

I hope this answers your question...
Many of the phones doesn't default to storing information to the MicroSD because it provides internal memory and not everyone uses a MicroSD.
There are 1 and/or 2 ways to tell the phone/app to store the information to the MicroSD.
1) Not all but, many apps have an option where you can specify where to store the information (Some of the Verbiage used is MicroSD, External Card, Etc...).
.
2) Many but, not all phones have an option in their settings with an option to use an alternate location where to store the information (Some of the Verbiage used is MicroSD, External Card, Etc...).
Also, there is an app called "Link2SD" that i do use to handle where i can specify where to locate some/all the apps i install (External Storage.MicroSD, ext2 partition, etc...).
Link2SD does take a bit of getting used to on how to use it but, the developer (Bulent Akpinar) has a website that provides helpers.
Just keep in mind that most of the phone's capabilities are not automatic and requires you to do the work. :fingers-crossed:

The major issue was not getting things to store onto my SD card... my issue is the fact that I hooked up my phone to my PC using USB connection... and I am moving stuff from my phone memory to my external SD card... then I wanna delete the stuff from my phone memory, that I moved to my SD card... but it wont let me delete anything... it is saying that the disk is write-protected... (the disk being my phone memory not the SD card)
It wont let me delete anything from myt Phone memory...
so i need to know why it is saying that my phone is write protected and how to change it so i can delete from my phone storage

I had a similar issue and the culprit was the file permissions on the PC.
Maybe on your PC, try right clicking the file/folder of what you want to delete (within the Phone via the PC) and in the property selection, edit the ownership to your PC profile or PC Admin (if you have admin rights).
Just a thought...:fingers-crossed:

[External sd card][write acces fix]

This is easy fix or more like workaround for KitKat and Lollipop firmwares when some of your apps can´t write to external sd card. It add one line to "platform.xml" file. This is flashable zip -file via custom recovery. It can also be installed manually by unzipping file, moving it to correct folder and setting permissions to 644 and reboot.
Backup is recommended.
I flashed the first zip and I still get error when trying to play hearthstone while its on my external SD card

Sorry for the late answer. How much do you have free space? Do you have problems with other apps too?
You could try with this app to move game data to external sd card: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount
However I try that game and it install its data just fine to mine external sd card without any help of FolderMount -app. If we really want to know what is wrong we need logcat.

Hmm well I found out that some how a copy of my whole sdcard 0 was made so I was low on space but my external SD cards has like 25gb free I don't get the error on my z2 phone but I did at one point then it just went I think it was after an update of the game my friend had the same error on his s5 so I'm not sure what it could be but I checked to see if the flash was successful and it was since that new line is there now I'll try that app but if nothing I'll provide a logcat and I've copied normal games that are like 100mb I'll try download mortal kombat and see if it occurs with that thanks for the reply
Edit: I tried the foldermount app but it didn't work so I'll try a logcat I'll try reinstalling the app first

My best bet is that even installed on externad sd card this game need much free space from your internal memory (around 1 gb). You can reduce that with FolderMount app (which is little tricky to use) but you need to install the game first before you can do that. So remove (or delete) whatever stuff from internal memory to your external sd card, install the game and it should work just fine.

Good to hear bro.
CM12.1 nightly 20160203 cannot detect 64GB microSD
Hi guys
I just installed Cyanogen OS CM12.1 nightly 20160203 to my Xperia Z2 tablet SGP521 (the one with LTE)
after i thinkering with it for a while, i just realized that there isn't any microSD installed
so i pulled out the card and try to figure out what is wrong
I googled and find some answers but none of them is working for me
I tried to change the filesystem format to FAT32 with 3 different programs (acronis disk director, ease us partition magic, and dos version formater) and none of them is working.
my card is a exFAT file system
I'm very sure that my card is not a fake one (it is a sandisk ultra 64 gb microsdxc class 1)
I can read it from the card reader and it shows all the files inside but i cannot write to it and it not showing in my tablet
Any solutions to this ?

Sorry to hear. You can try to write your sdcard with other card reader but your symptoms indicate that your card might be dying. Known issue with SanDisk cards.

I know this is very old thread but I had to reactivate my old Z2 tablet and I got a few questions and I know you're the expert on this tablet around here. These questions are close to topic so I think ok to reply here I hope. This was my wifes tablet for very short period before she stuck it in a drawer and left it many years ago. I have the rooted .291 MM firmware and I believe that's the latest for this tablet. Anyway, I can't access an sd card or usb stick thru the micro usb host adapter. The internal micro sd card slot works fine so either I've already edited the platform.xml or don't need to for MM I can't remember and I can't even remember where to find the file to check it. My root explorers can see the usb host drive but then show nothing inside. I've tried dozens of cards and sticks and the host cable works fine on my samsung galaxy s7 phone. Is there a setting I'm missing or does the z2 tablet just not able to use host usb. Thanks for any help.

If I understand correctly what you are trying to do, Z2 tablet dosen´t support USB OTG to connect external flash drives or hard drives. How ever if you install program like "USB Media Explorer" or similar from Play Store, it should work. Even for NTFS volumes with "Microsoft NTFS USB Driver by Paragon Sofware". Hope this answer your question.

Thanks kulvertti for replying to this old thread, but no go on the media explorer. So now I've tried about 12 file managers and explorers and most of them with superuser access and most all of them can see the external usb drive, but they can't access it....it just shows basically nothing when opened. Strangest thing ever! 'File Commander' is closest one so far to work, but what it does when I click on the drive is say I need to enable some permissions, which I can't find anywhere, and when I say 'ok' it opens the drive and shows the folders and files in some sort of internal popup window, but then I can't open any of the actual files on the drive shown in that window. So it turns out to be useless as well. I don't think it's an MM problem as my samsung galaxy s7 phone has the same software....android 6.0.1 so exactly same, pretty old I know. I think it must be sony limitation maybe??? Thanks again for the help though.

That's weird. You sure you give apps correct permissions? For me those apps work just fine.
Yes it does seem like a permissions thing but all those apps have permission to storage and that's all I can find to give them anyway, besides root which only several of them request superuser. I think I used to have this problem with some apps back in the day just trying to access internal 2nd microsd card but it was always a permission wasn't activated when installed, but this is something different because these file manager apps can see the external drive but cant see or access any files, it just shows blank. It does seem like its just a setting though. Do I need to add this platform.xml for MM .291, I didn't think I did but maybe?
Just to double check....you can stick a microusb cable with a female regular usb on other end....otg cable I think they're called, into the top slot on tablet and then connect the female end to a usb thumb drive with movies or music and access it thru these file managers and play the content?
Wish I could....It would be much easier and more flexible switching between media content.
Thanks again for your help.

No worries...at least i can use the microsd card slot on the top of the tablet to store and switch up content. I just have a lot of thumb drives and full size sd cards to use so i thought otg was way to go and also the way i used my tablet s, now broken, when traveling. I also didnt want to purchase any microsd cards if i didnt need to. Thanks again though.

Sorry to bother again kulvertti but I made a minor break thru....I discovered that if I go into Settings/Storage I can see all three drives on the Z2 tablet. The main internal drive, the microsd card slot drive, and now I also see the microusb otg cable to usb thumb drive drive.....the missing drive if that makes sense. I can also play the content on each drive with whatever app I choose, including video files off the OTG....directly from the Settings/Storage. So something is very close, but still can't get these various file explorers to work. I have ESfile explorer pro, File Commander, The OTG file manager you recommended, root essentials, root explorer, etc....Plus basically none of my apps can use the otg drive, like utorrent, titanium backup, quikedit, etc....to name a few....they can all see the drive, they just cant access it. It's like a null drive. It shows empty.
Although one other thing about File Commander.....it show the drive, but basically empty, and when I click it a little hint window pops up telling me to 'please choose the root directory of your storage (or external SD card) to grant permissions to operate'......and then there is four little pictures with red circled items and red text explaining what I'm suppose to do, which takes a magnifying glass to read, but then I have none of those items it shows in any of my apps to do that from, not even in the settings do I see those picks anywhere, etc....
It's got to be something simple I think. Somethings just not set correctly. What the hell could it be?
If you can think of anything please do, I appreciate the help. Thanks again.

Sorry for the late reply. It's summer vacation time and I am not beeing at home. But your question. I'm using "X-plore" file explorer and with mentioned apps it's working just fine. I can do what ever I want to with files on usb drive.

LineageOS SD Card

Can anyone with LineageOS explain to me what the deal with the SD card is? I can't seem to do anything with it in the phone. Specifically, I want to download podcasts, but PodcastAddict won't let me download to the sd card when it didn't have any problems with that on CM13. When I go into file manager and try to create the correct path for the podcasts, it tells me that I need root access to get into the sd card folder, which I have already given it in settings. Any ideas?

Nougat is stil in early beta, almost everyone had thuis problem.
Download the ES file manager from google play and grant acces to sdcard, that will fix most of your problems,

Try some third party file manager app. e.g. Asus file manager.
