Clarity/resolution - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Real Life Review

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

This is where I feel the Mi Max 2 failed big time but I gave it a 3 because you can easily correct the situation without rooting. The stock resolution(DPI) is too high...I didn't get any more stuff on this massive screen then my wife on her 5.5" S7 Edge which is just sad. The good news is you can drop the DPI down in under a minute using ADB commands and now I can pack extra on the screen and am thrilled with it!

Would you mind showing the ADB command for this? And what DPI did you use?

Check out this thread. The command line part is easy. The part I have trouble with is enabling USB Debugging... there are several methods/suggestions in the thread...walk through it and see which combo works for you.

Galaxy S 4 Active.
It looks AWESOME. (And I like hard buttons).
Anyone think it's coming to Verizon?
If so I'm ready to buy. Really ready. No more dead phone in the toilet.
Screen that works in the rain, camera takes pics underwater, etc. Awesome. Bonus: probably better pix thanks to smaller megapixel count.
Ya, I'm super excited about this too. I just bought my S4 last week full retail...but I'll probably end up selling it and buying this one when it comes out. Not having to keep a case on the phone and not having to worry about having plastic baggies with me when I go to a game when it might rain...completely worth it.
Plus it's not a pentile screen, so the screen should actually look *better* than the one on the stock S4.
I dare my asshole friends to push me in the pool again

I know I just got more excited, I just noticed it has an LCD screen. I've always hated AMOLED with a passion. PenTile more so.
Samsung screens are dim, plus they wear out, go yellow, burn in, have tint, blotches at night, colors are not accurate, and then there is pentile. Which is even a bit noticeable on S3 though not quite so bad. And to be fair Note 2 is pretty good, and S4 is too. The worst part is how incredibly dim the AMOLED is, it's nuts. However I have gotten used to the nice black levels, that's one thing I'll miss.
We need this on Verizon.

Is it as bright as an HTC One LCD? I haven't compared but I'd imagine it's not even close.
PenTile used to be my main issue with AMOLED aside from dimness. Yes, I agree that is mostly fixed with higher resolution now, although if you look close you can still see it.
The rest of the issues are still valid, particularly how darn dim AMOLED is and how crappy whites look. Generally I feel LCD is still superior overall, and for all those reasons. And I didn't even mention the black crush/contrast issue which I expect still persists.
This is why Active with LCD has me SUPER EXCITED!!

It's still an issue. This phone is downright dark when outdoors in sunlight. I have to shield the phone if I want to be able to see anything at all on the screen. Next to the iPhone 5 or HTC One the difference is huge when in bright light.
I can't wait for the Active...it's pretty much the ideal phone, IMO. Tough, waterproof, and awesome specs.
Case and point:

LCD FTW. I hope the LCD on the Active is just like the One

Visible digitizer grid

Even indoors, if the screen gets hit with direct light, there is a clearly visible crosshatch pattern across the whole display. Anyone else notice this?
Got to say I'm not too impressed with the screen quality. Light bleed, dead pixels and now this. My much cheaper Redmi 1s has none of these issues. Sure, the colours aren't as vibrant but not sure which I'd choose given the choice.
Don't see any of this, perfect picture from every angle and every light condition

If you get direct light on the screen, you don't see the digitizer? I noticed it within a couple mins of using phone and wasn't looking for it. Never seen a digitizer so easily noticeable before.
I don't think its too much to expect at this price a screen without noticeable light bleeding, dead pixels etc. Honestly I think they used the European promotion to shift these phones with slightly subpar displays. Btw, I think you are overrating Sony's screens. They are known for the same issues I noticed on this Honor 7, even on their flagships.
I noticed this also but it happened to me after I removed stock "screen protector" and replaced with Nilkin tempered glass. I quess stock screen protector somehow filtered grid away.

I still have stock screen protector and also see it. I guess its just coincidence you noticed only after installing Nillkin.
I am very critcal when it comes to display, both with computers and smaller screens. Had there been a visible grid on my H7 I would have seen it, no doubt at all. I never could stand the Sony Trinitron support wires at the old CRT monitors, and a lot of people.never saw them!

I noticed it within 5 seconds of taking the phone out of the box when the screen was tilted towards a light bulb. The digitizier of the Honor 7 seems unique in that it's very visible in artificial indoor lighting.

I have several phones and never seen the digitizer except in bright sunlight. With the Honor 7 I noticed it indoors immediately. Even checking side by side now in same conditions, I can't see the digitizer on any of them except the Honor 7. The screen looks like it has a texture to it when light hits it, not like the usual barely noticeable digitizer pattern. I agree that its not really an issue though, more of an observation.
I think honor 7 is one of the best phones I have had for this. I have just spent a few moments trying to see it and can't. I have always been able to see it before. I still have the supplied protector on also, if that makes a difference.

Well.. into your eyes for straight ahead but tilted at light you can see from normal distance. It is minor issue though. I'm more annoyed with my dead pixel
When I saw your post I started looking for it, with different angles, different lights, etc... I can't see it !
I remember that it was sometimes visible on my Galaxy Note 2 and LG G3, but only with intense sunlight so I'll look again on the Honor 7 next summer I guess
I think the general product quality is the main factor, for example, I often see it (even indoors) on my Onda V989, which is a 130$ chinese tablet. (The tablet is great, but the screen has a weak max brightness).

It is very different looking than any other digitizer, so maybe you are looking for the wrong thing. It is not dots, and not a normal digitizer pattern. It looks more like a light texture on the screen. In daylight it creates a rainbow effect.

Clarity/resolution

The Essential Phone has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Very clean and clear display brought new life to wallpapers
Mine looks great. With a high quality wallpaper (shout out to Backdrops) the device really shines. I was worried about it being LCD rather than AMOLED, however after using it for three weeks now, I still prefer the PH-1's display over my old Nexus 6's display. I've had other people comment on how crisp and beautiful the colors look, even iPhone users who gawk when I tell them the pixel density is greater than any iDevice released (and even not released yet!) I love my PH-1.
have to agree and add that i actually tried a live wallpaper and actually am still using it BECAUSE its so sharp. I NEVER use live wallpapers tried this one for giggles https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxelus.livewallpaper.amoled&hl=en and the PH-1 sold me. Just seems different somehow

Honestly? Display is good but not great. I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to this. Used to Samsung Super AMOLED screens, so any LCD just feels like a downgrade. My wife likes it better though because you can actually turn the screen brightness lower if you're lying in bed reading a book.
I am having trouble picking a wallpaper for this phone. Even my Nexus 6 made these pictures pop better than this phone. Might be a software issue though. When watching videos, it doesn't look that bad. I mean you will only get so much out of an LCD screen. This isn't really anything special.

If you like grey yeah. But I have 3 Essentials (only one I am keeping) and they all have imperfections around the edges of the screen, so with that picture you have the top left might not look perfect, and even then it would look grey rather than black. Not having this issue with the Razer Phone, but the screen isn't as bright as the Essential so who knows. Didn't really have an issue with the Moto Z2 Force either, but I can tell that its a plastic oled rather than a glass one

If you ever feel like building again hit me up and we can do a collaboration. Easier to work on a rom with 2 people than trying to work on something yourself. I was going to start building for this device also only I have very limited time

Do not buy
This is definitely a no buy device! Don't get fooled, the display is catastrophic. See attached pic. I get eye strain and tears in eyes after 1 minute of use. The display is litteraly unsharp, like out of focus. Like your eyes try to focus but cannot.
720p + pentile = disaster

If after 1 minute tears run down your eyes, then i think its time you visit an ophthalmologists! Many other users & i use this device for hours on end, b4 1080p was invented we all used devices with lower resolution with out problems. You should thank this phone for exposing your sensitive eyes.

I had the same issue with low res pentile oled displays few years ago. Turned out that my astigmatism was the reason for discomfort (interestingly no such problem with LCD). Once I started wearing correction glasses, discomfort disappeared. Even if I was still able to see particular pixels, I did not suffer anymore.

Mi A3 pwm flicker

Hello, i am a bit sensitive to amoled pwm flicker on a low brightness. How bad is it on the Mi A3 screen? Is there a workaround (e.g. DC dimming) for that issue? I hope that device's screen would be suitable for reading.
Sorry, what is pwm
google it bro, a method to control screen brightness via pulse-width modulation
Reading on this screen is like stabbing with hot wire in your eye. No joking. Does this screen have PWM? I thought the eye strain comes from the low resolution + pentile matrix.
Dont buy this phone, I have massive eye strain since I bought it. My eyes are red in the evening and itching.
I own 2 Samsung amoled tablets, zero eye strain after reading all night long. With this Mi A3, eye problems start the minute I use it.

I don't know, the eye strain is accumulative I think, you get some tolerance after I while, but when you overdo it, then it gets triggered even after 10 seconds of looking at that phone. Now my eyes are so messed up, that I'am not touching that phone again, only when I receive a call. This phone has to go away ASAP, and I was so satisfied with my MI A1, that I did not except this from Xiaomi.
Maybe Xiaomi will do a software update like they did for the Mi9.

In the reviews it was not mentioned to be PWM. This should be always specified.
It is a Samsung screen.

PWM is widely used as it retains color accuracy with lower brightness. Even some mid-high end Samsung LCD TVs use it. DC switching is more tricky, I don't think that Xiaomi will do any major change for Mi Ax line (just see the screwed up fastboot for example - they did not fix it for years and even managed to cripple it further).
I am extremely sensitive to flickering, but I do not see anything wrong with A3 related to flicker. 720 pentile matrix is another story

Try to increase the brightness and use "dark theme" whenever available. They are easier on eyes. "High contrast" option in accessibility settings might be helpful as well. And last but not least, get your vision professionally checked, you may have more serious underlying problem which is "only" being exposed by this phone's screen.

I'm 99% sure that your problems have nothing to do with the PWM. I suspect that you are more sensitive to lower contrast/less sharp edges. I'd ask him to go see a therapist as well, honestly. Seems like he has more than just vision issues.

I didn't mean it as an insult, I am serious. Healthy eyes (or with right corrective glasses) should not have such serious problems with low res screens. HD vs FHD difference is certainly visible and small details (tiny text) can be harder or even impossible to read on HD, but for "normally" sized text it should be more or less equal. HD AMOLED resembles paper ink with less sharp contours, so it's mostly a matter of "getting used to" than a real problem. This being said, I still wish it had FHD AMOLED

I for one meant it because he's on every thread whining and moaning about it. It's getting annoying at this point.
Btw. those who believe that they are sensitive to PWM of A3 (every person has different threshold) - try using the device at 100% brightness for a while. At 100% there is no PWM involved.
This might be helpful as well, not only for Mi A3, but many other AMOLED phones https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.js.oledsaver
Edit: this app definitely works, no flickering and you can dim your screen to basically any level you want. Highly recommended! Just set all the permissions, "basic physical brightness" to a safe value of 255 and you are good to go.
Its been 1 month and i don't have any eye strain, don't don't really do extensive reading on my phone but ya i do read stuff on it like articles, so not that big of a issue for me
