[Q] Play Music De-Authorizations - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, I sold my nexus 7 and 10 to buy a nexus 9 now that i have it I cant listen to music because it says i have too many devices and i cant deathorize anything else. I change devices constantly in a year, and that 4 devices deauthorizations per year is kind of stupid, is there any way past this?... If not I think ill be moving to spotify or some other alternative...

Just go to the Google Play Music Settings page (https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/settings) or manage them via the app (in the settings screen). Unless it's a regional thing you ought to be able to deauth more than 4 devices a year.

From what I have read its best to do it from the app vs on the site - seems to be a loophole for now on the limit. not sure if it will work after you have hit the limit. in that case I would look to contact google to get them to reset it.

the device limit is a reason I no longer use google music. I currently have 3 working nexus devices in front of me. one is getting flashed with the 501 update now. and I've had too update my tablets and phone 3 times already this month. so, I'd be well over the limit of authorized devices already ... if I used the service.. glad I didn't pay for it.

Just curious.

I was looking at my "play - market" purchase history and through the several phones and tablets I have went thru over the past couple of years I have almost purchased 100.00 in apps / games.
Luckily now on my note 90% still work with it, except for that whole "thd, tegra / nvidia" phase I went thru with the dell streak 7.
You guys think that's excessive? Every time I goto the market I find something new I want to try out at 99 cents, or 1.99 and of course that adds up.
Think Google Play will hang around for the long haul, and my bought apps will be transferable to new devices so long as they are still compatible?
Long as Android and Google are around I think you're safe.

I want to like it, I really do. BUT...

The design of this thing is awesome. Pair it with those monster 14 pound EACH speakers and man, that's drool worthy.
However, this device is kinda confusing to me. Is it a dumbed down receiver? Is it a dumbed down Google TV device? I can play vids from YouTube and and Google Play and music and that's it?
Where are the shots of what ever interface this will have? Where is Netflix? Huluu Plus? Amazon Prime? This seems to be the most limited - as far as what can be done with it from the get-go - device I have seen El Goog push out in a long while. Sad.
As good as it looks, it seems rushed to me. Why pay $299 for something that is simply novelty and available in many different flavors already?
Till they add a bit to it, or someone hacks it and makes it much better. Sorry Goog, I pass.
While they were doing the presentation, I understood it as it was just a receiver that connects to some speakers or a tv, so once you connect to it (I forget if it was WIFI or NFC) you can just play music or videos on the speakers or tv; and anybody that connects to it is able to play what they want on it.
It looks great and all but for $300 its definitely not worth the price tag.
This is on the network so I hope that it has easy access to Windows shares and that it will be able to play 1080p MKVs with lossless audio.
I haven't played around with playback on devices.
Even though it is pricey if it has this full feature set then I may pick this up. Would be a nice improvement over plugging in a laptop to the TV.

From what I was told yesterday, it won't. The guys here at IO said it would only stream from them (movies and music stored in their cloud or Play Store).

I'm hoping there is at least some logic within the box that allows you to play more sophisticated content.

It's $300 because it's supposedly actually manufactured in America... so do with that what you will
I'm still very confused as to what it is/how it works. Doesn't seem worthwhile.
seems like the coolest looking piece of crap.
The engadget preview says much of the price is because of the built in amp, which, IMHO is totally unnecessary. I have a surround sound system.. why would I want stereo sound from that puny little thing?
Drop the amp and $100 off the pricetag and this thing will sell itself. Oh, and unlock the damn thing. Only plays stuff from the play store? Google is starting to sound like apple...

Really? It has a USB port explicitly for the purpose of hacking it. I have no doubt the Nexus Q will be a cool device to own once there's enough dev support for it.
It seems like Google released the Nexus Q with the idea that the android community would figure out what to do with it.
Nexus q + dev support = sold. However I will wait for the support first instead of buying and hoping....
Its an interesting device, but I'm disappointed that they at least didn't add an "airplay" style connection for displaying your phone or tablet screen on the tv via wifi. That would at least make it more appealing for the price
I sat there during the keynote thinking what a killer feature this would have been for a google tv. Instead it's a more expensive and more limited device.
I came away from i/o feeling like the google tv is being de-prioritized and they want to push this device instead because it's locked down to google play content. There were zero mentions of google tv during either of the keynotes. There were sessions but after sitting through a few it seemed as if all the new and exciting things were happening in other product lines. I don't mean this as a dig at the google tv devs. I just think the company has made a cooporate decision to lock this down.
Maybe I'll feel a little different after unboxing it tonight and playing with it some but I just can't see myself getting on board this product line and I'm a google fanboy. It just feels like a limitations by design concept.

That's cool. But inconsistent. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to even flash anything and I would be more apt to group those individuals with ones who would use the banana plugs on the back. It doesn't take an audiophile to desire more than 2 channels of sound.
I think its a brilliant device and ill probably get one once the price goes down. I just think it may increase sales to offer one without the amp - is it really that big of a selling point?

Agreed. This isn't like our Android phones running custom ROMs. You buy an Android phone, ANY Android phone, and you can:
1. Make phone calls
2. Send text messages
3. Use email
4. Browse the web
5. Download, install, and use the full Play Store catalog of apps
All without any hacking at all. When you install a custom rom, you're basically getting a few added features, customization, optimization, maybe the ability to overclock or run a select few apps that need root. You know, little things that aren't necessary but are nice to have.
The Nexus Q is different because it's gimped right out of the box. You basically can't do anything with it, other than play music and videos from the Play Store only (and who even has a huge collection of that stuff?). Even the very first Apple TV was capable of streaming content through a local network, even if it was limited to stuff you added to your iTunes library.
I appreciate Google reaching out to the dev community, but they can't rely on them to do all their work for them. What the Nexus Q should have been was a tiny Android desktop computer, controllable directly with an Android phone using a specific app (something like Gmote) and able to run any and all Android apps. I'm excited when I see thumb-sized Android computers available for under $100. The NQ could have been a cooler, more premium version of that, but as it is, it's both overpriced AND has no features.
YouTube app
So not living in US forces me to use Music and the YouTube app. Now it's time to do some raging.
Playing youtube vids on my tv is awesome through the app and all that. But I want to be able to play several videos. I have several playlists but the only option on a playlist in the youtube app is to delete it. Opening the playlists gives you the possibility to play one (and only one) video in a row. It really sucks. I don't want to open the app every time a video has ended :/
Guys what are you complaining about? Your where given cool toy for free because you are developers. You are suppose to find better applications for it . Just do it. Few years ago you had T-Mobile android phone without anything useful on it , nobody completed

All you guys in here complaining are just not dev or inspiring to be one cause from what I seen you're able to load a launcher to it from adb and stream netflix in 1080 so you guys dont really understand android or google yet but you will.
Sadly, I will buy a multitude of these for a project if someone can get the damn thing rooted and unlocked...

Nexus 10 over the Nexus 7?

Hello,
Simply as the title says, is the Nexus 10 worth it over the Nexus 7 besides the extra screen size (price not an issue)?
Thanks,
Crazysah
Yes
And the Nexus 7 will be getting a whole new model in 3 months. It will have a Snapdraon 600 processor, probably get an upgrade to 2GB of RAM like everything new does now days, and hopefully will also get a resolution bump. Once it gets this new model upgrade the choice between these two tablets might become harder.
My main reasons for liking the Nexus 10 more are:
- Rear-facing camera + flash
- Vibration
- Screen Resolution
- Specs
Imo, totally worth it The only downside that bothers me is portability, but meh.
The only thing that may concern me is how fast it runs while streaming and playing games and battery life on the Nexus 10.
Otherwise it looks to be the tablet for me definitely.
A real-world non-technical comparison:
My wife and daughter each have a Nexus 7, and they're both very envious of my Nexus 10 that I've had since last week.
They both like the bigger screen, and my wife commented that she likes the colours on my Nexus 10 better. Her Nexus 7 looks a bit washed-out when side-by-side with my Nexus 10. She also thinks it feels faster, but that's just her subjective view obviously.
As a Nexus 10 and 7 owner.. get the 10..
In my family we have two Nexus 10's and a Nexus 7. I was the one using the Nexus 7, with my wife having a Nexus 10 for months. I became envious of her Nexus 10 and got my own several days ago. My daughter uses the Nexus 7 and is in love with it. It's the perfect size for her. If i had to choose between them (and I just did), I'd get a Nexus 10 because of the screen. The Nexus 7's screen isn't bad necessarily but the 10's screen is really good. I love reading PDFs on it now, couldn't say that with the 7.
Scott
I personally think that they are too different to simply ponder which one should i get. To me they both have very different uses due to their form factor.
My N10 is absolutely fantastic, one of the best uses of my money in a long long time, but that said, due to it's size, it is either for home use or for when i'm on a coach or sat in the car for an hour waiting to pick someone up. The N7 would not satisfy me in these situations, but with a N7 or similar small tablet, it could feasibly slip in a pocket, be taken to the shop with me (i use my N10 a lot as a cookbook) or just generally out and about without having to consider lugging an 11" device around, i'm not the type to have a backpack or such, it's pockets or nothing.
as such, i love my N10, but am also considering selling an old computer that's not doing anything and using some of the money to buy a smaller device to complement my N10, just gotta decide which smaller device to consider. I do rather like the notion of a good stylus.
So yes, for me it's a question on usage, not which is better based on technical spec.
I think the 10 might just suit me better. Two questions:
1. How is the battery life?
2. How is streaming videos from a web browser?

Battery life seems to vary from user to user, 8-9 hours being normal it seems. Some seem to only get 4-5, not sure what they do with their tablet, while some using different roms are getting 10+ without an issue. I've never tested mine although i watched an HD copy of the avengers on a coach, using headphones, and wifi off, and i was at 76% battery life about 2 and a half hours later, so good enough for me I played a game the other day for the first time, Arcane Legends, and while i didn't play for very long, it seemed that my battery was dropping at an alarming rate, as in mere hours of play time before running out of juice.
As to streaming, hit and miss. As you know, there is no longer any proper flash support. I've found most sites do not work for me, however this might be fixable through a different browser but i have not tried as the youtube app is all i need, anything streamed will be done on my computer.
No Android device will officially support flash anymore, so both the Nexus 7 and 10 fall into the same category here as "hit and miss" with finding a stable web browser than has flash integrated into it.
Nexus 10 for me but nexus 7 is definetly easier to carry around. But that is not even a factor for me.
It's basically if you want to carry it with you all the time vs if you want to use it in more stationary way. Or have very weak hands that can't hold it for long.
Can someone check if firstrowsports.eu works? That's what I most care about. Check if you can view any matches.
Couldn't seem to watch anything using chrome browser just now.
Ah damn. Maybe I can use OnLive Desktop like I did for the iPad.

You don't need root to flash a custom ROM, nor do you need that particular ROM either.
You need at the very least, a custom recovery. TWRP and CWM are the only options in this regard. Next, you can either:
- Install AOSP's browser on stock ROM
- Install a custom ROM that has AOSP's browser
And there's plenty of custom ROM's that include AOSP's browser. Next, you'll need to grab the legitimate flash player from Adobe's archive site for ICS, install it, and bam, done. No idea what that flash hack is you mention...
That's just the Keywords I remember putting into Google and the flash thing was like the third page
Quick question before I go out and buy this tomorrow...
Can the Nexus 10 store and play video files? .avi? .mkv? Or music files? .mp3? .flac?

The Nexus 10 is a little limited. It handles MP4, and M4V fine but a no go on MKV. It'll play but jerky and stutters. It also has played some WMAs without issue. As for audio I am not sure, of course mp3 is fine and I think flac works as well

[Q] which tab's & cell will have best # of custom rom/dev options for my budget

What's up everyone @ xda... first of all i am new here.. my name is Ericka, wanted to say thanks for having me here & allowing me to post!
Ok so the reason for my post... i am looking to purchase a tablet & a new cellphone this week. I love to 'tinker' with things... always have, started with computers (windows) and got decent at developing windows desktop applications in visual studio, learned basic php, web design etc. Now i want to get a basic understanding of the inner-workings of tablets/cellphones running android... eventually start developing apps to go along with my websites i build online (social network type stuff) & eventually im hoping to actually get into custom rom development/feature hacks etc way down the line...if i end up having a knack for it
Alright...main question....if you had a fairly small budget (see paragraph below) and wanted to purchase both a tablet & a cellphone... for the sole purpose of "messing with them"... testing out lot's of different rom's.. figuring out how they work internally... testing out your own custom apps (i dont play mobile games at all...so dont factor that in the specs), and ill be using the tablet to login my pc from work with teamviewer etc. With all that said...which ones would you buy? Obviously I guess i am looking for the tablets and phones that have the most amount of "options" available.. easiest to take apart, find things, hack etc. as in (software/function wise). And preferrably the ones that have the most amount of "actual people/developers" working on them..involved with them... aka "fans of the phones/tablets". You know the ones that have active communities of people i can interact with... along my journey of non-desktop disovery...aka... figuring out this mobile/tablet/wifi/cellphone/android thaang
Oh ya, my budget...super weak... i can't spend more than like $200 or less per-device... i do have a cell contract with verizon (my samsung stratosphere just died, also it had 'hella-limited' dev support) so i might be able to 'upgrade' to a more expensive cellphone possibly....but the tablet i am probably going to have to pay for out-of-pocket. Hopefully my budget won't leave me out of the game entirely...i know that all the 'new devices' i see out there are like 500+ minimum.. Anyways I work 2 jobs.. no fam to help...im just trying to work with what i got. So thats why i signed up here first thing....I figured if i had any hope of being pointed in the right direction, it would probably happen here.. seems like a lot of intelligence combined into one lil place @ xda
#ericka #geek #lyfe
p.s. thanks for taking the time to read my post..im not gr8 at putting my thoughts into keyboards..sorry if it's confusing.. only like my 2nd forum post ever!

I was reading an article the other night @ work about the 'best developer phones/tabs' and it mentioned the nexus series of devices. There are just so many different models/types...wifi/3g/4g, wifi only, different cpu speeds, ram sizes etc. It's all very confusing to a mobile/tablet device #noob. When i research android stuff..every article gives a different opinion leading to yet another article.. all of which just seem to be advertisements for selling apps/new cellphones.. almost nothing seems to be 'user-generated' just people with agenda's. I can't afford to make a mistake and end up with a tab/cell that's anything other than "perfect" for me.. i only save enough $ for new hardware like once every 3 years...so i am just really trying hard and putting this time/effort into making sure i talk to people like you who really know what's up.
Anyways thanks for that suggestion! I just feel stupid...cuz im so good with windows/desktop computers...i got it "down"...i mean just built a #killa #box running a i7-3770k, liquid cooled, ssd's with raptor backups..16gb of DDR3, a R.A.T. mouse for precise graphic design, logitech backlit led flat keyboard.. smoothly running on my own custom windows 7 build/all non-essential services removed..all wrapped up in a stormtrooper looking stryker box. Visual studio and my own apps/services run like water flowing down from a waterfall...i just have like an instinct almost for desktop stuff. When it comes to this mobile/tab stuff.. its like im 15 again learning windows xp..starting over.. but i will figure it out...hopefully with a lil help from you guys!
Nothing can beat nexus devices, nothing comes close..
U can develop apps on anything but custom Roms , huge Dev support, it is nexus. abt various models , they are 3g / 4g, 16gb/ 32etc, now u choose the one that fits our need, these are not different models u see, everything else is same
If budget is less u can go for used nexus or older model

How easy is it to 'custom yourself' into some sense of anonymity with mobile devices. I.E. when the app your using says it gets full access to your phone #, contacts, txts/sms info etc. ...2 Change your gps location, show them a faux cellphone #..i.e. 1-800-ITS-NOT-1984, give them a list of "Grandmas Famous Cookies #1 " through #15 as your entire contact list. I know making myself have some semblance of privacy in the world of "google play" will be the very first things im going to sort out/figure out. Things like that (privacy apps etc.) are what fueled the interests of an entire generation windows developers ya know? If 10 years ago someone said that webpages would get access to your full name, phone #, all of your emails...access to your harddrive......it would have been the death of the internet/pc as we know it. Somehow people just decided recently that any time-killing game is worth handing their family history/life over for. IMO it's kinda pathetic... so those things are first on my list!

I would suggest you to buy a Nexus 7 2012 as a tablet as it's much much cheaper nowadays when the new version of Nexus 7 was released, but if you have a higher budget than that I would gladly suggest you to purchase the Nexus 7 2013 version.
For phone, I would also suggest a Nexus device, maybe the Nexus 4 as it has dropped alot in price due to the release of Nexus 5 but it's still a great and rapid device which runs very smooth and is really well optimized.
All of those devices are made for development in mind, and there is a huge variety of custom roms for those devices.
I hope that my advices helps you to chose a device which you will like!

I went to t-mobile yesterday afternoon after posting this..... first of all they are offering to pay off my contract @ verizon. Then they have the new Nexus 7 tablet (with the snapdragon 1500) & nexus 5 phones. After detailing the plan for (both) to me... it looks like $16/mo for each device per month (assuming my credit is good enough).
Overall $100 a month for unlimited service + the 2 devices... (assuming i paid for the mobile hotspot option) which im guessing i won't need since I'm going to root the nexus 5 and use something like opengarden etc. So without the mobile hotspot option [data] it might be about $80/mo total...does that seem like a good way to go...or should i really just look into purchasing the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 4 in cash?
Either way I'm glad i looked into this...my current bill monthly at verzion is $102...for 405 anytime minutes on a crappy samsung stratosphere, which is literally incapable of running instagram for more than 20 minutes...it got lagged out/and heated up to about 120 degrees, and started dropping it's 4g connection in that time 20min time frame.

That seem's like a good way to go, actually I would suggest you to go that way as those phones and tablets are wayy better than the ones I suggested you. But they are bit more expensive, that's the only downpart which I can find.
So I would suggest you to grab that deal

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...I ended up taking your advice.
Went today & picked up my nexus 5.... the nexus 7 (2013) wasn't "in-stock"...supposedly I'll have it in 4-6 days though.
Omg..the difference between my old stratosphere & this nex-5 are like...1990's nintendo to 2013 PS4. In for quite a shock though when I went to install instagram/twitter, took a detailed look at the "rights" I would be giving up...laughed my butt off..then clicked each one to read each part in its entirety.. I can't believe people are willing to grant app's access which would essentially make their "tiny computer" with 3-6ghz of processing power & 10mbps average connection become 100% remote controllable by an app developer!! The only applications made for windows that gather this much information + can turn on your webcam without notification + can intercept your raw communications + create raw sockets (and run custom network protocols)...would be black market trojan's which are encrypting their data with custom protocols...the types used by script kiddies you read about in google tech news. I'm sure you guys are all used to this by now...but you can just imagine my lil geeky jaw dropping when I realized the full scope of the corporate information grab taking place right now in the mobile market. It's like my geek ex-boyfriend once told me..."If it's possible and not technically illegal.. you better believe every company that matters is already doing it"
So my first step will be figuring out how to get a custom rom on this phone... selectively choose what information/or b.s. information I'll be providing any app's I pick to take a look at. Any suggestions on where to get started? I would really love to learn mobile technology (android o.s.) from the ground up...the same way i learned how to use a p.c... in such a way that i have the "most" amount of control of my system as possible
ok got it rooted....now how do i go about modifying what apps see (not blocking, but providing b.s. info)
p.s. the captchas on this site are ridiculous.... most spammers hire humans to type in captchas now....so all its doing is making our life harder, its not stopping anyone from spamming forums

Yes it can... i did some research on it. I'm lucky enough to have gotten Android 4.4 KitKat (KRT16M) so App Ops is enabled on my phone. Thank god I didn't upgrade to the latest 4.4.2 etc. Because apparently in that operating system... App Ops is no longer enabled.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm on my way to learning all this great/cool stuff!

What do you use your N9 for?

Greetings everyone,
The first two weeks with my Nexus 9, I used to play with it every now and then. Mostly watching videos and taking few notes. The only big thing I can think of doing on my tablet is reading ebooks.
For the past month or more, I have barely used it. Reason being that pretty much everything the tablet can do, our smartphones can do.
Maybe I am wrong to think that a Windows tablet would have been a better choice - so, I would like to hear what you guys use your Nexus 9 to if you already have a decent smartphone?
Looking forward to a good discussion

I use mine as a replacement for my 7 year old desktop. I put the desktop in storage in the basement. The only time I use the desktop is to use fastboot. I also have the Microsoft apps on the n9. I use it in meetings, for spreadsheets and PowerPoints. At home I use mostly for cruising the web. If I didnt need fasrboot for the n9 and my n5 Id ditch all other computers for good, as I no longer play pc games.
book reading, comic reading, music playing, work out tracker... occasionally use it for videos as i have other tablets and laptops that have bigger screens. i got it as a replacement for my galaxy note 8 - which is a damn good device, i just had an upgrade itch going on that wouldn't go away
i've had 3 wintabs, samsung 500t and 700t and currently still have my transformer t100. the battery life is freaking awesome on the t100 - about 11hrs of actual screen on use. only drawback is that no decent browser is very suitable for touch. chrome was the closest, but when they removed stackable tabs it worsened the experience. ie is great for touch... but it's still ie, lol.
Mainly i use it for Clash of Clans and other games, but also for web browsing, YouTube and Streaming (no local media as the 11GB free storage is ridicolous) and thats about it. I sometimes use my laptop (13") to watch movies and TV-shows but in bed i find the tablet more enjoyable for that)
For things that a phone and a laptop can't do

Hmm, when I have both my tablet and phone beside me, I will never pick up my phone. I mean, why would you prefer to read anything on your phone rather than your tablet?
i sold my chromebook and nexus 4. bought a nokia 515 (feature phone) and the nexus 9.
mostly leave the tablet at the house.
i use it for:
comic books (device is perfect for this!)
games (boombeach, madden, etc)
nba league pass
carbon poker
I use it to do my internet surfing at home. Its much more convienient than messing with my laptop just to quickly check something out. Right now I'm at work using my nexus 5 as a hotspot to surf the net on my nexus 9 (don't tell the boss ). I can't stand a lot of the mobile-optimized sites, so unless I am only with my phone, I use the tablet to view the desktop versions. I also play games and keep notes. I also use it for my music playing needs a lot of the time. I use Chordbot Pro to write music on it. That would be difficult on a phone screen.
I use mine to move questions to the Q&A section all day. ?
Just razing you..... But I will move it. ?
BTW.... My N7 is getting rusty. I think I'll be getting an N9. Not impressed with Samsung. My daughters Tab 3 is terrible. ?

It's a good device Darth. I'm a little disappointed with its lack of popularity and support. But I enjoy the device a lot. I use mine mostly for browsing, xda mostly, and use it for work where I use it while traveling so I don't have to lug a laptop around.

Thanks jd! ?
Your endorsement is enough for me!
Just gotta talk the wife into it. ?
So I actually use my for working out when I am following a program. I am currently doing Body Beast (no laughing) and ripped the videos onto my Nexus 9. That and my Jaybird Blue Budz and I have my own little private training session .

Lol, yeah, just what you need, another device to keep you busy on xda My wife is still trying to come to terms with my hobby here. I'm tech savvy and she's not. It's an alien world to most "normal" people. But I love it! Love learning new things and helping others.

Is it good for gaming like modern combat and streaming movies? Or does it get sluggish

I'd love to see a distribution of the ages of posters, in general, but particularly on this thread!! Just a quartile say, by 10 year segments. I'm in the >70; my use is primarily listening to the radio at night (poor sleeper) and mail. I find it handy for checking facts while listening/watching/reading.
