Possibility of upgrade to Android 6.0? (Venue 8 7000) - Dell Venue

I didn't find any news around talking about Dell's Android 6.0 upgrade plan.
Any source about venue 8 7840?
Dell was doing great with 4.4KK -> 5.0LP -> 5.1, hope they will trigger the next push. Though I think current 5.1 is great enough in terms of battery/performance/stability

I think we as owners of the Venue 8 7000 first have to make our voices heard for Dell to even consider an update to Marshmallow. I contacted support about it recently, and the rep stated that he had no information regarding this update. Hopefully Dell does decide to update, else I will be selling this tablet.

I'd guess by April it will have it.

Send a support email. That'll be the best way to get info as well as let Dell know, we want it. Otherwise they'll just release a new product and forget about us.

The Dell Support Chat has confirmed that an update is in the pipe, apparently we just have to wait and see.

I sent Dell a message about this on Saturday, Jan 9th but never got a response. I saw a root method for it online but it was one of the ones you had to go through all types of hoops and strings to get the links.

Just curious, is there no development for this tablet because it isn't popular enough? The bootloader is unlocked, right?

yes, bootloader can be unlocked. But Dell is trying it's best to keep this tablet a secret, so nearly no dev knows about it.
Only hope is that development for intel based tablets in general get more attention in the future...

I have it on good authority that Dell is planning on cancelling sales of this device. (Heard from a Dell rep at my workplace.)
This combined with Intel cancelling all atom development doesn't leave me with much hope for an official ROM from Dell.

yes, that's a downer. Such pretty hardware, awesome screen, decent sound. This thing could have been a real hit. But since the software part sucks that hard, i sold mine a few weeks ago and got a Huawei Mediapad.

It is official now: dell shuts down entire Android tablet business and no longer offer any OS updates for any of its Android tablets.

Yea, I had a Venue 10 7040 that crapped out on me after 6.5 months. Dell has it now, and they do not have any more 32gb versions in stock to replace mine. They have told me that they are no longer producing tablets at all.

What is their remedy for your hardware failure? I certainly hope they aren't trying to get away with "Sorry, we're out of that product. So we will take yours but not replace it.". My Venue 7840 just this past week stopped charging. It's clearly a faulty charging port but I'm having a difficult time getting Dell to honor the warranty the device is still under.

android on playbook

Hi all
Searching but cannot locate an answer.
Can the blackberry Playbook be rooted and a Android with recovery be installed? .
Thanks
Heeter
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
The Playbook has been rooted and Dingleberry was just released this afternoon. Shouldn't be long until we have an Android port.
TekMason
Awesome,
Thanks for the update.
Looks like I am going out to pick one up then.
Was only going to get one if I can get Android put in.
Thanks
Heeter
so will there be any port for playbook?
I can get hold of a Playbook in great condition for cheap, so im hoping to hell and back that I can put a fully functional Android on it within the next months!

Swapped the Playbook for a galaxy tab 7.7, its like night and day.
I was thinking of possibly getting the Playbook. What do you suggest? The price dropped recently and the difference between the Playbook and anything close to its hardware is steep. But is it worth it?
playbook
Hiya, just wondering if an android rom has been released yet?
any news?
I don't think you are going to see this go anywhere. Considering you can buy real Android tablets with similar specs for similar price, this is dead in the water.
The Playbook itself is just about dead in the water.
Given the recent RIM news, I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar fire sale on Playbooks as we did with the HP Touchpad. Honestly, something like this at the right price if it could run Android would be great for kids. Been looking for something for my 6 and 8 year old without breaking the bank that they can play around with during vacation road trips, etc.
Hopefully soon there will be a full port of ICS on the playbook
It is rather unlikely there will ever be a full Android port for the PB. Or possibly even another root. RIM are of course known for their secure devices. It isn't likely someone will crack the bootloader on the device to allow installing a different OS. Even rooting the current OS has become rather difficult now (to the point no one can manage it). Now almost all processes on the PB run as regular user, rather than root. The only one that's root is the web server, which only has something like 6 functions, none of them exploitable. It is renowned as the industry's most secure web server, hence it's use by RIM, seeing as security is one of their primary concerns.

given that RIM has provided next to no information about how the device itself has been locked down beyond belief (improbable to breach bootloader security to flash CWM then flash rom) I doubt that there will be any luck with this working, I'll get in contact with RIM on monday and discuss unlocking the bootloader as well as the possibility to get source for PBOS2 (doubt it though as they will probably want me to sign legal wavers and agreements against using the code to "alter their product in such a way that it could be used to damage or modify the device")
I also hope PB can run Android OS...
Although there are a lot of tablet in Market, but I still like PB....

im interested in a way around it too. similar thing happened on epic 4g touch. unlocking the bootloader caused a counter to be set off and an ugly triangled appeared in the boot splash (proving unlocker was used). but after a while, they figured out how to do it without the phone recording it was unlocked. i want this for the prime, in case i ever have to send it in

@strechwookie - since they are using only a few SBKs for all Transformers I think the SBKs will soon be read from the tool so you can unlock without it.
Could be like the Atrix too, when unlocking it's bootloader you permantly burn a fuse... so while you may be able to "hide" the unlock on the boot screen by returning to stock, a savvy RMA tech could still tell if you had originally unlocked the bootloader.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix 4G
I rather think they are going the HTC way. This tool won't be some kind of *.exe you'll download but a webinterface.
You enter your serialnumber and it generates an unlock code based on the serial number.
This was ASUS will always know if you used their tool or not.
The only chance for us getting away with warranty is to write some kind of keygen which does the same as ASUS' tool.
If they are doing it right this won't be possible.
Of course someone could always try to hack the bootloader AlphaRevX style, but i guess not many would be brave & experienced enough to try that.
normally, and with every other device i have owned i have not hesitated to unlock bootloader and void warranty as i have been confident in its build quality, but with this, not so sure. I have already returned one for the reboot issue, an the current one i have has some kind of screen touch issue where when i touch the screen it creates a sort of watery thing under where i touch- only in one particular area of the screen, and there is a part under that which is too white... hard to explain , but long story longer, i dont trust Asus' build quality to void my warranty totally.
I still believe it should be like the nexus'- why should rooting automatically void ALL warranty? If they stuff up the screen, battery, chip etc how would me running a custom rom affect that (assuming it hasnt- eg. OC to extremes etc)...
so i will be RMAing my prime before unlocking and then i will think about it long and hard and hope for someone to come up with an unofficial way to unlock... plus Asus will probably screw us over like HTC did with their pseudo unlock...

Yes GSMarena is pretty reliable. A lot of sites are reporting this (PC World and DigiTimes) are two.
It seems that JellyBean will be a tablet update from HoneyComb
here's a quote
"Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will come in two flavors: Google and Microsoft. The article said that brand vendors "can either choose to adopt only Android 5.0 or add Android 5.0 to Windows 8 devices with the ability to switch between the two OSes without the need to shut down the computer."
One the most exciting aspects of Windows 8 is its flexibility--that you can jump from tablet to smartphone to game console and back. Adding Google products to the mix makes Microsoft's upcoming revamp of Windows even more insanely thrilling, and may be the very bullet to shatter my iPhone once and for all."
Maybe google got tired of all the Apple lawsuits and decided to drop the big hammer.
edit: Thanks nikhiltanwar for the heads up

Find someone who can reverse engineer and write drivers for the Streak and you can have ICS. That's the only way ICS is happening, unless Olleh produces an ICS ROM for their Streaks.

I don't mean to spam this forum, I just really wonder myself how difficult people porting the driver into streak 5. I'm newbie here, I'm observe everywhere include the rumor that DJ_STEVE has run out of budget to pay the server. my question is why Dell itself do do anything to help satisfying the costumer..I Love Dell but now Dell don't do anything at all to help
Dell will not help, because to Dell its Android line was a failure. Besides, they did no worse in firmware updates than any other device manufacturer. They promised an update to Froyo and delivered. The fact we even got Gingerbread is all due to Olleh KT providing an updated ROM for their Streaks. That was not Dell's doing. The simple fact here is the Streak is two years old, thus ancient technology, and has long since been discontinued by Dell. Thus any expectation of firmware updates from Dell is unrealistic, which leads back to my initial post in this thread regarding drivers.
P.S. Just to make things clear, I know you were not spamming the forum. In reality nobody was, however hcaz301's posts were rather redundant, even resurrecting dead threads to post inaccurate statements. Thus my comment, which was directed at him.

As someone who browses the forums for advice i find your reply to a request for information not only insulting to the person asking but seriously you need an attitude adjustment. Where in the world do you think you are so superior to answer like this, if anything you do not deserve the right to post on this site and i registered just to tell you this. Never seen such a stupid comment by an obviously full of himself idiot.
And yes you can remove this comment and carry on being what you are but believe me you know nothing about life and should be prepared for a life of hurt if you continue being such a fool.
You were the noob previously and i am sure some of your comments would have had people laughing at your ignorance, but seriously get a life and stop being such a douchebag
I guess I attract the trolls. Must be because I work for some, but that's another story.
I can only guess that you created your account specifically to respond to this one post by me, and then you will simply evaporate into nothingness again. Let me give you a piece of advice: stop wasting both your time and mine and actually do something constructive with your life. You may or may not understand this, but I neither have to justify nor prove myself to you or anyone else for that matter. What you see here is what you get, and quite bluntly, I don't give a f*** if you like it or not.

Not shockingly, there are "instructions" of how to install the update, except the "instructions" don't actually tell you how to do it! What crap. To prove my point, here are their "instructions" for the last firmware update. It looks like the steps to install the update stop after telling you how to check your current version. Thanks, Asus!
Steps of Update:
1. Check SW version of your Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201*
2. Download Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 Firmware: V9.4.2.28 Only for WW SKU and Update version of SOP (From “Manual” Item)
※Firmware update cannot do *SKU conversion* and downgrade version.
Wrong SKU may cause update failure, You can only update your SW version on the Same SKU
*How to check SW version of your Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201?
Path: [Settings]-->[About tablet]-->Build number
Example: You should be able to see the build number WW_epad-9.X.X.X_2012xxxx, where “WW” means SKU.

Some people had been suffering for 10 months because a POS company ASUS can't make a product right. THey charge us 500 dollars for the crappiest product in the history of electronics. Now they can't even make a right OTA? I would love to see a company like this go out of business. There should be class action lawsuit against asus. I really hope asus goes bankrupt and saves future customers from this misery.

Or over $650 for the 64 GB model after tax and shipping. Asus is total garbage. I absolutely hate them and wholeheartedly agree that I hope they go bankrupt.

The OTA has been rolling out for all of 12 hrs at best. They are required to release SOURCE CODE not an update file. I had the update failed to download message and it has since downloaded. As it turns out a lot of people were trying to download at the same time. Weird I know.

From Wikipedia " Asus - world's fifth-largest PC vendor by 2011 unit sales" so do you reckon they're going to go bankrupt because they shafted us by selling a defective product?? Somehow I doubt it

Or maybe, just to put a sinister take on things, they are going to use peoples OTA experiences as guinea pigs to see if they've got it right this time, unlike previous versions they have put on their site that don't work properly LOL :fingers-crossed:

Yea, paid 500 dollars to be a guinea pig for ASUS. This is exactly what I signed up for. Thanks asus, suck my balls
Guys, I had trouble with this too, even after a hard reset and temp unrooting. This worked for me!!!

For all having the failed attempt at OTA update this is what I did to fix it.
I did 1 hard reset (Turn off prime, remove charger, hold down volume key and then power on to do a cold/hard reset, followed by going to application manager and clearing cache for "DMClien" and then I checked for update and it downloaded successfully.
It worked for me.

OP can you update your post please?
edit: oh no, it only downloaded! got the red andy
edit 2: Did some digging. You can find the file "last_log" in /cache/recovery and it can give you an idea of what went wrong. In my install, it aborted because keyboard.apk was modified (keyboard multi-browser mod in dev section). just restored this, will see if i can force the update again.
...
was able to force the update again by copying dlpkgfile and the echo command. it's updating now
...
3 hours after my first try and I'm finally on Jelly bean!!!
For those who rooted but did not unlock who have update issues, check out my message here:

Through no one's fault, this doesn't help until there's access to the dlpkgfile

The dlpkgfile is posted by another user in that thread. I downloaded it and followed the method posted. All went perfectly.
Why do the users have to go through so much trouble just to get an OTA to work? Why? Asus, I hope you burn in hell. The schittiest company to have existed on planet. Can they not do one thing right? I mean so much trouble and hacking just to get an OTA to work? F U asus. All the engineers involved in Prime and this project should be stoned to death.
