Hinge update - Microsoft Surface Duo Questions & Answers

I've had the device since the 10'th of September. The hinge is definitely not as smooth as day 1 and I will already taking a warranty replacement. Anyone else having a similar experience?
I have the bumper in place and the device has not been dropped or abused.

I have had no issues with the hinge at this point, feels the same as out of the box.

Ok great to hear. I'm hoping this is a isolated incident. Not sure what could have caused it. It feels at though the gearing is catching. I've handled this thing with velvet gloves.

I do have the same issue the hinge feels as if the gearing is catching when I close and open the hinge very quick. At the day 1 (sep. 10th), the hinge was butter smooth no matter how fast I open or close.
But it is still butter smooth if I do not open or close the hinge so fast, so I don't mind of exchanging it at this point. It might be the normal hinge behavior? Since I am a lot more sensative to those mechanical behavior than most people, it might be normal that only bothers me
I will monitor the behavior of hinge for next month or so to decide whether I am goona keep this or change it for another though. .
Let me know if your new exchanged device does not build the same behavior after a month of usage.

My hinge got worse over time also. Identical to hoyoonbid's experience. Mine actually now makes an audible crinkle noise. I'm just going to return it at this point. I'm not willing to keep this thing for a year if it can't even hold up for a full week.

Had mine for a week now and the hinge is still butter smooth.

OK. Now mine started to make some audible creaky sound from hinge during opening and closing process.
I am gonna exchange it with the new one at least once. I wish that it is device's isolated quality issue. If it happens again with the new one within a month, I might switch over to the galaxy fold 2. I will have to see...

day 1 owner and my hinge feels solid still. usbc port on the other hand, had to renforce it but all good for me so far.

How did you reinforce the USB c cable?

same experience as hoyoonbid. Smooth when closing or opening very slowly. But can feel the catch when trying to open fast.
But it is not becoming worse after that particular point. So i am just going to hold on see how it goes. Just love the device and dont think will ever be able to go back to a normal phone.

Does it rattle?

With all the praise for the solid construction of this device I was surprised to hear mine rattle slightly when setting it down on the sofa.
Try holding your phone in your right hand and tap the top edge at the rear with your right index finger.
Does yours rattle too?
Dont have the device yet, but its not surprising to hear that. Although Samsung has done a wonderful job with utilizing space to the maximum, it is plastic after all.
Its surprising to me. A top end device like this should not rattle!
i'd bet any amount of money its the auto foxus mechanism in the cmaera lense. every phone i've owned does this when i set it down on a hard surface. my n1 which is solid does it as well.
only way to prove it is attempt to take a photo and shake the phone to simulate the rattle. while the camera turns on the auto focus mechanism, it is no longer "loose" and the rattle will briefly go away. once the photo is snapped the focus mechanism goes back to idle/loose position, so it will then rattle.
Only rattle i have is not a rattle just the noise of hitting hard plastic .Same noise on SGS1
jje
I couldn't hear anything on mine aside from the sound of my finger tapping the plastic. Could it be your back cover? It might not be fully on. I carried mine around for a few hours before realising one of the plastic clips wasn't fully in place.

I think you're right. I've done what you suggested with varying success in changing the pattern of the rattle when constantly tapping the phone whilst touching different areas of the viewfinder.
Ok, maybe this is the auto focus mechanism but is it right and if it is why does it affect some and not others?

I get the same with the back cover off. If I apply gentle pressure to the camera lens it does lessen the rattle a little.
I know we don't go round tapping our phones as a rule but I'm not happy at this.
Just checked mine and no rattle here

More than likely (as with nearly all audio / visual imperfections people find) is that some people have better eyes or ears, or a much quieter environment. Try going to downtown Tokyo and even hearing your phone, let alone a rattle. Meanwhile up in the Drakensburg mountains here, I could probably hear a stone dropping at over a kilometer away.
Less likely is that your phone has a looser camera than others - there are always imperfections in manufacturing, and you might have hit the bad end of the spectrum with the lenses being too small for the holder. If this is the case, a replacement would definitely fix it.
But more than likely it's the first case.
I appreciate what you are saying Ryan but in all honestly, I think it my case it's the second scenario.
I don't go looking for faults but I do expect a premium device with a premium price tag to feel like such. This rattle totally spoils it for me and with a few other niggling little doubts I had about the phone (mainly personal preference) this was the push I needed to prompt me to return the handset.
I won't be getting a replacement. Don't get me wrong, the phone is a very nice phone and is probably the best Android out there currently but again, personal preference and a few little niggles means it's not for me.
Great for those that have no rattle, enjoy your devices as I am sure you will.
It was fun while it lasted anyway

Sorry to hear about this 'rattle' on your unit...why not try at least another unit to see if that 'rattle' is also present there, especially if you think you might have gotten a defective unit...
You seem a bit to be quick at dismissing the device. Almost like you just waited to find a reason to get rid of it.
In any case, I hope I don't have that problem on mine.

well to me its normal since i've explicitly noticed the rattle in every phone i've owned, and learned a while back that it was the auto focus mechanism. so it all depends on your personal opinion i guess, but my hunch is that if exchanged every other one would do it as well. who knows though....

No not at all. There are a few things that I don't like about the SGS2 that had me considering returning it before I even noticed the rattle - this is just what cemented my decision to return it. As said previously though, the annoyances I have with it are down to personal preference and comparison to other devices I have owned.
I'm not in the 'business' or picking faults with something for the sake of it, regardless of brand, I just want quality when I pay a quality price and to me at least this rattle makes the whole thing feel cheap.
Remember those two important words, personal and preference!

I guess I see your point.
I was hoping it was a defective unit rather than a general problem with the SGS2 since I hadn't heard about the rattling.
If I noticed something like that on mine, I probably would be bothered too.
yes i agree too. if it's a defective unit, just exchange with another one while it's still under warranty.
just keep that in mind. there are no other devices out there that can match with SGII at this point. What is your second choice, if I may ask?

Good question! I don't have one. It would possibly have been the Nexus S but for the irreversible problems with freezing and lock ups - mainly for the feel / size of the handset rather than its features.
I think I will wait a while now ...

Suggestions - Right side creaking

Well I've just noticed the right side of my tablet has a creak to it. Seems a little loose and am not sure what to do. Am I correct in assuming that the creaking will just get worse in time and potentially come apart completely? Anyone else experiencing this?
Not sure what to do. I've got until Jan. 24th to return it to Best Buy but other than this issue, I love this thing and don't want to get rid of it since the chances of getting a replacement are extremely slim.
I have seen several people comment about the right side seems loose. The bottom right area in the black trim area has a little noise and creak in it when tapped or pressed on mine. My middle left screen area has a little clunk in it when tapped like the glass has a slight gap between in and the screen behind.
I have considered returning mine also because of this but if it is normal, I don't want to since I may get one that is worse. Everything else works fine with mine.
Mine Loose Too
Just got my gray prime 64 yesterday and I did notice the right side of the screen seems loose and protrudes up further than the rest of the display. It almost seems like there might be something too bulky below it preventing it from laying flat.
I have it to, but to the right of the charger slot. It seems like a common issue. You have months worth of repair warranty so if it gets worse you can always send it to ASUS and they'll likely repair it.

Is it really all of them? I've been keeping a list of things to look out for once Amazon finally ships my Prime and I didn't think this is an unavoidable issue (as with GPS). Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
same
I am experiencing the same creaking on the right bezel, about 3/4 of the way up. It was not creaking right out of the box, it started after about 5 days of heavy usage. I am not too worried about it at the moment.
( note: this is my first complaint about my tfp, I love my prime.)
I have slight creaking near the volume rocker. its my only gripe with my device. I rarely if ever hear it, but I know its there and it bugs me.

Does this come with the typical, one year warrenty? How do you even get in contact with them for a repair? This is only getting worse I've noticed and I also have 8 dead pixels. I really want a brand new one but doesn't look like any of my Best Buy's around me are going to get them anytime soon. How do I go about getting them to fix it?
Must be more an issue with the 64s. My two 32 models didn't have this issue.
I've tried out 3 Primes (Champagne 32GB, 2X Gray 32GB), and none have had this issue.

I wish mine wasn't as bad as it is. It's to the point where I won't even hold it with my right hand because I'm afraid it'll break it.
Yes - mine creaks too in a few spots.
But it is not that bad....
Mine is on the top left. Feels like the front panel is loose. I emailed asus about it yesterday hopefully they respond soon.

Loose glass around edges of TF201

I was just wondering if anybody else has an issue with loose glass panel towards the edges of your asus transformer prime? In particular folks who just purchased one. There is about a 1/4" of play mostly at the top/left side of the screen around the volume rocker and to a lesser extent on the right side. It's not a lot, but noticable since that's right where you normally hold it.
I already exchanged it for another one at Office Depot, and this new one has the exact same issue. I can't imagine this would be "normal." Maybe just a defective batch? In either case, I haven't noticed any other issues in the 2 days I had the first one.
They both started with S/N# C30KAS...
C1O from office depot reporting in. Have the exact same issue, right out of the box. My case does make it unnoticeable, though. I'd hate to have to rma it for this.
It is not normal. There are little hatches which hold glass to the frame. If they are broken (they are very thin, I guess they can easily be broken on assembly line) there is no way to fix it apart from taking it apart completely and putting some double sided tape. I would, and did, return it.

Do you realize how much that is? (I assume you mean a quarter inch)
I would just return it.
Yes, it's about a quarter inch. Unfortunately it seems as though these 2 were the last in stock... anywhere. But that's kind of what I thought; just seemed odd to have 2 in a row like that. I guess I'll play with it for a few more days to make sure I still like the TF201 in general and return it later (within the return window). Or maybe if they get a new batch in... exchange it again.
I like to see a picture of this. Quarter inch is really massive.

Yeah, it wasn't good, but it's returned now. Although this 2nd one isn't nearly as bad. In fact, it's only loose on the right side. This is probably closer to an 1/8". So it's doesn't go above the outter bezel.
But I guess the question is whether folks consider any play whatsoever acceptable, normal, or something they even care about. In particular if it's in a case. Not to mention the concern that it might get worse or seperate completely.

On a good unit there is no play. Actually, there is, but it's so small that you have to be looking for it and even then you'd struggle to find it.

Hmm, maybe I'm just being more picky given the much worse amount of seperation I had with the first device. So here is a quick video I just shot with my phone. Not the best quality, but maybe you guys with "good" primes can let me know what ya think.

I'm having the exact same problem, mine also makes an audible "squeek" when pressed, and the compression is definitely visible. The difference though is that mine came back repaired from when I sent it out for RMA, not a replacement. I'll be getting on the phone tonight with them, as the screen is now also starting to display Mura (which it was sent in for the first time I RMA'd it.), and the screen bleed is getting notibly worse to the point where it is very annoying.
mine is also loose in the upper left hand corner area when held in landscape.
On mine there's still lots of areas I can press down but its under 1mm.
I'm more bummed about dust I now see under the screen. Doesn't Apple laminate the lcd to the screen? Wish Asus done it.
i have the same issue. My wife noticed it and I decided that I could live with it.

I see it kinda the same way... I only notice it from time to time in landscape mode. But sometimes I have to test the whole side to find the spot again.
I'm having a really great time with the device, can't think about returning it for for this imperfection.
I've got the same problem albeit the flex is very small.
Well, I decided to at least order a MoKo folio cover case and see if that minor flex is still going to be an issue for me or not. I already don't like the way it feels carrying it around by itself. The edges make it feel somewhat awkward and uncomfortable. So maybe the case is all it needs. Because other than that, I haven't found any other issues, yet.

Check your Lumia 920 for unibody defect

Hi all, I found a defect on my Lumia 920's unibody casing. the top bezel is somewhat loose and it squeaks when the phone is cold and clicks when the phone is warm. I find it very annoying because I like to grab the phone from the top and bottom. here's a video of what I'm talking about:

I already replaced my phone at my Rogers store... you might want to check yours and replace if necessary. I feel the clicking will get ALOT worse in the summer when the weather is hot.

funny you mentioned this, i only just noticed the exact same thing about a week ago....
I had a similar issue with the unibody also.
It make noises when I press between the power and camera button.
I took the phone back to the Nokia Care and after more than a week I went there to have him back but it had the same issue. So I give it back one more time and I'm still waiting....

I have a very slight click near the top of the phone (but not constantly) and that's it. I have the white version. I won't bother changing it because until I read this thread I can't say I even noticed it.
I got a black one on launch and its quiet. No creaks, squeaks or clicks.

I have this effect at right side at the middle and at the top. Won't bother with replacements until it will be getting worse/other defects will appear.
To me it is a minor thing. Also no warranty that new one won't start to click after time.
If you put it in a protector like one should with a 600 dollar phone you won't ever even notice this issue. Plus other than an annoyance it has no affect on the phones function.
mine too
I have a black hong kong version. There's a creak/squeak at the middle left (no button) side. which is little disappointing to me when it's the most expensive phone I bought and build quality was very well reviewed.
Mine does this if I press in the middle of the bottom half of the back. Strange thing is it doesn't always do it, seems a fairly random issue.

I have a red Lumia 920 and I am on my 4th unit because each previous phone has had creaking issues on the body. Now, these haven't been the only issues I have suffered but the others are irrelevant to this thread. It does annoy me. I cringe whenever I picked up the previous phones because of the creaking it would make. It makes the phone feel cheap, and quite frankly it shouldn't and thankfully Nokia agree.
I have had my current phone for a day now and so far no problems have developed so I am hoping for the best.
mine was fine until I dropped it twice in the same day (within about 10 minutes of each other) once on concrete, then for some reason decided to drop it again and it bounced off 3 different objects, since then you can hear a 'click' if I press down on the top of the phone in the centre near the front.
bit miffed as I have a scuffed corner now on an otherwise mint phone, have had it for a good few months tho so the novelty of how shiny and nice it looks has almost worn off
I have the white one, a friend of mine has the black one and has no issues with creaking/clicking on the case, but then he has had a silicon case for it since the day he had it, maybe that's helped?
Well, I have had the phone for 5 days and the squeaking/clicking appeared yesterday. I realized that a part of the body feels "hollow" inside so I proceed to disassembly the unit.
When I take out the cover noticed that in fact there was empty space between the case and the board. I put in some supplement (I had to try with several ones until I found the piece that let me close the phone with no extra effort or excessive pressure). Once I get it right, put the parts toghether again and the squeaking/clicking was gone. Also it doesn't feel hollow like before.
I think is a problem with the material expanding and contracting under different temperatures and because it doesn't have a true anchor to the sides (it goes in and out very easy, no extra seals on the sides). Pretty nasty thing for a High-End device.
PS: My carrier (where I bought the phone) said that it was "normal" and refused to replace the unit. Normal my ass!
Aside from that I'm very much inlove with the 920 and WP8.

I hope your supplement is a material that does not generate static electricity. Otherwise your fix may damage the phone beyond repair. Things like paper, cardboard, plastics like bag material that is not treated, cloth, and many others all generate static when in contact with other non conductors like the inside of the phone body. Just a warning from an RMA tech who has seen ESD damage from bad fixes and the customer stuck with a voided warranty.

Yeah, it was non-conductive material. I sort of a tech guy so I know a little about that. I used something that I commonly use as aislant and vibration cancelling in my PC mods. But thanks very much for the warning anyway. :good:
Following the case, after keep ranting about that flaw with my carrier (and phone vendor) I'm with my second unit now, also yellow. I noticed that the power/lock button is lower that the volume and camera buttons but its not a problem (it is lower compared with the firt unit, if this one was my first surely I was going to think that this was the original design).
I've been looking like a paranoid squizo for other defects but so far, so good.
Pretty lame for a high-end phone and a WP8 flagship. Even if its just a batch. Still,, I freaking love the OS.

Mine does the same, it was one of the first things I noticed. Mine does it when pressing my thumb a bit over the midline, like 40% into the right bezel, measuring from the top right corner and going downwards. The left bezel feels the most solid but the others have creaking spots.
It is not a big deal imo.

since you've mentioned this , im going today to check Sony Electronics here in UAE and test their demo to see if this is a universal issue , its an issue of irritation from its solidity coming from sony this hurts their name. if people accept keeping the condition this way then handling the device will sway from the comfort level of slick solid feel by time.
I don't have that issue with my Xperia Z2 Tablet
I have this issue. Makes a creaking sound when I pinch the tablet on the right side. Did not do this when I first got the tablet but started a couple days ago. Did not seem to affect the water proofing but I only tried running it under a faucet.
Can we warranty this?

I just returned my Z2 tablet and got a reinbursement.
My unit started to have very noticeable rippling artifacts and flashes on the right edge when I was holding the tablet landscape with my right hand. Not always, but far from subtle when it happened, and I do not think I was gripping unreasonably hard. Additionally, holding the tablet from the right edge would sometimes wake up the tablet as if I had double tapped the screen.
It could be my unit but it looked like a weakness in its design so I do not trust the build quality of this model for the long term though I liked everything else about it.
I received my z2 tab today and the right bezel seems fine. No clicking or Halloween feeling to it.

I got a refund. Got my money back and I no longer have a Z2.
I recomend that prospective buyers try it at several stores so they get a feeling of its average build quality and buy at one that allows refunds just in case.
I am disappointed by the build quality and I wish those 50 grams they saved from the first Z were used to reinforce the body instead. The original Z tablet was light enough already.
In all other regards, however, the tablet was the best Android tablet experience you can buy.

im waiting for comtel to give me one since they sent it to sony asia and perhaps this week if not im getting the money back and find another retailer to buy a new one and give u guys feedback for sure
No other owners facing same issue?
ok I just got my new replacement I think this issue is from the production line or somehow its a design flow, this is the 2nd one im feeling and it feels diffrent then my first, the first that I had replaced had the issue from the right side and now this one has the issue from the left side but its diffrent, no more crackling sound under the bezel, but this is just like a loose feel more over then the one from the past, I guess the more tighter they make it the more crackling sound u will feel when handling device. I still didnt test the touch screen and water proof, im going to be using this daily on water and give a later feedback on touch screen and anything else, atleast its less frustrating then my previous one which kept sketching crackling sounds on the right side of the bezel whenever I pick it up with 1 hand from the right.
OK until now was under water for 15min lots of bubbles was coming out of it from the bezel where their was no port it was weird unlike the first one. Its not an iPad the gaps loose feeling from the design is the only problem. The back feels is not enforced proper to the whole build quality. It's like ablowfish, medium pressure presses can make you feel the sway of the build qualities loosness of the chassis /back. &screen
Water goes in the bezel feels heavier after its set under water and I am not sure please verify with your tablet
New update...
Yes water goes in just verified now the crackling sound is back when it used to be a gap of air is now a crackling sounds. The bezel body of this build design is not reinforced perfectly. This is an obvious glitch Sony please wake up.
If u guys want I can demonstrate what I mean and how I knew water goes in from the right side of this tablet.
Once I diped it in my bath tub theirs bubbles lots of little bubbles coming from the upper right edge of the bezel... Meaning air is released....
Their was no sound when I used to carry this tablet with ( one hand) from the (right side edge) on Landscape
But now that first issue still arises..
It's the same issue with the one I had replaced.
Sony is not aware of this issue please help shoutcast to people like Engadget and the review people to reach Sony since Sony support line and emails are dense to react to whom.
i have a same problem on my LTE version SGP521. feels like cheap poorly made device when I hear that cracking sound and I have a feeling that could compromise water tight seal. I talked to sony support and they gave me retarded respond saying give it a time. WTF Sony???
I'm gonna start calling them up until I get replacement I'm not waiting this will not get fixed itself magically.
Myne is same model tablet , the sgp is Singapore base and this issue is the same issue that z2 phone owners are experiencing in Singapore.
if u Google gap screen z2 Singapore, the results will show z2 phone owners 2months ago complaining about the gaps and water resistant.
Sony did not fix Singapore past problem with the z2 phone owners, if this issue is just Singapore I hope so then I'm returning my tablet and ordering one from UK or USA.
