ROM suggestion - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone. First off all, I would like to say thank you to all the devs who are doing such a great job in making various roms and giving us the opportunity to experience a vast android world. Now, I know that many of the noob users like me are really confused about installing a custom rom. There are a number of good roms for kenzo now. I'm creating this thread to help me choose the best custom rom to install, as well as for all the users.
So, if you are a dev or an experienced users, please suggest me from the following list. Please provide the authentic feature of your chosen rom, or at-least describe why you have chosen it. Also, please provide known major bug list for the latest build of that rom [Like fingerprint error, FM error, FC, random reboot, xposed unavailability etc] . Don't forget to mention if the rom has OTA support.
List of roms-
1. Unofficial CM13 latest build
2. Unofficial Resurrection Remix latest build
3. Official Resurrection Remix latest build
Really looking forward to your reply.
4. MIUI 7.3.9.0 SE port for Kenzo
How to reply to this thread ---
1. Suggest a rom from above list.
2. Give 2 reasons why this rom is the best
3. Describe major known bugs , plus the bugs you have encountered .

Cm13 by thestrix. This rom is not on xda but the thread started by banmeifyouwant refers to this. This is build from official cm13 sources, and is most likely going to recieve ota in near feature. There are no major bugs, only some minor which will not hinder daily use.
Resurextion remix is based on cm13 with more customization options, so unless the parent tree is bug free, resurection remix will not be. Check if the rr version is following the official cm tree or some other. If it is following official cm tree, then it is good else the bugs will be more. Personally i prefer cm over rr. You can always use xposed modules to enjoy extra features.
Miui 7.3.9 se, if you want to use miui go for miui8. Other than that i dont know. People usualy flash rom because they dont want to use the stock rom. Cm is way more better than miui or rr.
But these are my opinion, flash what you like. Android is open source, anybody can have what they wish.

Miui 7.3.9
Reasons
1.Really smooth and battery friendly
2. Fingerprint and all other things work
No bug(not even choose location bug)

Can you provide the detailed link of the mentioned CM13 ?

Build 20160623
1. No battery bug, its fixed.
2. Wifi mac add is fixed.
3. Recents button working perfectly fine.
4. No fc's on anything.
5. Sot at 82% is showing approx 1 day 9 hrs, so that like more than 4 hrs of constant usge, i don't know, but its better than 20160619 build. On it, sot around 90% was approx 1 day 4 hrs.
6. Gps working, fast and accurate.
7. Voice recognition working perfectly in every app.
8. Sim working perfectly with data, don't know about dual sim as i have only one. Don't know about lte as i am on 3g.
9. Fingerprint is very accurate and fast.
10. IR blaster working fine.
11. Pretty much everything seems fine.
Bugs:
1. Cannot set led notification to blink on custom values like red. It works only when its set on always stay one, as soon as it set to blink, all the colours go haywire.
2. Bluetooth add is still wrong.
3. Headphones working fine, but there is still not sign to show whether its connected or not. Even the volume panel does not show that warning, you know, do not set it at high or you'll go deaf warning.
---------- Post added at 11:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:34 PM ----------
Banmeifyouwant and thestrix are also pusing fast charging and many more better feature in the kernel.
Dual sim and lte are working fine.

2. Based on M kernel = relocks bootloader (i didn't test that one).
4. Miui is a very nice Rom, stable, very battery friendly, but is has a large issue with ram management (at least on 2gb variant). For me, it closes all the background apps almost instantly.
3. I'm using RR build...20. So far so good.
But before flashing any of the marshmallow roms I strongly recommend you to make an EFS backup.
Anyway, everything seems to work fine.
I didn't test the gps though.
Also fm radio apk is not included.
Why I picked it over CM13?
Awesome list of features.
It has most of the gravitybox features included as stock, which means that you don't have to install xposed (of course you can, xposed works with this rom), which will result in better performance.
Btw, after installing some CM13 based roms, check the cpu governor settings (it may be set at performance as default).
The thing I love in all almost pure android roms for this phone is speed and awesome ram management (compared to miui).
So that is my opinion.
The best way is always testing it by your own.

As long as the rr is based on the official cm tree, its do able. The rr which was based on santhos m sources have more problem, and will not be able to continue future development.

I had never tried any custormer rom. Now i was on stock miui 8 cn dev rom 6.6.28 on my 3gb 32gb rom redmi note 3 pro(officially unlocked) without any problem. All works and never found any bug on it. Battery friendly, smooth and stable.

Support on this thread is for XenonHD related issues only.
While we do not mind helping, its getting impossible to sort through issues that are ROM related or not. Persistent non-ROM related issues are best suited for the Verizon Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting Section.
Below is a few things I would appreciate you list when you are having issues so we have as much information as possible when trying to help you with your problems.
Is this a Clean flash
Is this the stock kernel
What firmware revision are you on
What gapps package are you using
Have you had this issue on other ROMs
Do you have any apps that change/modify system preferences (Xposed, etc)
Do you have any task killers installed
First ?
Wow. This ROM runs great!

Best Note 2 lollipop without a doubt!
Holy crap I don't know where to start by telling you, how thankful I am for this!
I'd like to share my experience!
I used this with open gapps mini along with Agni kernal right off the bat on install. I cannot find any problems at all! Its feature rich tons of excellent customizations not offered on any other ROM!
This is how ROM's should be!
Even data has been outstanding,
I did eventually have to delete the APN like on all other Lollipops I have driven today across 3 Midwestern states and my data has been solid!
I'm extremely pleased!
Bluetooth GPS hotspot everything is flawless!
On first boot it took a good 3mins on the logo once it booted oddly it booted to a blackscreen only option I had was with power button to restart or turn off. I choose restart and ever since its extremely perfect!
Thanks!

Callrecorder is there. You should see a record button display while on a call. It will be saved in /sdcard/CallRecordings. Also, I'm not gonna lie to you. Data, like every ROM since 5.0 has its moments.

This is the new daily driver on the wife's Note 2.
I was so impressed, I poked around on c0urier.net and found a build for my S3.... It's my daily driver now too. Thanks for the good work!
Haha @big_edd I thought you was supposed to be the test dummy before your wife gets it? I know I'm comfortable giving this one to my wife. I'm so worn out of hearing something is wrong this or that isn't working lol I seen it on the forum but didn't pay much attention to it just cause it was so new and very little talk. Absolutely worth it! Fantastic ROM!

Just so you know, I don't have an s3 and changing the vib intensity will cause a fc, I'll get that taken care of hopefully soon.
I'm going to give this a whirl...open gapps okay to use with this? Does the stock kernel have O/C capability and if not would Shift-L kernel be okay or would something else be recommended?
@Gulfstream 650 I used Open gappps mini on both devices.
One I used Agni the other I left stock. I prefer Agni cause it seems to be the only Kernal with Volume boost.
Sadly after 48 hours or so the Mobile data started messing up and had to remove that odd APN just like all the other Lollipops on both devices.
Also I've had numerous glitches and actual device freezes and battery pulls today. Both my Notes seem to be running poor. Seems like something is stacking up. But that's outta my league I just now how to mess things up and make problems
Battery drain seems average.
I still like the numerous Modded features compared to others things like SuperSU is preinstalled in the settings screen along with screen recording and numerous other cool features.
Using LayersManager is kinda cool but none seem to be flawless always some kinda text somewhere I can't read after I think I got it fixed lol. Also wired headset button doesn't end call.
Good luck give it a few days to settle in. My first 2 days it ran great.
Do google voice commands through bluetooth work?
Could someone post a link to the gapps they are using with this rom? Thanks guys, excited to give it a try!
UPDATE:
Going to give stock open gapps a try http://opengapps.org/ for anyone else with the same question. I'll report back with a review.
UPDATE2:
Had to install twrp (had philz) to get open gapps to install. Installed the Rom and Gapps and signed into my account, and WOW... I was coming from (don't laugh at me) android 4.3 I believe.. This Rom is blazing fast! I have 5.1 on my Nvidia Shield tablet and Nexus 7, but didn't realize how much I was missing on my phone until now. I haven't ran into any issues yet.
I also had great success for the first few days and now the data is flaking and my BT falls over and won't turn on without a reboot. Think I'm going back to KitKat to see if I have a hardware issue or something that won't work with LP and my Note 2.
@OffTheChainz try installing an updated webview and see if your freezing persists

Just to be clear, I wasn't asking anyone in particular...anyone can feel free to answer my question. Thanks.

Since cyanogenmod removed some features which I used I was looking for some other room which will satisfy my needs. I've tried couple of ROM's provided here but I was very bad surprised. Some users and maintainers probably don't read between the lines, providing unsecure builds to the community by settings Selinux to permissive... or cherry-pick features which can compromise your security. That wasn't problem until I asked " Why permissive?" and the answer was "I like permissive!" ... or some ROM maintainers which answer you just " I am the maintainer and I will do whatever I want ". Well... go on boys!
Anyway... I builded my own ROM. As I use my surnia as one and only I am focusing on stability en security. Because I don't like permissive... this ROM is with Selinux enforced. It is based on Cyanogenmod 13 as it runs more stable than Cyanogenmod 14.1 at this moment. As I do with every software... I will wait about 1 month until I update it to 14.1 - until then much bugs will be gone.
I don't want to bloat this ROM so I will keep the changes as minimal as possible. This ROM is not meant to provide as much features as possible... just pick the best one and include them.
This first build is meant to be tested. It runs stable for 3 days on my phone and I didn't noticed any issues. If you encounter any issues, please let me know.
Every suggestion for features to be included is highly appreciated!!!!
I will update this ROM WEEKLY! As providing nightly builds is not really needed in this case as the changes are minimal and in my case it isn't worth investing my time in setting up a build-bot for it.
Next build I will provide will be reorganized - I will direct all the features in the Settings app under "Extra features" section. I will organise my last changes, commit them to my github and will provide a link with build instructions. It will take me some time as I am working till late next 2 weeks.
Credits
I am not java developer... well I have basic knowledge, but I can't call my self e java developer. I forked features which are already included in some other ROM's and I changed some lines in the code in order to integrate them.

Well... here you go:
https://github.com/rpangelov/android
Features
AdAway - Well... maybe I could have replaced the host file and include it in the build... but you won't be able to stop or update the adblocker. In some cases this can cause problems... so I decided to prebuilt AdAway. AdAway is adblocker which does the same - it replaces your host file with one downloaded from the app server. It provides you the choice to stop the adblocker by restoring your original host file or update it with newer version.
KernelAdiutor - there you got even more options and statistic. It provides even init.d emulation! This is cool if you want to run ViPER4Android for example, which is good! Pay attention - it EMULATES init.d function. init.d is disabled in this build as it is suggested again - for security reasons.
Disable fullscreen keyboard in landscape - you can find this option in Language and Input options -> Advanced settings. Because surnia is 4,5'' screen, I use it sometimes in landscape mode and I don't like when keyboard is fullscreen...

this rom volte supported?
I think u should base this ROM on CM14.1 as it is alot more stable now and also this ROM will gain traction as most users (like me) want to run the latest version of Android for its features and to show their friends (like me). Also as far as security is concerned however secure the ROM is it is rooted so u can't call it secure. Anyway that's my opinion. Good job on the ROM. It works perfectly fine on my device and it is pretty stable. Keep up the good work! I'm not trying to insult ur work, I know it's hard to build ROMs (Speaking from experience and clearly u r better than me at doing it) but I just had a few suggestions and opinions I wanted to share.

About the building... it's not hard, but I needed to clobber couple of times, because I didn't set proper my IDE. The new tools introduced ninja and jack are cool, but I had issues with running jack properly.
I had 3 issues:
1. Hardware fault - as the PC I build on is assembled out of box with lot's of second hand parts I have 2x2GB RAM and 1x4GB RAM. The first issue I came through was segmantation fault's caused by the difference between the Mhz of the RAM modules.... so I had to take out the 4GB module as it was faster than the other two - 1333mhz.
2. As I thought... JACK will run out of memory... and it did. AOSP recommend 16GB of RAM and I have 4 at the moment... which isn't the problem at all, but the builds are generating slow. Anyway... I tried to set 3GB of ram for jack by exporting variable for JACK, but this is probably not that good, because it continued to complain about not enough memory. SO i set this 3GB of ram directly into prebuilts/sdk/tools/jack_server_setup.mk and it was good.
3. What I didn't expected... is that jack wasn't able to reach server, because "the port was used by another PID"... and this PID was JACK it self... so I just deleted ~/.jack-settings . By running jack once more, it will generate exactly the same file with the same settings, but it all works fine. So no idea where this issue is coming from...
I build on Debian Testing as I don't like Ubuntu, and Debian stable doesn't provide the updated packages needed to build Android N. If you have any issues or questions about building CM 14.1 or this ROM, let me know.
I Agree with that. Since CM 14.1 is official I am updating the rom and took me a while, but it is all good.I am testing now the new build - I've already updated the repo's on github. After couple of hours I will upload the new build of all works good. I need to check some log's. Will keep you in touch!

Nice to know. Dude why don't you use Linux Mint. It's pretty amazing and has all the required packages. For all the builds I've done (2) I've used Ubuntu and it has never let me down. Also it works very well on old and unpowered hardware.

I will give Mint a try... maybe. I won't use ubuntu because many of reasons... but lets classify them all by - I dont like company products... so my choise will always be for community developed product. I use Debian ever since version 3.0.... so let's say for more than 10 years, so I am really used to it and won't change it for any other OS as in my personal opinion, this is the most stable peace of software you can get.
Anyway... I completed the build, but it is running unstable because of errors in the landscape mode of the keyboard - I didn't implemented it good... as I am not java developer this is my learning process into java. I have traced the issue, checked out the logs and I know which line is causing the problem. This peace of code was not a problem when I builded CM 13, but some things differs in CM 14.1. Anyway... I've founded different implementations of this feature in other rom's, but I have to research it and try it out, because no other rom has proted this feature to nougat at this moment. I am doing my best to get it work properly, but I can't give exact time how long it will take. It won't be long, but it can take me couple of days to fix the issue.
If you have any other suggestions for other handy features, feel free to share it

So... as cyanogenmod is shutting down... expected move as 3 weeks ago Steve Kondik lefted cyanogen inc. I will move this ROM to "LineageOS" - the cyanogenmod community follower. Check the website - http://lineageos.org/ This is good, because cyanogenmod was making bad deals... and this was bad for the whole android community as Cyanogenmod is the leader in ROM community. Well... in my point of view - bad deals comes when business is involved... the quality of the product becomes second... and the main priority is money profit. Anyway... every community based product will be better. So I am happy because of this move.
Let's be patient and see what's coming. I won't develop this ROM any further as Cyanogenmod (the base of this rom) is shutting down. As I don't know what the new ROM will provide, is for me hard to say how this ROM will continue.
What about this ROM now? Well... I didn't made any big changes to it. If some one wants, I can give a link to test build based om Nougat - it runs stable, with only feature provided - disable fullscreen keyboard in landscape. No prebuilt apps or anything else.

I am editing the post - wait couple of minutes and you will see new link with build CM 14.1 based.
PS: As I don't develop it any further, because I will move it to another base-rom, CM14.1 based build was meant to be tested, but it runs stable. I use it without problems.

Notes
I've been using this on my T585 since yesterday and I have to say it's amazing!
Nice and smooth, tons of options and the home button wake works out of the box, woohoo :victory:
It does have sysserv, so Substratum themes don't need a reboot to get applied. My version did not have the Substratum key added, not sure if this final version does. I'll post the key apk once I find out if it needs to be installed seperately :good:
It's a grrrrrrrreat rom ... try it if you have the time
Screenshots are with Flare Substratum Theme btw
Edit: So I talked to @srgrusso and the key is NOT included. I've added it to my post now - if you want to use Substratum simply install the app and then the attached Substratum Key 1.0.apk. Then you can build + install your overlays and head to the Manager tab, select them and enable. No more reboots
Substratum key removed since it's now included in the rom :good:
How does it compare to stock or rr remix? Stock ROM is smooth as butter. I tried rr remix but some games I play ran poorly on it so I went back to stock and the performance was drastically different.

I can't tell how well it runs games since I've only played PUBG on mine. I never even considered play games on mine because of the specs. I always play my games on my OnePLus 6T. There are some differences between the stock rom and most of the custom roms you find here for the this tablet. Most of the code has been converted to 64bit where the stock rom only runs 32bit code. Also the custom roms are running a different kernel. The only thing I can say is try it and let us know.

correct, i forgot about that. substryatum.key is missing from this rom, maybe srgrussu can include it in source (same was on our lg v30)

I can't tell you that, I have a PC to play games on and never play on my tablet/phone ... plus I was only on stock with this device for exactly 2 days when I got it back in November

No idea how many users actually use Substratum anyway though ... but hey, installing the apk takes 2 seconds, so that shouldn't be a problem
So I went ahead and flashed this rom and I gotta say it runs pretty smooth, just as smooth as the stock rom. I did notice though for some reason when you have gboard in float mode there's a white line that runs across the screen where the full size board would be, it doesn't do that on stock or any of the other roms I've tried.
Overall I say this is a pretty great rom thank you for working/releasing it.

Substratum key has been added. No need to install it anymore.
To see complete change log see link in post #2
I dirty flashed the update without any issues :victory:
These steps should be followed though, if you already have Substratum AND the seperate key installed:
Disable or uninstall all overlays
Uninstall Substratum
Go into apps/all apps, find the Substratum Key (NOT the helper) and uninstall that too.
Then you can dirty flash, wipe dalvik/cache, boot up and install Substratum again.
Now while building the overlays Substratum MIGHT flake out on you and show you an empty screen with that spinning circle, but you should see it still building them all in the notification area. It's simply a visual glitch, but it still works :good:

This probably isn't the right place to ask this question but I don't know where else to ask. When I google "Substratum", looks like some sort of special VPN network. But the XDA forum makes it look like another "theme" UI for Android. Which is it?

Yea, RR is nice too ... but LiquidRemix has more options. Somehow RR Pie lost a ton of options that were still available on Oreo, no clue why.
But luckily we can all like different things ... life would be very boring otherwise :good:

How does it compare to havoc in terms of customization?

ALL CUSTOM ROMS MAIN PROBLEM

i've tried 3 custom rom on redmi 9 and problems are almost same so i want to write for developers and not only developers which problems have every custom rom:
all problem can be solved from only build.prop file:
1. audio call problem (caller not hearing our voice, we not hearing caller's voice, Problem is active in ROMS: DotOs)
2. camera problem(camera screen is fited, croped and quality is so low, Problem is active in ROMS: ALL CUSTOM ROM)
3. automatic brightness
4. duplicate clock, user choose icon and connection icons if we create second user, Problem is active in ROMS: ALL CUSTOM ROM)
5. Player problem (videos isn't playing in apps example: instagram, facebook.messenger, Problem is active in ROMS: Nezuko OS)
2. You can try install other camera apps like ANX or Gcam go mod by Greatness since the preinstall stock android camera is buggy and lack of features.
3. Automatic brightness was working on almost all the ROMs I tried.
5. Videos in apps you mentioned played normally on my phone when I tested the NezukoOS.
I don't know if the ROM or the device side cause the issues you've faced.
Just some thoughts after days of testing many ROMs:
For 3 ROMs you mention I think the Nezuko OS has the best functions in my opinion. I really like DotOS interface but it lacks some feature I want, so not my choice.
I'm now using the Sakura Project R based on Linageos which seems the best suite ROM for me. It's got all the customizations I need and the most important reason for me is face unlock and dt2w is working on this ROM. You can find it on the Redmi 9 Indonesia Telegram.

In my opinion:
All custom roms that are currently here for Redmi 9 are worst.dont missunderstood me i respect the work and the devs are not guilty for the bugs and performance but i swear all here(i do this shi....t since nearly 15 years). At moment the rooted stock Miui 12 is the BEST for this MTK phone.Believe me,ALL IS WORKING AND GAMING IS GOOD EXCEPT SOME HIGH GRAPHIC GAMES BUT FOR THIS YOU HAVE TO KNOW IT BEFORE YOU BUY THIS DEVICE.Cheers!!!!

Really smooth!
The only sensor missing is compass (as far i know that cant be solved?)
Performance is great, batt life looks normal (dont forget all these are old devices, bat life deppends of its lifecycle)
Gonna keep testing it and report.
Love this work! thanks!
Thank you very much leoxsys/PixelExtended.
I clean-installed 20210816 build on my potter(XT1685, retapac),
and couldn't find any problems.
VoLTE(Call/Receive), FM Radio, MOTO Actions works fine,
Music playback with aptX HD codec thru Bluetooth device,
WiFi and GPS signal catching is very smooth,
allover performance is good, and very low Battery drain while phone idle.
Currently my primary phone is Google Pixel 4a (Stock ROM),
Potter is my backup system but can get "Ready to use" condition(almost no excuse) with PixelExtended.

No, It doesn't work in other a11 roms also
I am currently using pixel experience. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-official-10-0-potter-pixel-experience-aosp.3995717/page-64 But the status of that one has been changed from Stable to Discontinued. https://download.pixelexperience.org/potter Any suggestions which alternative ROM to switch to? I would like to be able to update to Android 12, but I prefer an Android which is like a Google stock version. Is this rom pixel-extended a good alternative? What are the differences? Is it easy to switch? Do I have to change TWRP verson, or can I just boot TWRP and flash this zip?
I have just switched from Pixel Experience to Pixel Extended. For some reason my previous rom does use unlimited mobile data (and this also drains battery). Ofcourse I can turn off mobile data to prevent eating up my mobile data, but I thought lets give this rom a try.
It seems everything is working fine. Lets hope this rom is getting updates regulary, and I hope it goes to Android 12 in the beginning of next year. I will use and test it for a while, and will donate if it works for me. Thanks!
This rom works, but I still have the same problem. As soon as I get outdoors (without wifi connection), some process wants to use up all of my mobile data. When I look in "use of mobile data", there are several apps which use kb's, but one is downloading constantly, this proces is called systemupdates. But when I look for updates manually, my smartphone says, I am using the latest rom. Very strange this also happens with this rom. At this moment I turn off mobile data to prevent out of bundle costs. Anyone else have this problem?

Hello dear, I have that same model with 2GB of RAM. As of today, how is this ROM going or which one do you recommend for this model? Do you do some other extra configuration to improve performance and stability (general config, Developer, Magisk, lposed) Any tips would be appreciated.
PS: for my part I recommend lowering the resolution of the phone, the games are more fluid

I am currently using CrDroid. (Moto G5 Plus model XT-1685.) This ROM doesn't have the battery draining, mobile data eating problem. Not sure if it keeps this way. Last update was December 2022.
