Using another lines upgrade at BestBuy - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok, I have an upgrade available on an extra line that is used, but rarely used. Pretty much when the kids go spend the night somewhere I send that phone with them.
I don't want to upgrade that device, it never gets used and I don't want to waste an upgrade on a feature phone.
Sprints online support said that I could order the phone with that upgrade and activate it on whatever line I wanted too.
I called Best Buy earlier today, as I have several gift cards I'd like to go ahead and burn on this. But the guy there said the phone had to be activated on the line the upgrade is for. I was planning on picking it up tomorrow morning, but I don't want to spend cash on it, would rather blow the gift cards.
Anyone know if BestBuy Can/'t use an upgrade for a different line, and activate it on my line? I'm hoping the guy I talked to was just a moron.

Just activate it on the line and go home and have Sprint switch the numbers.

I do this all the time and yes they always had to activate it on the line that is eligible then u can switch it to whatever line u want after that

You have over 3k post, you obviously root phones and now you're to lazy to make a number switch, which only takes a few minutes.
Whats more crazy is you couldn't figure out you could do this on your own?

You can do it online too.
I did this with mine. Asked the guy not to turn it on to activate in best buy because I was in a hurry. Got home and had sprint move esn to my number so the phone on the lone I upgraded wouldn't be deactivated. Sprint did it and I turned it on and it updated profile with my phone number data.

I agree. I did this as well, took sprint all of 20 minutes to swap the lines on the phones and all is well.

Have done this at both the BB and local sprint store on a number of occasions with no problem. HOWEVER, be warned that you can no longer to this with an "Airave" line even if it is showing up on the computer as eligible for an upgrade.
Sprint apparently figured this one out and put and end to it according to my local Sprint guy.

I have an upgrade on April 3rd..how can i get it sooner?...I was wondering how I can persuade a Verizon rep into giving it to me now, (or when TB comes out) anyone ever accomplish this? or is there no way they would do that?

1) Good luck on the early upgrade. My NE2 is due in May. If it works for you, send him my way
2) If the TBolt release date keeps slipping you and I will both be able to use our upgrades

I did it when my OS went out on blackberry storm and when my HTC Incredible's display got sweat behind it. I was also having signal issues with the HTC. Now I have a Facinate (my third) with all kinds of issues and am hoping to get it swapped out too. The bottom line is... I don't think they will swap out phones without you having major documented issues with your current phone. I'm very lucky that I have a great Verizon store by me and understanding reps. Just my 2 cents. Heck, who knows!!? It doesn't hurt to ask! I Good luck!

Someone on here awhile back suggested getting your upgrade date moved forward under the guise of wanting to order an iPhone, then since it is changed in the system, get the Thunderbolt instead.

If you want to get the T-Bird before your upgrade date, you can buy it new by adding another line to your account -- $10. (The price of the T-Bird is the same whether you're upgrading or buying it new.) After you buy, go to Verizon store and switch the phone numbers so your current number is on the T-Bird. Once your upgrade date is passed, cancel the extra line. You'll pay $10 extra for a couple of months, but you'll have the new T-Bird.
This may sound shady, but it's perfectly legit if you think about it. And no, they won't move up your upgrade date.
I spoke to a rep on the phone yesterday and asked about the same thing (my upgrade is on 4/8). She told me that the most they can move your upgrade date is 30 days. So I suggest calling them on 3/3 and asking them about it.

I keep an old flip phone just to use as a third line phone..... but yes you need to have a data plan with every smartphone and I think you need a phone on every line.
Before Verizon changed their upgrade rules, you were able to upgrade after 13 months on a 2yr contract. If it was on a family plan, it had to be the main line. I was able to do this every since the BB Tour came out. I got an Eris 4 months later at the discounted price. I did this when the D2 came out as well. Now it took me calling back and forth until I got a cool rep and did it for me. Each rep had their reasons why they couldnt and why the others did it for me werent supposed to. To get the D2, took me 3 days of trying of about 3-8 calls a day. I upgrade on that time, 11 months early. When I called today, I was told, wont be happening anymore because of their new policy.
W/e you decide to do, you have a better chance of doing it over the phone as the rules are different for them than retail. I have to wait until July, so I feel your pain. =( But it will be the first time I have ever used my new every 2 cuz I have never waited this long before, lol.

This information was good to know, I have the upgrade on the same date (4/3) but I'm not going to bother pulling strings until an exact release date is announced. How exactly did you convince Verizon to move your upgrade date? I'm just curious which number I should call when it gets announced so I can try to negotiate with them.
I just went through the 611 on my phone and selected the upgrade option. When the rep answered, I straight up asked lol. The only catch is you have to call within the 30 days of your upgrade. You can't move your upgrade date until then.

Airwave upgrade

I thought you couldn't upgrade an Airwave but long story short I went to sprint to buy another phone and they wouldn't sell me one off contract due to store policy. But he said my Airwave had an upgrade and if I order the phone he would upgrade it without me changing phone numbers.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
is it a corprate store because if so that doesnt sound right they get payed commision for selling contracts and he might have been trying to swindle you
You can't upgrade an airave line. Since they have to give you a phone number to give you the device, yes it does show up on your account as another line. However, any rep with 1/10th of a percent of a brain will realize that it's an airave line, and thus cannot be used to upgrade a phone.
If they do upgrade your airave line, sprint will find out about it, and charge you the full amount of the phone.
No it wasnt corporate store. I ordered the phone said it would be there in about 3 days. He said they don't do it often but sometimes there are exceptions.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
This has been done many times before and there are threads about how to do it. Last I knew of, Sprint was buckling down and closing this loophole. But evidently it can still be done.
On a lot of accounts it shows a message that we can't upgrade airrave lines, but on others they haven't posted the note yet, my manager did one the other day
I just tried to do it at bestbuy.com and it will let me....but now idk, I'm having second thoughts since I'm not digging it that Sprint could catch on and bill me full retail when my regular line is eligible on June 1

I can confirm that as a customer there are no negative repercussions except the loss of any mail in rebates. They are systematically flagging accounts to warn reps not to do it, and threaten reps about doing it. But the risk is all on the reps side.
At what store would doing this upgrade be most successful at? Best buy or sprint store?

Just a friendly warning, the sale seems to be linked to specific zip codes. The link in the OP is setup for Garfield NJ, 07026 and the one I actually used was for Spring TX. If I updated the zip to my real zip code, the sale price is $149. Their system will also AUTOMATICALLY make your City, State, zip that of which the link takes you to.
Now I placed my order, realized the address issue and will contacted them tomorrow to modify my address. Not sure if that will effect the price I pay BUT one thing is for sure, its not going to cost me $217 either way.
I'll update here after I get the address corrected and confirm my price after. I figure I'll give it a day in their system to get to stick and then update the address.
I ordered yesterday for $149.99
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It should be noted that there is a $37 activation fee from Sprint.
I changed the zipcode to mine (here in chicago) and it kept the $119.99 price. And yes, there is a $36 activation fee, but this is still cheaper than $150 if you figure in the $10 google wallet credit...
$119.99
$36
-$10
-----------
$145.99
Not bad at all. Not the $10 I paid for my evo a few days before christmas (price match + rebate), but flipping that, I should net under $50 or less for the whole thing.
EVO for $99.99 if you have Bank of America
Log into your bofa account and click on the add it up link. click on cell phone deals and bofa will credit your account $50 if you buy using their link. I tried getting the $119.99-$50 add it up, but it won't work.
One or the other.
By the way, to get the $119.99 deal, do a google search for "wirefly friends and family" and click on the first non-ad link.
So to summarize, $119.99 if you don't have bofa
or
$99.99 if you have bofa using the add it up link.

How will they know? You don't activate through them. You buy from them, tell them it's for the upgradable line, then when you get it, you activate through Sprint and have them so the switch. Wirefly is out of the picture once you have the device.

Why is there an activation charge?
How is this any different than buying a phone off of Craigslist and getting it activated?
Edit:
Does Sprint charge $37 activation even if you get it from them anyway?
(If so, then this isn't an issue. Gotta pay it either way, right?)

Because you need to "activate" it on the carrier and it's no different, you would be paying the same charge no matter where you get the phone. Now, the activation fee did double but that puts Sprint in line with the other carrier's activation/upgrade fees and adds more cash to the "fix the network" pot.
*Activation is $36

I had this same intention. I called Wirefly and they do NOT let you use another line's upgrade for your own (idk why thats what he said). You would have to swap the upgradeable line with yours like others have said. Part of the reason is because their policy is to activate it themselves (I asked them if they could hold off on the activation, the guy said no) so its running by the time it gets in your hands

This doesn't entirely make sense. If you're upgrading, that would mean your existing device stops functioning when they activate the new one. This is obviously not acceptable. I'm quite confident you actually have to call in and activate it once you receive the device. THEN your old device stops functioning. Now if you're buying a new line of service then it may arrive activated (though past purchases from amazon for tmobile did require activation AFTER receipt of device).
ymmv.
Wirefly has a ad on its front Page saying free activation wheb adding a line or doing a new activation.
Food for thought to make it a even better deal...

Upgrading my phone w/ moms upgrade?

Hey guys my mom is offering me a phone on her upgrade so basically that means that I'll be getting her phone #(if the following doesn't work out) so let's begin. Is it possible to get the Evo on HER line(#) then call sprint and ask them to put the Evo that was meant for her # to MY #? The reason is that I have tons of peoples numbers and I don't want to stir confusion with my contacts. Another question is that I have a Nexus S, so let's say I can't put the Evo on my # so I just get her #. Is it possible for me to downgrade from a Nexus S to a dumb phone so my mom has no trouble with battery life and touch screens? Thanks guys, they probably sound like stupid questions since sprint just wants your money but I'm just trying to make sure I can. Anyways thanks!
Sprint will happily flip flop numbers between lines. In fact that's what they call it "flip flop". All you have to do is ask them. They didn't even charge me. Took like 3 seconds.
So the Evo that will be upgraded with her line can easily be switched over to my line?
Also can she keep using the flip phone she had before upgrading? Customer service would probably be wondering why she upgraded but is till using her old phone lol
They don't care. You have to have a data plan to get the LTE but the flip phone will still work on it.
they can and will just switch the upgrades. so basically she has an upgrade right now. you take that one and then whenever the date is for your upgrade that will become her upgrade.

If all else fails, just activate it on her phone, then swap her phone back to her old phone immediately, then you will be free to use that one as it will clear the ESN.

So as long as I don't activate the phone on my moms line it won't be charged with the 10$ data fee?
I used my wifes upgrade, no problem. Her contract gets reset instantly and you can activate the phone on any number.
You can't flip phones numbers around without sprints assistance. Account has to be tagged LTE or not. I can no longer activate my old evo through the web site, when could before it was tagged LTE.
One catch if you activate the phone on a line that is not your moms you waive the 30 day return policy. That is, you instantly own it.
You also lose mail-in rebates if not activated on your moms line, but that's not an issue this time with the lte, since it has instant rebate.

Keep Unlimited Data when Upgrading if you get a Home Phone Line

And for my 1000th post I wish to impart upon you all the knowledge I have just gained this afternoon.
If you upgrade you can keep your unlimited data if you add a home phone line for $20/mo. according the the guy at the Verizon store today.
Went in there to try to get my phone replaced under warranty, which they wouldn't do since it has a cracked screen, threatened to leave VZW and was offered an early upgrade. After I asked if my plan would change he said yes, it would go down to 2gb, but then he told me if I added a home phone line I could have unlimited. I have a home phone with AT&T so I'll just port my number over and I'll be set. (I did buy a Magic Jack that I keep forgetting to hook up but I can sell that and hopefully get a refund for the months of service I paid for.)
EDIT: The phone service is a wireless service. According to jayochs it's called Home Phone Connect.
You mean a land line?

That's some shady **** right there. I have unlimited and had my phone replaced under warranty with no issues. Don't go into the store when doing warranty stuff.
I wonder if Verizon is offering incentives to their store employees to get people off unlimited data. This isn't the first time I've heard of them telling ppl they won't warranty a phone if they don't switch off unlimited

I'd have to buy a wireless router/receiver(?) for $12 and the phone service is wireless. So technically I guess it isn't a land line... it's home phone service, $20/mo., call waiting, caller ID, nationwide calling...
Still thinking it through and wondering if that's better to pick up a new phone with new contract or buy a used one and keep unlimited without adding the home phone line. Plus I have to decide between the 2 phones he offered me for the same price but I don't want to hijack my own thread.

Sorry, didn't mention my screen is cracked. He said if he did it I'd just get charged for it later so they don't do it anymore.
I'd have to buy a wireless router/receiver(?) for $12 and the phone service is wireless. So technically I guess it isn't a land line... it's home phone service, $20/mo., call waiting, caller ID, nationwide calling...

that's called home phone connect. it's a little box that you can bring anywhere and it uses verizons network to make calls, but you can plug normal landline phones into it.
lol my store gives those boxes away for free. you just have to pay that 20 a month, and you get the reciever for nothin
That makes more sense than a land line! They have an ETF if you cancel before 2 years on the home phone connect right?

Well there goes my plan of trying to do that cancel thingy like on the hotspot and keep my unlimited. Doesn't sound like it would've worked anyway, seems any change triggers the loss of unlimited from what I've read.

All you need to do is an alternate upgrade then put the new device back on your line.

I don't understand. Can you explain what an alternate upgrade is?

they mean if you have a family plan and another line has the upgrade, you take that, but you upgrade it on that other line...then just do an ESN change to put it to your line, thereby keeping unlimited data, but f'ing up our commissions. lol
i don't do that for customers because then i lose ALL of the commission i would've made. verizon wants you to do alternate upgrades instead of just ESN changes. my store would get charged back all that commission money from verizon at the end of the month because it's not a technical upgrade. if you can find someone who's dumb enough to do it for you, then so be it.....but when you order yourself online, you don't have this problem. only when you goto a store with a physical salesman.
I have read so many threads on unlimited data. Things about being able to keep unlimited on a non family plan, being able to keep it if you pay full retail, this, etc. I am confused. How do I keep it. I certainly don't want this useless box to connect my land phone to lol.

If my salesman gets physical he's gonna lose a hell of a lot more than his commission.

Something tells me you can get very scary .
On a side note, I have one of these, works great. I keep a cordless phone plugged into it and I backfed it into my house wiring for another phone I have.

Don't do anything that modifies your contract and they won't take it away from you. Any other way will be depending on some type of promotion or special allowance. Buy a phone without using an upgrade (either by paying full price or buying used) and you'll keep unlimited data. Using an upgrade discount triggers a contract modification and you lose it.
