WM6 Vibrating Alert on Athena - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo ROM Development

Hi All,
All the specs for the Athena state that vibrating alert is supported. However, I can find no way of switching this on. The Universal has a vibrating option in the volume control, but not the Athena. Are the specs wrong?

I don't think that there is vibrate functionality on the Athena. The specs I've seen don't have this as a feature. Maybe the site you're reading it from has it wrong?

First - please post in the correct place (Athena\Athena for this one) - this thread is for WM6 issues
As to vibrating, sonme sites just got this wrong. The Athena has a spinning hard drive in it - vibration would not be good!

Not to mention the bloody tablet side would probably fall down if it were shook that much!

That is incorrect! The Athena has a USB flash drive in it and NOT a mechanical (i.e. "spinning") hard drive.
The Athena does not have the vibrating alert feature.
Hope this helps.........Later

Wrong yet again!!!!
The Athena has a real mechanical/spinning HD in it.
Its an 8GB Microdrive from Hitachi. IT IS NOT A SOLID STATE DEVICE...
It uses a PATA ZIF connector (Same interface Protocol as an older desktop HD, but different connector) not USB...

You got there before I could. There is a suggesiton that some later models have / will abandone the spinning microdive for solid state memory.
BTW if you play music from the MD but turn the volume off, you can even hear it spinning if you put the unit to your ear

NEW Seidio Blue Angel mount with MP3 playback

Seidio is listing on their site a carkit for the Blue Angel :
This kit will serve as a hands-free speakerphone and doubles as a MP3/GPS playback through your car stereo speakers.

Built-in audio jack in the holder means no additional audio cables needed

http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CK8AG21MXDA3
There is also a model with integrated speaker, but I prefer hearing my mp3s through the car audio system using an fm transmitter.
Is this the holy grail some people have been looking for ???
There is one BUT :
Switch available on the cradle to allow you to easily select either "hands free" mode or "MP3/GPS" mode
Click to collapse
Does this mean you have to choose ? I thought that the home-brew circuits that some people build here supported both ?
They also have a ground loop isolator : http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GLI-25M35M
I suppose this can come in handy when the fm transmitter is powered from a cigarette lighter adapter.
When I'm looking at all of this, I get the impression that there is finally a manufacturer who understands what a _real_ carkit for the Blue Angel is supposed to look like. Does anyone share this thrill ?
I'm mailing seidio about the function of that handsfree/mp3 switch. If I get a satisfactory answer, I might want to rethink the Parrot bluetooth solution.
Cheers,
Kristof
I got the answer from Seidio:
No, it is a misprint, It does not need the switch. We will correct the web site on Monday.

So... this should WORK !!!!
Hmmm, with this solution, you can't have an incoming call that interrupts your regular car cd player. For this you would need an fm-transmitter with RDS TP support...
Does anyone knows such a product ?
This device features an auto-mute upon incoming audio signal and connects the pda mount directly to the car audio instead of fm, maybe an even 'cleaner' solution :
http://www.qubit.dk/products.html
Look for pda sound system.
Has anyone received one of these car kits? Are they as great as the sound? Seidio says they are on Backorder. "Due to high demand" Figured that some out there should have one then.

Itech Clip Radio problem

Has anyone used the Itech Clip Radio with a Hermes before? I think I read on here that someone was able to use it but I'm having trouble pairing it to the phone.
The headset is a bit hard to turn on as it takes a few presses of the function button before it turns on. After it's on and blinking 1 blue/ 1red LED (not alternating between blue and red) I try to find the device on my Jasjam but it can't find anything.
I also tried to discover the headset with an Atom Exec, Nokia N80 and Nokia NGage and they all couldn't find it.
Any idea what I should do?
Thanks
It's ok now. I didn't press long enough to get the pairing working before. Works fine now but have yet to try out the other functions.
Test
Hi Jag,
I have in mind to get the itech radio clip too. Would you post a little review of what you think about it and how it works with the hermes?
Thanks
Nav
Don't do it, it can produce very poor quality sound with the Hermes. Go for the Nokia or Sony.
The S38 works great for me. I wouldn't exactly describe myself as an audiophile, but I have spent alot of time listening with mine. The only trick is if it plays for a second and turns off, you need to lock the screen (push power button) and turn it back on. works great after that.
I listen to Sirius over the internet though. I have no interest in terrestrial radio So I guess if you are asking about the radio reception, you should ignore my opinion.
I have iTech Clip Radio too. I am fine with the quality.
But I found some times the device will drop sound and the device seems still connected to Hermes. The BlueTooth status is X "Not active".
I need to reboot Hermes in order to resume it.
Do you have similar situation? Or, do you have any solution?
Thanks!!!
The lastest version of WM6 Black, 3 has updated Bluetooth drivers which significantly improves both performance and sound quality. give it a shot if you have troubles.

Recommendations for Automount that are GPS Ready

Anyone have any recommendations for an automount that is GPS Ready...you know, the cradle can power a GPS unit (Garmin GPS 10)??? I have been looking but drawing blanks on units specific to the Hermes...any help is greatly appreciated...
I recently picked up this mount and it rocks. Only one I've seen that will power a BT GPS unit. Looks like it will power the Garmin 10x, although I use an i.Blue 737 with it.
That's very cool and almost exactly what I need..
would you mind telling me:
How good is the speaker, I find the built in one just a bit quiet for tomtom..
Can it be toggled on/off for voice calls?
What is the vent clip like? I'm not a fan of windscreen mount..

The powered speaker is great and is automatically activated when you cradle the device. Actually, the mount turns your phone into a completely hands-free speakerphone. There's a 2.5mm headset jack on the mount and cable with built-in hands-free mic that plugs in between the headset jack and the powered speaker. Or you can just use a BT headset and bypass all of that.
There isn't and on/off toggle for the speaker, although my navigation software (Odyssey 4.0) shuts up whenever I'm on a call. I think this must be a feature of the software rather than the hardware, although I'm not entirely sure.
There is an on/off toggle for charging your phone while cradled, although the mount must always be plugged in order to use the powered speaker. There's a separate modular port (always on, not toggled by the aforementioned on/off switch) and pigtail cable included that can be used to charge your BT GPS unit. My only complaint is that the speaker picks up some interference from the phone and/or GPS unit when the charging switch is "on". It's barely noticeable over road noise once you're moving, however.

Haven't used it, primarily because it forces you to use your device in portrait mode (which was a non-starter for me).
I have the same OnCourse mount and my unit also has interference in the mount's speaker when the phone charging is turned on. It's like a constant clicking sound - not terribly loud though, so road noise drowns it out. But then again, I drive a Lancer Evo and there's not much noise dampening material in the car so YMMV.
One other thing is my Hermes doesn't plug into the cradle's mini USB connector easily. I have to rock the phone back and forth a little bit in order for the phone to seat onto the USB connector. Obviously a tolerance issue, but I don't know if it's caused by my phone or the cradle.
The clips are pretty decent. They have 3 notches so you can vary the distance the cradle mounts from the air vent. The clips sit in a slot on the cradle so you can slide them horizontally to change the distance between the two clips. Pretty useful for getting the clips to line up between the air vent's vertical slats.
Overall, it's a pretty decent product.

Yep, I assume it's the radio in the phone, although I haven't done a thorough investigation as to the source. I just don't charge it in the cradle unless I really have to. Kinda wish the powered speaker would function without the power cord, but oh well.

Ditto. Not terribly easy to get it mated with the USB connector on the way in. Or very easy to get it out, for that matter as it's pretty much impossible to avoid pressing all the buttons on either side of the phone when grasping it. But, like anything, you eventually get the hang of it.

Really hard to say, if your ciggie lighter (power socket) and your battery both have a good ground connection then you should be right..
I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I always use two bits of bluetack to fix the Vario to my dashboard behinf the steering wheel.
Is virtually free and very effective. You can also use a cigarette lighter to USB thing to power your GPS unit and/or the Vario, or wite a USB cable into the dashboard if you feel like it.
Semson / OnCourse car kit
I got the unit from Semson using the horn (global 9) suction mount. That's the non flexible hose mount. Whoever found that link, thank you. You saved me good amount of money compared to the OnCourse device. I highly recommend the horn mount as well. It's just a big chunk of plastic. Billion times better than those flexible ones...those shake like hell.
I noticed also that when my phone is charging, the speaker makes all kinds of noise on this thing. But if I turn the charging off, it goes whisper quiet.
It's pretty much crap as a hands-free device though. The other end always hears echo and stuff. But it's great as phone holder for TomTom use with loud announcements and such. I got the RJ11 to miniUSB and it charges my Holux mini-GPS (keychain type) one fine as well.
So far I'm rather happy with it.
Anyone use this with the Visiontac Bluetooth GPS?
Its not on either of the lists, and doesn't charge with a regular mini usb plug, some some other unique plug.
Does anyone know why they say it wont work with a Holux GPS device? Does the unit draw more power? or is the USB pinout different? I'm thinking it should be quite easy to mod the cable if thats all that's holding it back from working properly.
Also on that matter I imagine you could disconnect the speaker internally if you didn't want to use it.

If I'm not mistaken, the USB port on the Holux is for serial data only.

Or, easier yet, disconnect the power to the mount. Although, I believe the USB connection also stifles the Hermes speaker as if you'd plugged headphones into it.

No, I'm pretty sure its for charging, as that is the only port on the device, and I always charge mine in the car or off my pc with a standard USB cable. Heck, it even came with a USB Car Charger...
I may risk it and just order one, I'm sure it can be hacked to work, unless its an issue of not having enough power or something.
I assume that I could also use the USB port to charge my Jawbone Bluetooth headset? No reason why it shouldn't work is there?
Thanks,

Intel introduces new SSD for mobile platforms - possible replacement for Athena HD?

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...uces-tiny-flash-drive-for-mobile-devices.html
If you look at the specs, it will certainly fit. We'll have to wait a little longer before they get it up to at lest 8GB (max size eventually will be 16GB, currently it will only come in 2GB and 4GB sizes). PATA interface (SATA in the future), so an interface between it and the Athena will be necessary.
that looks like a go, now it is not a question of will it fit but rather how do we get it and hook it up
Yup. I forget the type of connection that the Athena has, can someone confirm? Then we just need to find a converter that will fit in the rest of the open space left by the old HD.

PATA ZIF
IIRC
It will be fantastic if anyone can swap the hard disk. It should shed some weight and improve battery life.

I am not sure, but I have read somewere, that vueflo sensor is ither in the interface or in the micro drive. It actualy has to roles.
1 - tries to prevent the drive to crash while Athena fells down.
2 - sends signals to vueflo app.
I am not sure if this is true, but if... then we have a problem.
Wouldnt be a problem for me, I dont use viewflo. It feels like a marketing gimmick not quite ready for production. Maybe others have better results.
Huh, so we may have a direct pata to pata connection... another piece that fits. Pun intended. Maybe that would leave room for a vibrate feature, something the Athena could use!
Myson is fascinated with Vueflo, but I don't like it at all, and have always regarded it as a nuisance.

if used properly when only need to scroll and turned off when not i actually love it. great to show off the iphone isnt only phone with all those fancy sensors and stuff. the athena project is trying to make that orientation app that uses vueflo to roate screen so it might be nice to hold onto it. once that app is done we will have more info on vueflo and might be able to use it for other things.
I'm neutral on Vueflo. I always disable it when I use Opera on rare occasions. Just don't let it gets in the way when considering using SSD from Intel.
I would like to see the motion sensors used to launch apps/macros (shake left twice to launch PocketStella, down twice for wmWifiRouter, down 3 times for screen brightness...), but loosing that functionality to gain a larger SSD would be a no-brainer.
Especially if we could then fit in a vibrate motor. As for controlling vibrate, maybe the unused viewflow lines would be useful, unless there is another controllable output somewhere. Find a pin with direct battery access to drive the motor through a relay, then control the relay with the viewflo lines (assuming one of them is an output) or another control line. Then build a driver that would monitor if the phone was ringing and trigger the vibrate. I know, far-away dreams...
So the big question is, with the new X7510 16Gb flash drive, who makes THAT unit?
The X7510 still has vueflo, so perhaps the flash drive does as well.

Head phone is not working!!!

Tonight I try to listen some music on my Tg01 and I discovered the head phone is not working, the answer button on the lead is not functioning either. I dont think is the lead because I keep it very safely and very careful not to damage it, I suspect is the micro usb jack is faulty but I can sync with PC with no problem. Have any one have this problem before?
If I can`t solve it I just return it to Orange for a new phone Phone just 6 months old. Hate to buy a new lead because I just can`t find it and I don`t think that`s the problem, not to mention waste of money.

Hi adzman808, I thing that this question was brilliantly explained in Modaco's forum by Kevin, some months ago....
http://www.modaco.com/content/toshiba-tg01-tg01-modaco-com/298887/headphone-amplified-sound-output/
I modified a couple of speakers (following the Kevin's instructions) with success. I had exactly the same issue, speakers worked perfectly but, sometimes, sound source changed randomly to device's speaker.
I just soldered a couple of resistors between left /right line and ground, as Kevin said, and problem has been definitively solved.
I'm sure that you have he same problem. By the way, in Modaco I was(am) Xdalover. Nice to hear from you in Xda dev as well.
Hope this help you
Cheers

I believe this is a uUSB control software (driver) issue - have also experienced on occasion.
Typical scenario is when the TG01 has been on charge via the uUSB; unplug the charger and then plug in the external audio connector (eg. one of my home-brew cables used to feed an external 5.1 sound setup - see the Modaco post Pere has just flagged) - device refuses to put audioout to the uUSB and will only play via the speaker.
I have previously resorted to a S/R which evidently reset the uUSB controller to respond correctly to insertion of a B plug wired for audio.
Adzman808's solution is evidently achieveing the same result but by forcing a change of function call by initiating the phone call - hadn't thought of that trick !
I'm still looking unsuccessfully for source of the relevant chip that I identified in the previous post about the uUSB which is supposed to be able to support external charging and audio out and some other functions at the same time....
