I'm trying to make a one-connection, more or less universal, high quality audio and charger set up for my truck. Since the DAC is USB powered i'm not sure where the power would come from in this case. The phone or that adapter. I just like the simplicity of this unit for what i am doing (it's all going in my dash).
EDIT: I took the plunge and ordered a bunch of bits that SHOULD work (a UCA202 was cheaper, so ordered it). I'll take pics and document the setup and installation, post it all when its ready. It'll take a few weeks for the stuff to get here.
What are you trying to do? Give yourself an entertainment centre in your truck?
What I have done in my truck is use a Bluetooth stereo for streaming all audio from my HTC. If I were to install one HDMI screen I could have HD TV.
For charging, I just use a USB adapter in the cigarette lighter. Make sure you get one capable of outputting 1A or more, and also fools the phone into thinking it's connected to the mains.
When at a festival the other year, I used the tailgate as a makeshift bar, and the phone was streaming music over Bluetooth. I also had the stereo remote to control the volume, and used the air conditioning to chill some drinks. Although, will use a mini fridge next time as I used a shed loads of Diesel
I have a pioneer head ( http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/CD-Receivers/FH-P8000BT ) and an iBolt cradle. What I was hoping for was to use USB to provide power and use a DAC to get better sound quality from the tunes that I get over bluetooth. This deck also has an auxiliary in on the back, but trying to avoid using the amped headphone out. I went with this deck because of the connection options and didn't care about touch screens. That's what my HOX+ or Nexus 7 are for. So having a single USB connection for everything would be great. Pretty much the only thing that iFail devices have on us.

Here is my start. I didn't get the DAC yet, and I need to wait for USB OTG with Charging before I can, but the set up is ready for it!
Sure looks good, but I'm unsure how the sound quality will be, I'm not sure how the DAC works by accessing the USB.. Does it just see it as a USB storage device? If you're playing MP3's anyway, why not just stream over Bluetooth. Once the track is digital, Idon't think that you would want to convert to analogue unless it's playing it directly.
Are your MP3's a decent bit-rate? I have never had an issue with MP3's over Bluetooth. I normally download weekly music podcasts and stream those.
I'm gonna chime in hear and say just bought the pioneer Afh x5500, and although my EVO LTE streams spotify and stock music player over Bluetooth, it does not send track info whatsoever. My note 2 did but, I prefer the EVO. So, I'm waiting for the 8500 to come in now because it has hdmi input onboard so it should be able to take hdmi to mhl and then perform correctly. As well as apradio functions. Anyone have any experience with this? Or, does anyone know how to get Bluetooth to stream song/album info to the head unit?

One of the #1 reasons I got the HOX+ was the 64GB storage for my FLAC collection. Originally this concept I started while I had the Galaxy S3, which with a kernel and CM 10 can enable the DAC output while allowing the device to still recieve the charge.
That said, the deck you mentioned with HDMI might just do the trick too. And it really would be universal. Hmm.... I like this deck (It was old when I got it) because I don't really care for touch/dvd in my dash. This has a big rotary control knob, and I even have the lights turn off at night so I just control everything from the phone (except Volume). But i'll look into the one you suggest.
Anyway. This set up will do the trick for now. I hard wired the charger and AUX into the stereo harness so it looks clean and stock. I doubt I'll really tell much of difference anyway without the DAC at this point. I'm not getting any line noise like I thought I might.
Well, ill write back after I get the new deck. I'm really hoping for all functions or ill have to figure something else out...

I have recently ordered the new JVC KW-V50BT multimedia receiver.
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S3. I bought this JVC receiver because it supports MHL/HDMI which allows you to control the phone fullscreen. Video goes via HDMI or MHL2.0 (the latter the S3 doesn't support to my knowledge). Audio goes via Bluetooth pairing.
I picked up the EPL-3FHUBEGSTD adapter for the S3 and put a separate micro usb charger in the car to connect it to. HDMI from the adapter will go to the HDMI in on the radio, which I believe should work. If I ever upgrade the phone to an MHL2 compatible one I should be able to go without the adapter completely using an HDMI to MHL adapter JVC sell for this unit.
If all of the above works correctly I should be able to run Sygic navigation on the S3 with instructions both on the 7" screen and via the car speakers via bluetooth, using A2DP. I plan on filling a USB stick with music files, and connecting that to the USB in on the radio, which I'm sure will work fine.
I am just wondering if there is a way to improve upon the audio output from the phone so streaming from the phone like from Qobuz can be done as well.
I guess bluetooth will work for this also, but is it technically possible to get a better sound quality, like using an external DAC?
I read some DIY threads on using the micro usb port.
Could I in theory do that, but still split things so HDMI keeps going to the head unit? Or will using the micro USB out for audio like this kill off the HDMI output? Any other suggestions?

I'm in the Netherlands, mine is also still on pre-order. It was listed as available/in stock at an online store, after which I went to a local dealer to ask whether they could supply it also (as I also wanted them to install it for me).
They contacted JVC Netherlands who denied the shop could have it in stock already because it hadn't been released yet.
JVC said it would be an early April release, and they promised one of the first units to go to my dealer. The smaller model (30BT) is already available, the 50BT should be there the first or second week of April.
In the meantime I've answered my own question; I assumed Bluetooth would be used for audio as is the case with some previous models with Mirrorlink.
This is however not the case as audio simply goes via MHL/HDMI. Since that doesn't degrade audio I'm confident this will work perfectly for me.

I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with the FIIO Q1 DAC. My Z2 does not recognize the DAC connect via my OTG cable. If I reboot the device and start playing music and then plug the device in. Only then may the DAC be recognized. But its more miss than hit.
Should I unplug the DAC and try connect it again it will not connect until I reboot the device and try again. Was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and if there is a fix.
This issue persists on 5.0.2 -> 6.0.1

I once was at a huge meetup with a bunch of audiophiles and tried the FiiO Q1 for myself. (Great DAC/Amp btw). Anyways, it works flawlessly on my Z2. (on eXistenZ 6.0.1). Only guess is to try and factory reset? I mean it worked even if I played music then plugged it in, or plug it in first then play music.

Thanks for the response. I have tried all that except for custom roms. I have a couple of different OTG cables on order.... I am hoping that I may just have a crappy cable.
Hi all,
I bought the Hidizs Sonata HD USB-C to Jack 3.5mm headphone adapter with integrated DAC.
When I connect the dongle to my Galaxy S20 (Exynos CPU) USB-C port, the device is not detected and audio output goes to phone speakers.
The strange thing is that if I connect in this mode: SONATA HD USB-C PORT to USB-C to USB-A adapter to USB-A to USB-C OTG adapter, the device is recognized by phone and works good.
It seems that the phone detects the device only if OTG (and then usb host mode) forced by hardware adapter (SAMSUNG OTG ADAPTER).
Do you think it is a problem with the S20?

I have the same adapter, and works for me without problems. My phone is S20 ultra 5g european version. The installed Hidizs firmware version is audio priority, software for playing music is poweramp.

thank you serafko! I just tried on my friend phone (Samsung Galaxy S8) and the adapter works (some disconnections but works).
I have the audio priority firmware also.
I think there are some settings on my s20 that blocks the activation of the usb host mode

Activate Developer options>default USB configuration and see if mucking with the USB settings perk it up.
The S20 may not be supported by it,same issues on the 10+ with some dongles.
It must have a built in DAC chipset if the S20 doesn't provide one. I'm not sure if it does or doesn't.*
If others say it works on the S20, it should otherwise get one that's known to be compatible.

I tried to change default usb configuration in developer mode but not solved. Tried all options.
The Sonata HD has an integrate Hi-Res DAC.
In addition, after about 70 connect/disconnect attempts, my s20 detects the DAC, works for 1-2 min and then stop working. After that, the phone has not detected the DAC anymore.
The strange thing is that if I connect the DAC via an OTG adapter, all works good without any issues.
I tried "USB Host Diagnostics" App, but no device is detected.
Furthermore I enabled USB debug to view the logcat via ADB. When I connect the device on USB-C port I can see a "BATTERY CHANGED" event on the USBProvider module, but android not detects any device connected on USB-C port.
If I connect the same DAC on a s10 (with same android and EMUI version of my S20) or on a s8, device is detected and works, so I think that isn't a defective device. It seems that Android not activate USB OTG mode when device is connected on the USB-C port.
@serafko has my same phone and the same device (with the same firmware version) and he has no problems. This makes me think that more than a compatibility problem with the S20 is some Android setting that causes the problem.

Settings>sound and vibrations>advanced sound settings>sound quality and effects
Is the UHQ upscaler enabled when you connect the device?
Could power management be killing the apk(s) needed?
Power management (other than the power setting, Optimize is best) causes nothing but trouble.
Developer options>stand by apps, all app buckets should show as active, if not power management is active and probably running amuck, as usual.

The UHQ upscaler is disabled (greyed out) with both the connected and unconnected device.
In the Stand by apps I have some apps greyed out with different states (RARE, FREQUENT ,EXEMPTED, etc).
Do you think this could be the problem?
In this case how can I solve?
I have currently enabled "Optimize" in power management.

EDIT: I just disabled the "Risparmio energia applicazione" (I think Energy saving app in english) and now all the apps in the Developer options -> stand by apps are in the "ACTIVE" state....same issue! Device not detected and UHQ upscaler greyed out.
EDIT2: Also tried to enable the developer option "Disable automatic audio routing": same issue!
I think this is doable but you're going to have to play with it. Contact the manufacturer if all else fails.

I contacted technical support but they replied after 4 days with a classic standard email.
Also I tried to flash all 3 firmware (now the device is with "D - Pure Music" firmware, the same as the other user.
Finally I did all the tests both with the app they recommend (HybyMusic) and with USB Audio Player PRO, setting the BitPerfect option and exclusive access to the USB port. This way the app bypasses the android usb stack and uses an optimized driver.
I also tried to clear the data and cache of the system application "Usb settings", but despite all these attempts I could not solve it in any way.
At this point, considering that the manufacturer's assistance is practically non-existent, I believe that I will return the product directly through Amazon.
I am very sorry because the DAC quality of this device is amazing and I do not know if I should order another one as I honestly have not yet understood if it is a defective product or compatibility problem.

I have the Samsung dongle too and works like a charm with all apps (Spotify, PowerAmp, etc).
I'm considering to buy an bluetooth DAC like the Fiio BTR5. It works both as Bluetooth or USB-C DAC, so I would be sure not to have compatibility problems.

You mean you want to transmit the audio in the bt realm with the BTR5?
Even using the LDAC or AptX-HD codec the resolution and quality will be inferior to the Samsung dongle DAC to 3.5mm audio output.
BT lacks the bandwidth to support 24 bit 96khz resolution.
If the device you're coupling by bt doesn't support AptX-HD it won't do anything the phone bt chipset can't do*.
I believe that phone support the Sony LDAC bt codec, unfortunately only Sony headphones use it.
If you want to use bt headphones with the best easily available HQ audio I go with Sony.

I am sorry, that i missinform you. My Sonata firmware is not "audio priority", but is "pure audio (D)". When i plugin DAC into USB port, Poweramp start automaticaly.

The Fiio BTR5 supports all Bt codecs, LDAC included. In Bt mode supports up to 96Khz 24bit but in USB mode supports up to 384khz with DSD256 native. The dongle has 2x ES9218P DAC by Sabre.

The samsung dongle actually has very high quality, in fact I was surprised, but it has a hard time driving my 150Ohm Shure headphones. No problem with my Bose QC20 instead.

Just tried the Sonata 2 on S10+ and I'll let a fried try on S20 soon.
This product looks like useless and malfunctioning.
Talking about S10, it integrates a great DAC, it's just heavily limited by software, I don't want to know why...
I rooted it and, modding the mixer_gains.xml, installing Viper4Android and using dynamic driver based headphones it's absolutely unbelievable.
Anyway, Google just improved SafetyNet, they'll soon close the door to any root solution, Magisk included, in a short time we'll have the most of apps refusing to run on rooted phones.
That's why I'm searching for a decent type-c DAC cable.
Coming to the Sonata 2, its volume is just acceptable, but bass frequencies are too weak.
Moreover, its connector is unstable, there's frequent disconnections
Also the game of the 3 firmwares is absurd.
I flashed the sound priority firmware, honestly this firmware increases sound quality a little bit, but it shockingly fails to manage the microphone: on outgoing and incoming calls microphone doesn't work at all.
Finally, reverting to call priority firmware, the microphone still doesn't work.
In my opinion this product looks like the usual chinese bull****, do you confirm?
I'm actually looking to something better, but it prefer it in the "cable" form, using it for work and sport a big device wouldn't be so comfortable...

I recently picked up a pixel 6, very happy with it so far except for the fact that my car is too old for the bluetooth to carry music to the radio.
I was wondering if anybody has managed to find a type c to 3.5mm cable that works? I have tried a type c to 3.5mm adaptor and it doesn't work, I think I need a straight type c to 3.5mm cable instead of an adaptor?
Before anybody asks, I have an fm transmiter but not really enjoying the experience between static or the bluetooth getting confused with the car itself.
I don't see why a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter shouldn't work. Try finding one on amazon that specifically advertises use in cars. It could be possible that the one you have is incompatible, manufacturers tend to make adapters that only work in specific circumstances.
You need an active adapter with integrated DAC (digital to analogue converter). Passive ones will not work. You better get the google cable if available. Apple one works but is too quiet in android. In fact any active cable should work.

I have this issue since using the Galaxy S21, the way I fixed it, start playing music on the phone speaker, then connect the cable, and it will start working, it happens all the time, that why I bought a cheap Bluetooth receiver from Walmart, best $8 I've spent in years.

You need an active adapter with integrated DAC (digital to analogue converter). Passive ones will not work. You better get the google cable if available. Apple one works but is too quiet in android. In fact any active cable should work.

Just to clear up what that actually means for OP: a passive adapter will work only on USB-C ports that are able to route an *analog* signal. These are fairly uncommon -- most USB-C ports are digital only.
The nice thing about digital output is that you get to control the sound quality by selecting a USB-DAC of a quality that meets your needs, instead of being limited to whatever cheap thing they built in to the phone.
Physically, you can't even tell the difference any more. While USB-DAC's used to always involve a "big ugly box", the circuitry has shrunk these days to small enough to fit into the ends of the dongle.
The headphone adapter sold by Google is an example of this, its a USB-DAC, but shows no sign of containing any significant components besides the connectors.
I tried one that came with an old Motorola phone and it did not work, but Google sells one. They should be able to confirm if it works before you order it

I've personally tried 3 different ones that have worked for me, the first one was from an old Motorola phone, the second one, was one that I bought at an airport, I believe the brand is Moshi, and the third one was coming from a one plus phone. They all worked by playing on phone speaker and then plugging it.

Which Moto phone? My Moto Z(2) Force one gives an error message that the audio device is not supported.

It is the moto Z2 Force, I've used it a couple times, and I had no issues.

This discussion is very interesting. Generally pixel 6 (and previous pixels also) do not send analogue audio signal to the usb type c port hence passive converters from type c to 3.5 mm do not work. You need active converter with integrated DAC (digital to analogue converter) in it so that the digital audio from the usb type c port is transformed to analogue signal and sent to the headphones or whatever else. Every phone though has integrated DAC in the chipset because otherwise it would not be able to drive its own speakers with analogue signal. When i tried to connect my passive DAC adapter from oneplus 7 phone i got error on the pixel 6 that cable is not compatible. It is possible if you play something through the speakers analogue signal to also be copied towards the usb type c port and this way to trick passive adapters to also work but this need to be tested. I think that i still have the passive adapter somewhere and will test these days if i find it.

I tried an adapter from a Oneplus 6 (if memory serves) and I had the same problem, hence the thread
Given the one from Google looks just the same I am apprehensive to buy it until I am 100% certain
Today DAC circuits are so small that it is easy to integrate these into the usb type c part of the cable. There is no way to tell if cable is active or passive only by looking at it anymore. Google cable should work fine. Alternatively you can try the trick with first playing through the speakers and then connecting the old oneplus 6 cable and see if that will make it work. ne side note - don't buy the apple usb to 3.5 mm cable. It has very low volume on android (works properly on ios and windows). Tested it myself.

It would need to be physically wired together like that, which it is definitely not.
It would probably also need a second DAC built in, because there are only so many speakers you can drive with the built-in. That's why some phones are advertised as "dual DAC".
Got Pixel 6 usb-c to 3.5 mm one direct from Google...works great.
