Moto Z Droid broken back panel - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Unfortunately my Moto Z fell from my pocket on the ground. Nothing happened to the phone other than the back panel of the phone cracked (attached pic). My heart just sank seeing that.
Just wanted to ask the members here if the panel is fix-able or not. Or do I have to live with it till the next phone upgrade?

That glass panel is held in by adhesive. If you can find a replacement it would be pretty easy to replace.

Hello,
I have the same issue with my brand new Moto Z Powre Edition that fell down and broke back panel (inferior glass). I just want to say that the provided bumper simply doesn't work. A friend of mine told me his Moto Z also fell down and broke the bumper (lucky guy, did not broke his smatrphone). What ever, if someone find the back panel for replacement, PLEASE share here. Good luck for all andd thanks a lot. Greetings form Brazil!!!

The poetic case is how it happened. I have one and quickly stopped using it, got official sony. It puts to much pressure on the device. Try taking your device out of a poetic case without a rainbow swirl effect on the LCD, can't be done. I did unfortunately it created a number of stuck pixels. I strongly advise not using a poetic case on this tablet. It looks and feels nice but breaks device.
My XTZ also has a cracked screen, from being in laptop bag from work to home and not in the Sony case :crying:
The LCD display looks fine, but the touch sensor fires randomly.
I've ordered a replacement screen from ebay which won't arrive for another couple of weeks, but after looking at the Sony teardown on YouTube I'm now pissing my pants just thinking about doing it myself!
Did you get a price from Sony to repair?

ZU Screen is easily broken, is that true?

I'm currently using a S4 but considering switch to ZU. My fr owned ZU but he told me that screen is just very easily to get a crack on it. He aslmost do nothing, just take it out from his pocket. I did some google and found that many people had the same problem.
Darn, I LOVE the big screen on ZU so much.

I've dropped mine twice on to concrete once from just over 1m and the second time from almost 2m from the cab of my 6 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.
The second time did have a flipcover on to save it - neither time ended in a broken screen
I too have drop my ultra twice ones from my bike while riding and another time I drop it. The Basel maybe scratch but the screen intact
I cracked my screen a few months back (a week after I got it) and I didn't even drop it! No idea how it happened, considering it was in my pocket when it happened, but 3 months and $360 later, I got it back and bought an Incipio case and tempered glass screen protector and it hasn't happened again.

Yeah, some people will get a bad one, and I assume Sony has fixed this "issue" on the newer ones.

I cracked my screen while in my pocket. I actually dis assembled my phone today and was surprised by the build. The phones frame is actually poly carbonite plastic with aluminum trim added to the sides. The top and bottom trim is also poly carbonite I'm guessing for the anttenna signal. I'm gonna make a post of my phone disassembly. But the main reason for screen cracking is cause the phone is so big and so thin. The screen glass looks to only be 1- 1.5mm thick so when it flex the glass cracks.

I've had two issues with mine. But none were cracked screen. Holds up fine for me

[Q] Black screen after falling on the floor

Hi guys,
A couple of months ago I had a similar problem like this and it cost me 165 euros. I just hope one of you got the solution for me so I don't have to pay another 165 euros to repair it. If none of you have a solution for me would you please recommend me a low-priced (used is okay) phone so I can hold on til November and get myself a new one along with the telephone contract.
So this happened today. I was at the gym in the dressing room and I put my phone out of my pocket. It fell from my pocket on the floor on one of the sides. It bounced a little bit and then fell straight on its back. Then I saw a couple of blue and green pixels on the bottom of the screen and then there was just a black screen. When it's on and I move my fingers over the menu and back key they light up. When I hit the power key the screen still stays black.
I can't send it to Samsung because I got OmniROM running on it, right?
Greetings,
wesjeex3
Warranty is void. A £5 bumper would have saved the new screen, buy a moto G.

If you completely brick it they won't be able to tell what ROM it was on. Odin can brick a phone really easy
Not recommended but its a easy problem solver and its what I'd do on a last resort. Some would say defrauding I'd say recouping some of the money we spent on an over priced phone.

I wouldn't say it was defrauding. The phone shouldn't have broke by just dropping and bouncing, unless he had dropped it multiple times. I drop my phone all the time and it hasn't broken yet.

That's the funny party. There was a bumper on my S3. The Moto G looks like a sick phone. I might get that one if it's not fixed.

The first time it fell it was broken instantly. After it got repaired it never fell so today was the first time it fell after the new screen. It has fallen 2 times and got broken twice. You can call it bad luck I guess.
I can buy a Galaxy Nexus for 100 euros. Is that worth it or shall I just go with the moto G?

I'd do that because it breaking twice after dropping it twice is ridiculous. I bet this has happened to other owners.

One single crack in screen, straight down the middle.

I picked up my tablet last night after having it connected to the PC for a while. It started acting possessed, making its own touches all over the place. Thought I'd best attempt a reboot and slowly started to see a vertical line appear in front of my eyes, down the centre of my screen with rainbow colouring spread off it when I touched on it.
It turned into a crack in the glass and now I have to attempt a warranty claim after only 3 months. In another post I mentioned some creaking and since noticed a fair bit of flex, even directly inwards. I feel it has a weak body design with the ports top and bottom also creating a weak point in the middle.
Who knows if Sony will cover it or not, but I'll be too afraid to take it anywhere with me either way. I'd be looking for a case that might give more strength than the tablet itself
I'll update on claim process
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
The claim was rejected by fonebiz in Sydney after having to chase up what was even happening with it They advised to contact Sony and the next week sent me a quote which was about to expire, asking if I wanted to pay $253AU or dispose of it. It took me three phone calls to get a basic service request email sent from Sony. I've had to ask fonebiz, please don't discard my tablet in the meantime O.O
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah, the downside of slim is flex, that's why I have a folio case on mine, it provides strength to the tablet and it acts as a stand and cost a few bucks on amazon
Well, on the 27th I had a final warning email from fonebiz, on the 28th I had a..it will be repaired under warranty email and on the 29th I had a dispatch email. I'll see what its like when it gets here. I'll definitely be looking for a stronger case, I just had a silicon one to stop scratches.

I have been testing the tablet for a day and all seems normal. Was returned reset with Lollipop. There is still creaking in the back panel when holding with my right hand. Otherwise, a blacklighting issue that I had forgotten to even mention at all, which appeared whenever using settings or an app with a white background, is now non existent.

Bummer
After all that, month later, my 2 yr old daughter gets a hold of the tablet and drops it, totally shattering the screen. No warranty claim this time.
I've been trying to find a touch panel or even a LCD with touch panel, so I can have a crack at repairing it myself, but I'm having trouble locating apart from unreliable sources on eBay. Does anybody know where I could source the parts?

Ran a Google for sony+tablet+z2+replacement+screen and came up with quite a few places to get a replacement digitizer.
I've dismantled my old A501 tablet several times before and it's pretty much a doable self repair. Good luck.

Yeah, i got past that bit, thanks anyway. I should of been more specific. Its a SGP521 4g lte and require delivery to Australia. I don't think i'm going to find a better option than sending it away to be fixed again for $250. I doubt ill bother with tablets after this. Too easy to break, too difficult to fix. My original galaxy note on the other hand, still going strong.

Pretty sure they all use the same digitizer. But I'm with you on staying away from tablets in the future. Ive got the dreaded green speckles on the display, but so far only shows up on the black and dark screen color. Such a disappointment. I switched after being let down with the Acer a701, and went Sony.
Will probably switch over to a note or equivalent.
Sony have said to contact speedyspares.com in Australia. I have to say Sony have responded positively whenever I email them.

If you protect tablets in cases and use screen protectors they last fine. I've had several over years and years. I've always used a case and screen protector and they've had heavy use and not a single one has broken. Pretty sure they should be kept away from two-year-olds if you care about them!

Me too all my devices have a screen protector even my smartwatch 3 and I have a case on both my z2 phone and z2 tab the official ones never had a problem I even dropped my iPad mini face flat with a screen protector and place a phat Xbox on top of my xperia play which got saved by the screen protector. The only problem I have is that the official Sony case for the z2 tab adds quite a bit of weight

Yeah I noticed that. I now use a rubber poetic GraphGrip case that protects everything but the screen when at home. It's lighter than the Sony case. I use a glass screen protector that will hopefully protect the screen if that gets hit. If I take the tablet out of the house I use the Sony case for extra protection.

The official Z Ultra wear & tear thread

The ZU is nearing its 2 year birthday, I've had mine for about 8 months now. So far I have been more than happy with it, although I do have to say I'm quite disappointed with the build quality. To be more specific, the paint job of the aluminium/plastic parts. It literally starts to fall off/rub away, whereas I still baby my ZU. This puzzles me and tells me there is nothing brushed about the 'aluminum (is it plastic?), just an ordinary paint job. Also, I've noticed that the material is rather weak, getting dents easily.
What is your experience concerning the wear & tear of this device?
I must agree that the paint of the aluminium parts is rather weak, my 5 months old ZU already got some of it torn. In addition it gets easily bended, when I put my phone on a table or sth the right bottom corner is like 1mm over the surface. And it scratches a lot, especially the back, seriously I'm only putting it in or from the pocket with no keys or anything and it looks like some really angry cat wanted to play with it. However the front is untouched, despite using pencil a lot to navigate, but the oleophobic coating have gone just after a month and because of it random touches appears. Aparr from these, I have no complaints and sorry for my English, not my native lang
Regards
I bought my second Z Ultra today
The screen on my July 2013 ZU broke with my thighs pressure while I was driving. I thought it was safe but it cracked.
Service centre in India wanted Rs. 10400 to replace screen. Grey market Rs. 8000. And it would lose waterproofing after replacement. New Z Ultra is Rs. 18500. So I bought my second ZU today (Feb 15 make)
Last time a Leather cover was given free but this time its DK30 magnetic dock which is good. I will keep check on price for screen and when it drops I will replace my broken ZUs screen and gift it to my wife who is using my old Note 1
My new ZU is on 4.4.4 so I am thinking if I should upgrade to Lollipop or not. I dont like Lollipop. I used it on Moto E2 and it looks crap.
I have two Ultra and both are in mint condition. No scratches, nothing. Not a single noticeable defect. They move along in cases but still. Have not experienced any denting or anything else that would put them in a worse position so I am perfectly happy with the quality.
I think mine is just over a year old now
Tons of scratches on the back, and some on the front (i don't use a case or screen protector)
I've got it running the latest slimkat and I've got no complaints with regards to this OS
Might be moving onto the Samsung s6
I use a book style cover to protect mine, and it's still in quite good condition. I reckon on having to buy a new cover every 4 months as the plastic frame which holds the ZU cracks or breaks, particularly at the corner where the USB socket is present and there's not enough plastic to be strong.
There's a ding on the corner near the USB connector where I dropped it and the case's missing plastic wasn't able to protect it.
I haven't removed the anti-shatter plastic film on front or back. You can't see the fine pattern of scratches on the front when the phone is turned on. Sometimes I clean the screen with a slightly damp towel, and if I rub hard it polishes out the scratches a bit.
Battery life is still good, I don't think it's diminished too much. Sony have always had good battery technology (apart from when they had exploding laptop batteries!).
Overall then my XZU has been a good phone and I've had good value out of it as I use it all the time - I don't have a tablet, I go straight for a laptop if I need to do proper work.
The XZU is my phone, ebook reader, email reader, news reader, podcast & music player, GPS mapper, instant messaging console (G hangouts), shopping assistant (checking prices in shops with barcode scanner), movie viewer (netflix), chromecast controller (netflix) and occasionally acts as a game console.
My backplate cracked so I used the extended warranty I bought with the phone to fix it.
Sony said they couldn't replace it because its discontinued so they bought out my warranty and phone for the total amount I paid. So I got a free ultra basically.
I fixed the backplate myself. I'd really like to fix the faux aluminum edges. They sell them online but u don't want to go in blind and dissect my phone.
Almost mint here (everything is perfect except that the screen ASF is shinning just a little less than the back one) after eight months. I have two cases, the plastic one I use 95% of the time and the Krusell leather book one that I only use when I think I need an extra protection.
USB protective flap
The Z Ultra has one of the best build qualities IMHO:good: . I do not have a scratch, paint job issue etc. Only problem I had after a year of use was the USB protective flap:crying:. Until it was ok, I used to wash the phone whenever it got dirty. Although the usb protective flap is available on ebay, I'm skeptical about opening, fearing it might lose the original build. If anyone has any ideas - please share.
I put screen protector on my replacement XZU when the one I purchased was replaced under warranty. Only problem is stuff building up in the cracks; dirt, dust, etc. builds up in the cracks of the body, and I HATE that. I also have the ? lens attachment case that I leave on all the time, where the two upper corners have cracked off.

I don't think you have to dissect your phone for the USB flap only.
Just buy a new one on eBay and replace it by fitting the string attached into its hole. ?
Edit: to stay in topic, my Ultra is a D1 unit, exchanged like one month later for another brand new under warranty, and it's been y daily driver since.
Paint have come off of 3 out of 4 corners, but other than that, the phone is pristine.
You should see my old GS3 (which now has my mother in law): all plastic-aluminum-painted edges are broken in several points, there's no paint on the on/off button anymore, plastic back cracked... ?
Overall, I'm super happy and my phone is still as elegant as was when I first opened the box. ?
My screen got hairline cracks twice. Sony repaired it free under the warranty. I also purchased 3 off ebay with cracked screens for under $100 each. I got them repaired through sony for free. $$$$

the usb flap is one easy replacemnt. just pull out the existing one neatly just a little pressure, make sure to hold the extension plastic that connects to the flap rather than the flap itself. When you get the replacement just insert the new replacement the same way you pulled out the old one:good:

I ordered the flap of eBay and replaced it as per your instructions. Jiffy - my ZU is back to being new. Thanks!
Have been using Z Ultra for almost 1.5 years now but this is my 3rd Ultra. First one was silver color and I used it for about a year and since the paint in the side had peeled off, sold it and bought Lumia 1520 but screen was not upto my satisfaction (Size-wise), so again bought Z ultra Black color. Unfortunately, within a week, my kid threw moto360 and it fell on the ZU screen, it cracked and touch is not working (Thank God, nothing happened to Moto360). I Checked with Sony as it was hardly a week old but since it was physical damage, they said it will cost around $200 to replace the screen
Instead of that, I went and bought a new one for around ˜ $250 during Christmas offer. It has slight scratches on the back as I dont like to use back protection while the front is in pristine condition. Eagerly waiting for p8Max/LeTV Max now, provided it is in my budget!
