April 1st update released! GPS and wifi issues solved!! - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello Prime owners! Asus has just released the 04012012 update with the following fixes:
-GPS issues fixed!! GPS chip power flow enhanced, can now lock on while you are on the toilet! However, it is recommended that you open a window as using the toilet can interfere with the gps signal.
- Face unlock added! Just stare at the Prime's front camera and the Prime will open or be turned off based off your looks! Best to use after a morning shower as ugly looks can cause the Prime to reboot in disgust.
- Wifi has been completely fixed!! The Prime can now pick up a perfect signal 300 feet from your router. Signal can be enhanced if yuo gently rub the center of the screen with a circular motion.
- Battery life increased! Battery can now last two days in a singal charge. to activate this power feature, simply hold down the power button an select shut down. The prime will beep with a confirmation of the power saving mode being activated!
- Random reboots fixed! no ore rebooting when watching long sessions of porn via the web browser. Now you can stream safely without stopping your strokes with your right hand (or left)
The update will be released in the next hour or so in Europe, Germany, Africa, china and Iraq followed lastly to the U.S.
Also, Gary has chosen to pass on any secret info to me first, so I am now the official Asus contact person!!
Love you guys!

Hmm, that's odd as its working fine for me. Let me ask, did your dinner last night include beans by any chance?? I think the chemicals produce by beams are strong enough to still cause a weak GPS signal.

Damnit! I had a feeling this could be the cause. Now I will have to wait for the devs to come out with beanfix2.0.

Chances Of Getting A Propper Prime?

I'm hearing nothing but problems. I hear the majority of primes have some form of defect. It seems to me that ASUS screwed up pretty royally with there launch.
I'm in canada and i have a preorder on some small time website. Whats the story? is it only these first few that have defects?
I doubt i would be able to return it to my retailer so im really worried about getting a defected model.
Most things are some small issues so worst that happens is you keep it for a few weeks until stocks fill up and can exchange
My hunch is that the first batch of Primes were defective. ASUS halted the shipment to Canada and delayed the shipment to the US so they could examine existing Prime inventory and correct the wifi problem. They likely had to open each prime to fix it, which likely caused new problems which seen reported here like the Prime screens bleeding light, and looseness, and markings on the basel.
Hopefully those who are waiting in pre-order hell will be the lucky ones who will get the next new batch of Primes fresh off the conveyor belt with the wifi problem fixed.
That's my hunch.

screen bleeding, bad wifi, something else.. lol (not dead pixel, could care less)
plus a couple of peoples are just crapping out on them. those issues would bug the crap out of me.
and i couldn't return it to my provider, but could i return it to ASUS?
If your retailer had them in stock you could return it to them if not have to go through asus
As for issues don't worry many people have perfect tablets some just got unlucky Asus will sort it all out

tell you what. my prime is perfect. not a problem at all.
Mines not. My gamestop prime has horrid wifi screen bleeding and no gps... It actually just rebooted after freezing while viewing this very thread... I just want the tablet to work... I hope gamestop will exchange it with a version thatcomes in jan or feb... Im not even a room over and i am between -70 and -80 on wifi analyzer.... Awful.... But i am willing to wait if it means i can get working prime
kinda makes me glad I didn't get a prime now. after going 4 tfs I wondered if asus could do better with their second Gen tablet... doesn't seem like they've done much qc this go round either.
guess I'll be getting another Sammy when they get released.
I've been using mine all day long, haven't noticed any problems with mine, no screen bleed...wifi works good for my situation, only thing I can see wrong is it looks like I may have one dead pixel but it doesn't bother me enough..plus if it does bother me ill just wait a little but for fresher models

I'm actually glad I ordered my 64 GB now... once I accepted the fact that I wasn't going to get it before Christmas, I am glad and hopeful that some of these initial problems might be ironed out & better quality control put in place, in the next few weeks before I'm expected to receive mine; the rush to push the product out before the holidays being over now.

My Prime is working great. Everything works well including wi-fi and GPS.
No bleeding, battery is great and no lagginess whatsoever, no matter what I am doing.
I doubt "the majority" have problems. It's just that people are more likely to post their problems with their Primes (in the hopes to get them fixed) than others whose Primes are working well.
It's certainly not a clean launch by any means. But to say the majority of Primes are defective is a jumping to conclusions.
If your unit is defective, return it for a new one.
Just got to open mine today for Christmas, although it arrived from Newegg 2 days ago. I also got the docking station. Knock on wood, mine seem to be working just fine so far.
heh...mine was working flawlessly...that is until I charged it to 100% and powered it off. It now will not turn on so I guess I got a nice shiny cutting board for Christmas.

Not to make light of the situation, but it probably would make a good cutting board - did you see the video of that guy cutting apples on the screen? You would need to make sure the juices don't ruin the circuit board, though.

Yup, just there is but it did nothing when I pushed it. The only life in the unit is a green LED when the charger's plugged into the wall. It doesn't even show up on my PC when I plug it in. Good and truly dead it seems.
At least I got a couple of hours out of it before it died. Other than the whole catastrophic power failure thing it was a real pleasure to use...except maybe for the vibration...it also seemed a little busted.

Every new tablet had it's issue. Look at all the early threads for each tablet. Some people had issues, some people didn't. Your choice whether you want to venture down that road or wait. But what I have seen is that the later models, it has taken longer to get root because the development had the earlier models.

this thread isnt about whether or not tablets normally come out with issues, its about whether i should take a chance, its about if theres a chance of defects in the later models.

And I answered you: Your choice whether you want to venture down that road or wait. There may or may not be defects down the road, we're not there yet so no one knows that answer, only Asus, maybe.

GPS Road Test after ICS

OK, so I tried the unit in the car and placed on the passenger seat. It received a signal but keep losing it. I then moved it closer to the dash by the radio and it kept the signal much better. The third scenario was I placed it lying down on the dash and it kept the signal with no problem, or loss of signal.
Conclusion on the GPS is that it is definitely better with ICS update but a stand alone GPS it is not, unless it is mounted on your win shield with some type of Mount. Problem is that it then blocks a good potion of your view.
Here is a link to the video I shot this afternoon during my drive to test the GPS function. Please dont atempt this on your own... I am a profesional http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCFoo_jMWOE&feature=youtu.be
Standing in my yard it locks on a signal within 20-30 seconds and grabs 11-13 Sat's and locks on 10-12 of them.
Now that GPS does work it makes it much more difficult to return, except that it has some minor screen bleed on the upper right side of the screen. Other than that the tablet is amazing with the update. Desisions, desisions
Two observations...
1) Your route was a short straight line. There are algorithms in most GPS s/w to compensate for signal loss. A straight line doesn't show how well the Prime was actually keeping up with the satellites.
2) The jumping and stuttering of the arrow signifying your position would indicate loss of signal.
There are some videos posted of a G-Tab using CoPilot. You'll see the difference.
Who on earth would use their tablet for a turn for turn navigation? Dont you have a smart phone? The only thing I would want GPS for is weather etc which probably wouldnt need too much of a signal

I do. And I'm tired of people that don't questioning why anyone else would. You do whatever you want. Nav s/w makers wouldn't be offering tablet-ized versions of their products if people weren't buying them.
It was meant to show people that the tablet did lock a signal. It wasn't a trip to Canada. I had absolutely no lock on Satellites before the update not in my yard and most defiantly not in my car. Now it locks without any issues, both in my car and in my yard. Some my find the information useful while others may not. Do with it as you wish.

I don't use it as to Navigate, it was just to demonstrate that after the ICS update I was able to lock on to a signal. Before the update I had Nada.

Its turn by turn with voice prompt. Turn left on XXX. In 1/4 mile turn right onto xxx. You do not have to actually watch the screen. I do not see what issue people have with the concept of someone using a Tablet for GPS. When I had a Xoom I put it on the passenger seat and listened to the prompts.

I could give 2 craps about my GPS, but it works fine for me. My 4.6" screen on my phone is fine, when I don't want to use the nav in my car. 10" is ludicrous for my need as an in car van unit.
Thank you OP for your test that was summarily dismissed by some certain people.

I use it when I travel, both here and in Europe.
Here are the reasons:
1) The larger screen real estate gives you a greater view of where you are and what's upcoming.
2) Tablet nav s/w has a split view making turns and expressway exits easier to navigate.
3) The tablet's battery will go five times longer than my i9100's.
4) Tablets have better GPS chips and antennas than phones and (not in this case) get and keep a signal better.
5) My phone's free to use as a media player and to take BT calls.
6) I don't drain my phone's battery.
I have a stand for it with a thin bean bag bottom and it sits on the passenger seat unless I'm with someone and then they hold it.
I'm not justifying myself to you, but some might be curious what the benefits are. And I really don't care whether others use their phone, stand-alone GPS, a compass, a sextant, or Citgo maps.
NO problem, thanks for your input.

If it's unimportant to you, why are you so hell bent on convincing other people that it should be unimportant to them too? Granted, people using tablets for navigation are a minority but it was important to enough people that they returned their Prime's over it. People trying to convince others that it's unimportant are as bad as what you're accusing me of.
Very cool. Thanks for putting this together to show what is indeed possible. I think this is the first video we have seen of a working navigation while driving. I understand results will vary, but you give us hope.

I am not hell bent on anything. From reading past posts of yours, you are not unintelligent. Here is somebody who took the time and ingenuity to satisfy the whims of people just like you to show that his GPS works, and you can't get off your ass to do the exact same test, using your imposed parameters, but instead just bash the person for showing their results. Seriously.. wtf. Jeesh.

I'd get a 3g A-GPS enabled tablet if i'd really rely on its GPS and would want it to use as my main navigation device. It really helps alot when driving through tunnels and stuff.

Just bought my second Prime from Bestbuy... and..

Just bought a Prime from Local BB here in Yakima, WA. Four just arrived today in stock. 32GB grey. After a failed pre order prime BX serial. (see my open prime thread in sig) This was a C2. No Light bleed. WIFI works excellent. Only thing that didnt work was GPS. However, I was expecting this. (Not using this for traveling only bedtime / couch surf)
WIFI range on this thing matched with my kids iPad 2! I was able to get WIFI in areas where my BX never did. Plus i am actually pulling my full bandwidth. 30mbs / 5mbs. I tested every area of my house right along side my kids iPad 2. Same results! I am totally amazed and very happy!!
Modded prime with working GPS will be mounted permenant in my vehicle.
New C2 from BB with its sleekness will be my bedtime / couch toy!
good news to hear then. Congrats.
good for you I was lucky and got a perfect one in january. Its such a great device^^ i have no idea why you would get an ipad over this.
have fun.

There havent been any significant differences between the serial numbers. So you're good
There have been cases with other devices where they actually improved as new batches came out, but the primes have been consistantly good from the beginning. Even though this forum suggests otherwise. But you will only see the people with problems making posts so its really misleading.

yes he is serious but lets not get into that never ending debate. before we have to pull the poll up showing over 80% of prime owners are happy with their device. over 400 prime owners in xda voted that way. And Asus and CNet interview statement showing less than 1% of primes are defective/have been returned.
I do admit, there are some units with issues though Smile.
its a tired debate. for the most part, majority is past that and most primes seem to be performing fine one way or another.

sorry forgot to add "according to ASUS RMA numbers" And thats about the only thing we can rely on if we are talking facts. But yeah lets burry this discussion.
as i said you will only see the people complaining in these forums... Go to an [insert random manufacturer] forum and you will find people complaining big time. If you hang around here all day and read every whine post you will get the feeling that every 2nd prime is broken There are units with issues as there always are when a new product gets released. That and people are just crazy sometimes. Look at ipad3 it got a little hot after playing some intense game for 3 hours and people start running back to the shop with it...
They should have touched my old old overclocked Celeron which was running at 90° C all his life.
Well I just received mine today and im happy wifi is strong gps locked fast and maps works great I did not try BT and really I don't care too much about it mmhhh well if I'm getting the keyboard probably I should lol

I am happy to hear your newest Prime is working so well. Did you get an identical one or did you change the color? I'm guessing 32g with the 540 price tag. I was keeping up with your GPS mod thread and I'm guessing you must be very excited to have a brand spanking new Prime that you can start something else on. Just kidding. I finally have my 6 week RMA adventure coming to an end and Asus is sending me a C30 unit delivering Friday by FedEx. Their doing an advance RMA for me and I am grateful for that. I'll do a thorough test on the weekend and let you all know
Just got a new C30 from Amazon today. I will be waiting on my refund from my BCO that sat in RMA for over a month before Asus offered me a refund.
I didn't have problems with wifi on the last one but this one is certainly at the same speeds as my laptop (very close to the router). GPS was non existent until I tried a GPS fix (Transformer Prime Test Build 2 - Google Specific No-SSL v3.1), GPS is still a work in progress, but I have hope (even if I have to mod it externally).
Very happy with this prime. The feedback you can't hardly feel but at least it doesn't rattle like my last one.
I have a c30 just received today so far so great ,I'm confused what exactly is the gps issue I want try it tomorrow so k.want to know to compare since today I just locked gps up and tried a navigation and seems to work great thanks

Get and Try app in market "GPS test" You can see how many birds are in view. I want to correct myself in original post. I said GPS didn't work as expected. It does work on this C2 tablet. However not very well. I get some birds in view. When I pull up google maps. It puts me like two or three houses down from where I actually live (indoors). Of course my phone is accurate within like 12feet (indoors). I haven't tried outdoors with this c2 yet.
Let us know about the C3.
OK I downloaded but don't know how use it if you have me more instruction I'm happy to help and let y'all know how works in my C30
Is there any way to take screen shot on an unrooted transformer prime
Nor sure is what you looking for but, in views it was 10-14 in use 8-12
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-2
You can take a screen shot by holding volume down & power at the same time. If you had a GPS problem yours would say 0 like mine.. and not change even outside clear view of the sky. I just use bluetooth2GPS between my Nexus though if I need it on the Prime so its no biggie to me personally but it sounds like yours is fine

Thanks! If I can marry this prime right now I would. (However, I don't think WA allows you to marry an electronic device. )
I was a little apprehensive on laying down another $540 for a tablet. But everything worked out fine. Going to buy the black tie protection as well. I should be all set.

may want to try square trade? I dont know much about square trade but I know enough about the geeksquad (used to work there) not to get black tie, it might also be cheaper.

GPS Kit Issues

This might be a duplicate thread, i looked but didnt see one... anyways....
got my dongle today. nothing but problems. i had 5 random reboots in the little over 30 minutes that i had the dongle attached. There was also a HUGE reduction in overall performance. The weirdest thing is that it kept getting stuck in landscape mode after the dongle was removed. I had to reboot to get it back to portrait. Also drained over 20% of my battery in those 30 minutes.
the GPS did work extremely well though.
Has anyone had any of these issues?
You running latest firmware .21?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
he must be or else the dongle wouldnt work. i would highly doubt the dongle is causing reboots. cant really see any reason why it would. i havent had any of those issues. device performs just fine with dongle on or off.
I'd say op best bet is to reboot. cut power off n leave off for a few seconds then cut power back on and see how things act. if things still acting funny, try a soft reset. you do this by putting a paperclip in the little hole underneath the memory card slot. you will see the prime reset and reboot. then try dongle and everything else then.
Duh, my bad I totally forgot about that

sweet. doing the reset seems to have fixed everything. cant wait to try it out on my hour long drive to work in the morning. thank guys

I'm about to go on a road trip this Sunday about an 8 to 10 hour drive. I'll keep my GPS dongle on the whole time... See how long my tablet lasts and how well the GPS dongle performs. I'll record it on video and report back on my thread.

Did you soft-reset with the dongle attached? I'm about to go home from work and hope mine is there when I get there.

I'm sorry, induldge my ignorance, but I thought that the 2 reboot methods were different ways of doing the same thing.

Glad it seems to work so far. Alot of times, a reset will clear up any software mishaps that happen. Same as with installing some apps. They usually tell you that if you experience issues, try rebooting/reseting to clear issue up. The device restarts with the program or whatever more settled in.

It really shouldn't matter. I guess you could try it with it on but probably won't make a difference.

Kinda/sorta..lol. soft reset is a more drastic reboot, IMO. its usually used if the prime freezes up or starts acting up alot. You even have another kind that I believe is called a cold boot or a hard boot or something. That involves holding power button and volume down at the same time(while power is still on, I believe) until prime reboots. Then keep hold it until you see some lettering across the top of the screen. Then let go. Then it'll say device will reset/reboot if nothing is pressed within a few seconds.
I always do it in order if the previous one didn't work or fix problem. A regular reboot(power off then on again), then a soft reset, then a cold/hard boot.
How long did it take to receive the dongle?
I signed up for the free dongle almost a month ago and still have yet to receive it, and my ASUS account shows only that my request has been submitted... How long did it take you to receive this dongle?
UPDATE: I still have yet to receive this...

Then you submitted it 10 days ahead of its actual release, you should really only be counting from the 16th. That means it's only been 7 business days since the dongle has been shipping. That's not much.
Plus it seems to me that everyone who registered early seems to be in the same boat. I ordered 4/17 and am also in the same boat; something makes me think they're going to try and deny it or something since I listed the date I actually received the Prime in the mail as the purchase date. Not really, lol, I'm sure I'll get it, just wish it would hurry up >.>
On the 30th (1st for me) is when everyone should start making a real fuss. 10 business days is plenty of time to get something like this shipped out.

I submitted mine on the 16th still saying being processed !!
I will be very surprised if they do ship out by the 30th. Asus yet again proves they could not arrange a piss up in a brewery.
They should not have announced etc untill they was in position to deliver. Seems 99% of people who have got them are American, haven't heard one person from UK say they have shipped status yet alone received it
Got my kit today. I'm just posting to let everyone know that I won't be using it. One, because I'm too classy to have a gigantic police-wannabe console in my car as a GPS unit. And two, because I'm not hippy enough to aimlessly explore woods and essentially emulate homeless people in a park.

The main problem is your location. When the boat leaves China, first it has to navigate past the troubled waters by the Koreas and Indonisia. Once clear of that, it will wait for a Naval ship to be near it in case of Pirates by Somalia. Once clear of that, it has to time it's trip around the African Cape with good weather....Once past that...again wait for Naval protection as it goes up the Abrian sea, thru the Suez Canal. After it clears the Suez, it again has to be careful of the flareups in the Mid-East. After it clears all that, it's clear sailing (or steaming) to England. However, once it gets there, it is again delayed because it has to wait for a slot to clear in port since all the slots are taken up with ships unloading parts and equipment for the Olympics. But first, Perishable food comes first.
Hope this helps explain the difficulty you have.

I've also had a series of reboots with the dongle, often while the tablet idle and the screen off. A hard reboot didn't help. I'll try a soft reset with the dongle on.

What a Patronising post
I am 45 years old not 5
Like I said They should not have announced etc untill they was in position to deliver
A soft reset didn't solve the reboot issue for me. Whenever the dongle is in, my tablet is liable to reboot, whether it's actively working or idle. Reboots appear to be independent of power mode and whether satellite location service is on or off.
I noticed early on that it also wasn't autorotating, but I think only before the first reboot. I didn't notice any extraordinary battery drain, although I didn't have it on for all that long.

I just got my dongle today but sadly it doesn't seem to be hardly doing anything. It took around a minute or two before it got a lock and it still only got a few of em.
Its not rebooting or anything from what I've seen. Gonna reboot it again and let it settle to see if it does better.

Omate Truesmart - Shoddy build. Beware

My Kickstarter Omate Truesmart arrived yesterday. Super excited.
Today I wore it as a wristwatch for the first time. Within 2 hours, just wearing it on a standard tube journey, nothing untoward or unusual - not banged or something- it had lost the power button. [Edit: By this I mean it's fallen off and gone missing, if that's not clear!] I now can't turn it on.
On the plus side, the battery life is amazing. You'll never have to charge it - the battery is good for the lifetime of the device!
Now how do I contact Omate and tell them this isn't right?
UPDATE: OMATE did indeed swap the watch for a working one in the end. It took a while, but they are worth talking to with issues. Credit to em, in the end.
Try unscrewing the back and press the battery in whilst trying to turn it on. Some of the watches seem to be a bit loose. If it works, you'll probably need to wedge a bit of card between the battery and the watch back.
Have you tried the other battery?

How does this solve the problem of the power button falling off and going missing? *baffled*
Perhaps I should have been more explicit. This isn't a software bug. The button fell off in casual wear. As per subject line: Shoddy build. All there is now is a hole in the side of the watch.

Post a picture, people will understand it better. For some, english is not their first language.
Regarding warranty issue, contact them through one of the emails: http://omate.com/contacts.html or go to their official forum and ask people for advice. I'm sure someone will chime in with a suggestion. I'm not doubting you, but still have a hard time understanding how that button can fall out since it supposed to go inward.
Thanks. I sent an email to them. Bit worried that some people have had trouble contacting them though.

Got onto the tube with the button, pulled back sleeve to check the time a bit later, and no button or sign of it....
Anyone else had issues? I hope this is a random issue, not the first of a wave!

I'd need access to one for starters. And willingness to put the fiddly thing together...
For the record, despite several attempts to elicit a response from Omate on several email addresses, I've received no meaningful reply from them on this.
For the moment, I have to say: Caveat Emptor with this company.

Saw the image posted. It looks like you lost not only the button but the stainless steel bushing that was compression seated into the case. I tried to remove the button and bushing from the case on one and gave up when I started looking for a hammer. Even though it sucks, I would consider you experience the exception and not the rule.

That's something. Though little consolation. Someone else over on the Omate forums says he's lost the power button as well. So there's more than one gone this way...
The news is that Omate finally wrote back:
Please share your address details so we can register you for spare parts replacement as soon as our service center is in place in your country.
Thanks

Less than stellar. But it's a response...

So yes - it's worth persevering. I think they are probably understaffed, and rather busy, and you must be very patient; but they do the right thing by customers in the end.
