Question Terrible finger print sensitivity with screen protector - Google Pixel 6

Hi all,
Anyone having much luck with the finger print reader? Setting it up works like a charm but actually unlocking the devices 9 out of 10 times! End up having to enter the PIN instead. Just keeps saying that it's not recognised. I've tried a few fingers but really it would only be my thumbs that use it, even deleted them all and started again. I do have a Spigen screen protector on but I have that on when setting them up in the first place which like I said works OK.
Thanks

I've seen it recommended on other devices to add the same fingerprint several times (instead of fingers 1 + 2 + 3 just add the same finger/thumb for both), might be worth a try here too?

I didn't find it too bad to start with. If anything better than my P30 Pro which also has an under screen sensor. Since putting a screen protector on (also Spigen glass) its become unusable at you describe

Urgh, that's not a good sign. It was strange that setting it work OK

There's also a screen sensitivity setting to increase sensitivity when using a screen protector (can't remember where I found that) sadly it didn't improve things. I'll try the multiple same finger enrollment and let you know if that improves thinks for me

Right, I've turned that sensitivity thing on and added the same thumb 4 times (you can only add 5 fingers) and whilst it's not perfect it does seem better, probably works 3 out of 5 tries now.

It seemed to improve things for me ONCE. Then back to really not working at all. Grrr

It's even worse when trying to use your finger to unlock apps like WhatsApp.
I'm close to pulling it off

I changed the thread title as I took the screen protector off and it works perfectly. Contacted Spigen so hopefully they'll come back to me

I think the FPS is not great even without a screen protector. I am very disappoined, it all feels very 2018.
Hoping (but not confident) it can improve with software updates.

It's a known problem that screen protectors make life with an optical fingerprint scanner troublesome. There is a reason why many of us Pixel fans were stoked and happy that Google went with a decent 3D Facescan like Apple on the P4, a system that just works and one that is actually reliable. It never shut down on me, even though I had to clear the topside portion probably ~10 times in 2 years because it had trouble scanning me (because of dirt on the screen). Only "real" problem are... masks of course. Faceunlock and masks don't go well. That is why...
Imagine the Pixel 6 with face unlock AND a back-side fingerprint scanner.
That would be my dream.
It will probably remain a dream.

I've got the same problem, but my right thumb works perfectly every time. My left thumb just refuses to unlock the phone.
Guess right thumb it is...
Edit: Actually, mine seems to have settled down and now works with both thumbs equally well.

Mine will be coming in soon (Nov.10). I was wondering if anyone here has used the Oneplus 6T. I used to have that phone and for me the fp scanner was pretty reliable and quick enough, even with screen protectors. Only time there were issues was before rom developers had came up with better way of implementing it n custom roms, but after the new implementation it became faster than stock was on that phone. I also remember changing the color of the light had an effect on how well it read my finger. Green light was best, white was second best and the blue light was last in my usage.

I have the 6T and am getting my pixel 6 tomorrow (10/28). I'm curious to see the difference. I remember those initial issues in custom rom development.

Add your fingerprint twice. Pretty sure I read that resolved issues elsewhere as with previous Android phones.

I have the same build number and it does not work with screen protectors (at least the one I had). It only reads partial prints and then I have to use the pin.

Yes, they come with a screen protector preinstalled No need to take it of.
Should that scratch easily? I have had the phone less than a day and all I did was pull it out of my pocket and I have a couple scratches now. They don't seem to be coming off. Don't know why but it although it looks like its a protector it doesn't feel like one. I wonder if anyone has actually removed it?

I removed the pre installed protector on my x10 and Arc, I think it's the same thing. I just applied a new protetor directly on the glass.
I found the pre-installed protector made the screen feel very 'sticky' to touch and also attracted dust, dog hair etc like a magnet! Much better without it
I don't think my phone has a screenprotector.

Everyone phone sold in the Netherlands has one installed confirmed by Sony NL
Bought an Xperia S in Italy yesterday, and yes, there is one screen protector in the box, one on the display glass and one (with printed demo graphics on it, so it have to be removed) on top of the one installed on the display...
Great !
I saw it just in time, my girfriend was already managing how to stick the protector found in the box
Has anyone else noticed that the softkeys are not very responsive? If so does removing the screen protector help?
I'm starting to think that the screen protector is the cause..
I took mine off. I hate them, and yes, my home button is more responsive.

In the end I decided to remove the screen protector, the softkeys work every time now!
I don't see why I should slide my finger up from the transparent strip when there are keys made to be pressed..
I might put on the other screen protector that was in the box, cutting the bottom part so it doesn't cover the softkeys
Mm.. How did you all remove it safely? I am honestly a little bit afraid... Where I should start to pick it off?
I never have to remove one by myself before...

Start at any of the corners and use your nails, or the plastic bubble remover from the other screen protector, it takes a while as it's really stuck on well!
I quite like the fact that the soft keys are a bit unresponsive, saves me accidentally hitting the home key when sliding up the notification panel!

Screen protector
I sent an e-mail to the Sony helpdesk to ask whether this is a screen protector or not.
This is the answer i got from them:
"With regards to your enquiry, I inform you that the Xperia S has a preinstalled protective layer that should not be removed."
See here as well:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/message/175211
comment from xperia support staff:
The phone comes with a shatter proof sheet attached on scratch-resistant glass.
So, the screen protector that comes pre-attached is meant to keep the display from shattering if e.g. dropped. It also protects against other damages to a small extent. This sheet is however not scratch-resistant (the display is though).
You can remove this protection if you want to but I suggest you keep it on. If you remove it you should attach a new one to keep the display protected.
I should also point out that "scratch-resistant" is not the same as "scratch-proof". If you put all your body weight on a sharp object and swipe it over the screen, you will most likely get a scratch so you should still be careful.
I keep my phone in my front jeans pocket with nothing else but the phone in it. Keys, coins etc will damage the phone sooner or later.

Mean I should remove it and replace with another screen protector
Now i applied a screen protector on the other screen protector

Proximity Sensor - A software issue?

My proximity sensor seems to be working maybe 30 percent of the time, it was mentioned that doing a full reset of the device fixed the problem for someone else. I am curious if anyone else having issues or just want to test their own could do these steps:
Troubleshoot:
On your phone open the dialer, like you are going to dial the phone number of a friend. Instead dial *#*#3424#*#* (*#*#DIAG#*#*). It will take you to the HTC Function test application. On the white screen, press accept and look for a "P-Sensor" test. Press the item and hit run and it will take you through a test of the sensor. This will help you further determine if there is an issue or not.
Edit: not using a screen protector and screen is clean.
Mines just fine, no screen protector.
Edit: I can have my hand about 3 inches away before it stops.
Just tried to do a factory reset on mine, guess im going to have to return it..however the hell I'm supposed to do that I have no idea...

Mine's like this too but I may just keep it.
I seem to have issues with past phones proximity sensors... being too close meant the screen would come on and i'd push buttons/mute/hang up on the other person all of the time. I'd have to intentionally hold the phone a little ways from my ear so the screen stays off.
And that's just stupid. I don't mind having to hit the power button to hang up the call. I'd say mine only works 1/25 times. Usually the screen just stays dark constantly.
No screen protector, clean screen.
Mine's same way, if I'm on a call the phone looks dead. I have to hit power to get it on to end the call or interact with it.
I have a replacement coming from telesales, hope it fixes it. Is there anyone who has one that works perfect? lol

Did they give you a timetable on when it would be shipped? I tried calling today regarding my borked Google Wallet and they authorized a new device but the order support department is closed and they are suppose to call me back tomorrow.
In playing with the diagnostic mode I don't believe these phones even have a proximity sensor. I think its relying 100% on the light sensor. try it... the phone screen won't turn on automatically when its not very bright out.
I only see one hole in the face of the phone and I assume that's the light sensor.

i thought that was by design... the proximity sensor IS the light sensor, that controls auto-brightness, and if its doing like a call, if light is dark, it goes off. (saves money, real estate, and battery, only one sensor instead of 2)
That was also why if you press it up to your face too fast, screen stays on and buttons press. if you smash it on your face, the screen light reflects off your face enough to trigger the sensor to think its still 'bright' out. you have to semi-deliberately, (means:slower-ly) raise the phone to your ear so there's the second of darkness before the screen light starts bouncing off your face strong enough to trigger it.
p.s. - this is also more of a wpp
Mine turns off and on based upon how much natural light it sees. In a well lit room without sunlight, it does not turn off. In sunlight, you can turn it off and on by moving it away from the sunlight.
If you have the phone in a call, I can see a small red light next to the proximity sensor. If not in a call, the light is not turned on.
I am not please with how this works. I can't see the dial pad without pressing the power button inside.
I'm hoping that this is something that can be fixed without replacing the hardware.

That's funny if it's true. Ha ha. So if you bring the handset up to your ear at a typical rate (like most everyone does), the sensor wont turn the screen off? Brilliant.
So I guess lighter skinned people have this issue more than dark skinned people? Great design.
I am having major issues with this now. It has steadily got worse each day. I see the little red light come on right next to the sensor when I make a phone call and it messes up. It will not go away unless I restart or shutdown the phone, and as soon as I make another phone call the red light is back on. I don't know what the issue is but it's getting annoying. I have the HD screen protector but it seems to be placed right and not blocking the sensor so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
I would love to know if it is a software issue and if it can be fixed.

And? If that's the proximity sensor, please tell me where the light sensor is.
I just noticed the small red light when in a call - but it doesn't seem to make a difference. My phone only turns the screen on when exposed to pretty much direct sunlight.
In my apartment or pretty much any place indoors without overhead lighting the screen just stays off during calls.
I'll have to watch the light now too though. Looks like it doesn't always turn off when ending a call.
Does anybody thats having the proximity issue also have the glass slightly raised on the same corner as the sensor? I think this is directly related, mine is slightly raised and if I push it down flush my proximity works perfectly. Somebody else please try and mayb it is a hardware issue afterall.

Yes but good call.
Mine is only BARELY lifted in that corner. If I push down hard, the sensor functions as normal.
Just like my E3D I'll probably keep this flaw in my back pocket per se till I feel like getting the phone replaced for a scratch or something.
Im gonna wait a couple weeks and get it replaced, its too annoying lol

This phone seems to have many problems..

I just ordered the P9000, and ive been search around for several websites and see that the sound is horrible, camera app needs improvement, gps takes very long to detect and fingerprint works when it wants to.. Does it malfunction very easily? Ive also read that the HW stops working very fast in just a matter of months is this true? I hope its still worth it.. Also, sound seems that it can be improved with custom roms, does it also improve fingerprint scanner and camera?

Most of this is limitations with the HW/chipset afaik. But I haven't tried any custom roms.
I'd say it's a cheap phone that offers solid value. I actually like the P9000 a lot, but my expectations were never high. It does the job for me.

alright thanks, i bought this phone but theres just one more thing i would like to know? when receiving a call is the sound loud?
No, the sound while calling is pretty good and not to loud.
Three fingerprint scanner is working good if you use a case (so your finger is in the middle of the scanner) and you scan your finger multiple times while setting it up.
The only big downside is navigation. Is you use Google Maps the GPS is causing you to warp from street to street. Often some back alley due to bad GPS reception.

I just had it in my pocket while sitting down. It feels like having an iPhone 6, but way worse. So I will replace the phone soon.
Which Display Typ is in your Phone ? The original LCM 13752A or a TDOBD0546 - Version
*#*#33#*#* - Single Test - RF Calibration - LCM ??
kaisims - Re your bent phone, why do you keep it in a pocket where this is GOING to happen or at least stress it beyond reasonable tolerance when sat on? Trouser and jacket pockets pockets are notorious for damaging phones and/or dropping them onto the floor. I would not blame the phone too much
I have never had any of the problems with my P9000 (factory with factory updates) that you have experienced, so far for me, it is a great phone.
Elephone P9000 and Elephone P8000 are great phones, I am using both of them.
No any issues so far.

Question Is there a tempered glass screen protector that works with the finger print scanner?

Anyone have any luck with getting a tempered glass screen protector that works with the fingerprint scanner?
I have read several threads about this. Some suggest adding same finger twice. Some suggest increasing sensitivity of the screen, and others suggest making sure you are up to date. None of this has worked for me. It is double disappointing for me as I have large thumbs and never could seem to get a thumb unlock to work until the 6. Once I added the screen protector, the phone can not recognize the finger print, even though I added it several times.
I purchased this one https://www.amazon.com/Milomdoi-Goo...9Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
It claims to work with finger print scanner. I followed their instructions, but no luck so far.
I have noticed that some manufacturers are adding "does not support finger print scanner" to their listings now.
This one claims to work with finger print scanner, but it is not tempered glass: https://www.amazon.com/ArmorSuit-Mi...J,B09FF4R924,B095MDT35P&srpt=SCREEN_PROTECTOR
I have the SuperShieldz TmGlss, added thumb once, index finger 3 times. turned up sensitivity. Thumb rarely works, finger works as well as my outgoing Sammy S9, which is acceptable.

I don't see the Pixel 6/6 Pro device selection on Zagg's website. Where did you get your screen protector?
Here is what I ordered:
Glass Elite
Advanced Impact Protection with Anti-microbial Treatment that Protects the Screen Protector
www.zagg.com
This is what I bought. Works perfectly fine with the fingerprint scanner.
https://www.amazon.com/Compatible-Google-Pixel-Protector-Installation/dp/B095YTTR3Y/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=L%CF%9FK+5+Pack+Screen+Protector+for+Google+Pixel+6&qid=1635762195&sr=8-3
Edit: Aaaaand out of stock. Lol
They upped their price now because of XDA/reddit lol.
I ordered it. Will report back if it works with FP scanner.
I always put Brotect screen protectors on my devices so I'm confident that one will work with the fp scanner no problem.
I used it on 6T which had a notoriously bad sensor and I'm still using it to this day without issue.
Brotect "airglass". Mine will arrive in a day or two so I'll update here after I've applied it.

I just ordered the privacy version of this screen protector and can tell you that the fingerprint doesn't read. I'm not sure if it the screen protector itself or the tinted privacy aspect of it.

wow, just got mine dropped off at my front porch. 12.99 to 16.99. and it was temporarily out of stock and now ships in two to three weeks.
edit: just replaced my previous one with this. Quite a bit better (but only paid $6 for three of the other one - no complaints). The camera hole is not too small as previous one and it covers just a tiny bit more of the sides of the screen and definitely more of the top and bottom. Works better with gestures.
Oleophobic coating is better than the cheaper ones I used. Feels great. A lot less smudging and fingerprints on this one.
Fingerprint works the same still. Guess it's the same thickness as the one I just trained.
Overall I can recommend this one.
The one I don't recommend is called
apiker 3 Pack
One funny part is that label when I unpacked the LϟK one.

edited post above. Yes. It works without retraining and I must assume it's the same thickness as the cheaper one I used before. I have no problems with the FP scanner, but I understand that it is very finicky, have been there with a number of other phones myself - e.g. S21 Ultra or OP 8 Pro
Received my Zagg screen protector before any of the others. Installed. Finger print scanner works fine with Zagg screen protector and my Pixel 6.
Not excited about the Zagg case as it does not have much of a lip, but one battle at a time!
I purchased and installed the OMOTON screen protector (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B096M9HVX1) on two Pixel 6 devices. The fingerprint readers on both devices are working just as well as when used bare.

It's not tempered glass but works just fine with my fingerprint scanner. It comes with two protectors and I was able to install first time with no bubbles or imperfections.
I use my thumb and haven't had any issues.

That's a link to the Armorsuit for the 6 Pro and I'm not seeing it available in TPU for the P6 (at least in the USA); do you have a different link? That would totally be what I would buy (short of glass if one worked with the fingerprint), but doesn't seem to exist...
If you do have a link, pls provide. Thanks!

Question Double Tap To Wake Inconsistent, Anyone else?

Anyone have a fix for this? It works about 5 times out of 10, very frustrating.
Is power management active? Just a guess.
It seems to be a common Sony problem.
Maybe it's just technique, see link.
I'd kill if I didn't have 2X tap on/off... it's so useful.
I also use the the Double Tap app on my N10+'s.
May not work on 11 and 12.

works here just fine. Would not say 100% but it has more to do with my inconsistent tapping than with the device. Was the same on XZ2.
Thank you for this.

Tried the app, my phone will not allow me to access the accessibility service permissions to make it work. Thanks for trying.

It needs permission in Setting>Accessibility>Installed Services.
See if the option is there. Gookill has made a mess of Android.
I would like to use it but there is issue eith it. Often it gets double tapped in my pocket and random things is touched sometimes im calling to someone from my pocket. By the way block random touch in pocket feature is turned on.

Not sure with Sony, Samsung's have a couple features to mitigate this.
Place with display facing away from your skin.
Place in pocket by the sides not the display.
Use a case with slightly raised guards on the sides.
non of that will help. I can confirm this. Also, the same was happening on my XZ2. I would fine the phone warm just to realize that it did who knows what.
What helped in my case was pattern lock. But that greatly ruined my experience because I usually don't use any locks on my devices. On mark IV i can't get my music player to be always present on lock screen, only if it is playing, which was the main reason why I used that, turned that off. AOD as such is ggod enough option for me.

The display will not activate unless touched, it's that simple. Dry cloth has no effect.
but many other things that get in contact through the cloth have. Zippers, keys, hands, wet cloths, poles in public transport........Yeah. it should not be happening but it did happened waaaaaay to many times to be just a coincidence.

You need to sort it out. This isn't rocket science.
Water should never come in contact with the phone even if ip68 rated.I keep the N10+ in my bdu pant thigh cargo pocket by itself facing outward. Sometimes vest pocket.
It also is in a Zizo Bolt case. I have little accidental turn ons.
Been using it like this for 3 years.
Samsung's have a system app that help block accidental touches if it senses random hits it requires a swipe to turn on the display. There may be a similar app on Playstore.
so does have a SONY. And it is not something that happens 37x per day but it happened enough times on XZ2 and a few times on 1 IV to make me realize that it can happen.
yup. turned off accidental touch in pocket setting to see if it helps

Happens occasionally to me but it's always my fault when or how I place it in my pocket. In 3 years of heavy usage the accidental turn on's never caused any system or app damage. Cargo pockets are ideal, I use bdu's with button closure; the rearward one buttoned, the forward one unbuttoned. It never falls out even when running.
Easy to access and a relatively safe storage area.
A well designed case helps a lot with this issue especially with curved displays. They case should have side guards slightly higher than the display, end guards even higher. Helps prevent damage in face plant drops too.
Double tap works fine for me I've had my phone for a week now.
