What extra bloat does the T-Mobile version have? I'm on the edge of buying it. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

So I'm on the edge of buying the T-Mobile Note8, but I'd like to know if the carrier bloat is bad.... I know the boot animation and sound (one can live with it or just root and change it). What else? Can those be disabled, is it bad?

its not horrible, t mobile visual voice mail, t mobile device unlock ap, t mobile caller id and my t mobile pr adapt. you also can't in install facebook, you tube and a few other system apps but I think the unlocked versions they are native as well. also the splash screen on boot up will say t mobile as well. Not as bad a previous t mobile samsungs devices. they used to come with lookout security, amazon, etc.

It's not bad and can be disabled with BK Package Disabler with no ill effects.

I was surprised when I got my Note 8 as I found out that I could actually uninstall some of the bloat, whereas I could not on my S7E. I use Package Disabler Pro to rid me of the rest.

The pr adapt and TMobile app are the pits. Always disable those two at bare min.

V30 US998 unlocked vs. Verizon version...

I'm probably jumping the gun by asking this question now, before the US998 is available, but I'm chomping at the bit to know...
I'd like to buy the unlocked version of the V30, but I understand from the other forums that I may be giving up:
- Verizon HD calling
- Verizon video calling
- wifi calling
- visual voice mail
In trade I'd be getting:
- potentially 128GB internal storage
- no VZW bloat or branding
- all of LG's backgrounds (a reviewer says big red disables many)
- maybe a working FM reciever (?)
Some of these are important to me, some not or can be replaced.
Can you think of any other differences I should be aware of?

You'll get Verizon VoLTE -- but not Wi-Fi nor video calling.
Yes, you can have Verizon voicemail.
Those answers are based on the carrier unlocked LG G6 US997 released earlier this year, from people who have it and use Verizon. You should go over there and ask some questions. That will be the best predictor of the LG V30 US998.
I pasted some of the answers from actual users below.

Getting unlocked phones working on Verizon is still more difficult than it should be. Hypothesis: reps at the local stores don't get a commission on unlocked activations and do get commissions on carrier phones. If you want to avoid technical stuff suggest calling Verizon and threatening to switch to T-Mobile if they can't get it to work, do not go to local stores.
Regarding voicemail, I went with youmail from the play store. You might also be able to get the Verizon voicemail app working, I did not try that since I do not want any lame carrier apps on the device.

Regarding the fm radio. My Verizon branded G6 has the fm radio enabled, you just need to plug in headphones. It works with NextRadio and the LG radio app that I know of. The Verizon version needed files pulled and edited from xda forums to get LG's app working as it does not come with it preinstalled. It wasn't hard to install. An install of NextRadio from the play store just worked. The unlocked version probably includes the LG fm app. NextRadio is pretty snazzy, while the LG App is pretty bland and basic.
I've worked my mind around most things rooted vs unrooted and the biggest problem I have right now is not being able to turn on hotspot on my unlimited VZ plan. this could cause me to return the VZ version if root is impossible which it appears to be. although rooting a phone and playing with it will wipe out the battery prematurely. I've noticed this over and over. not sure I can live without the hotspot option. will absolutely not pay more to VZ to use my own existing plan.

Rooting a phone has nothing to do with battery life. It's just becoming admin of your own phone. The owner of the phone.
Rooting a phone will let you use your hotspot without carrier's permission.
If you mean custom kernels might favor performance over conserving battery vs stock kernel, you have a point. Which might make you have to charge battery more frequently. Thus shorter battery life over a several years period..
However, that is changing! Newer CPU governors like Alucard do a very good job of balancing performance and battery.
One thing you could do is root and run stock firmware, with an xposed module or app that will let you have your hotspot. Again, root by itself does not affect battery life.

LOL.... trust me. viper4android, hotspots, trying all sorts of mods, and yes messing with kernels, changing OS every other week... battery life will get shot... every time, so yes it will... just comes with the territory.
regardless of how you try to fine tune the kernel to conserve. but I'm ok with all of it. I will just be bummed not to get the $200 card and the VR thing. So I guess I have to decide in the next 6 days how important hotspot is vs $300 worth of stuff.

no. it did not. I'm jimmy rigging it by using the wifi extender to trick the hotspot to working but it requires that you connect to a wifi first. data isn't needed on the connect. it's hokey but works almost all the time. so I am now content. LG disabler squashed everything else so the phone is pretty snappy.

Having only used rooted phones for the past 10 years or so, I had a similar quandary, although some of the particulars were different. The arguments in favor of the VZ branded phone were earlier release date, wifi calling, $200.00 discount, and EARLIER RELEASE DATE (I have a thing for immediate gratification). The arguments in favor of the US998 were choice of handset colors and the most important factor: ability to root.
I opted for the VZ LG V30 and have been very hapy so far. As far as the OP's concerns, I can say that the ability to insert a micro SD card eliminates that need for internal storage in excess of 64gb, which is plenty anyway. Also, the LG package disabler (https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/guide-make-v30-faster-smoother-t3693083) and the FM Radio apk (https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/themes/lg-fm-radio-app-download-verizon-v30-t3689294) resolve the bloatware issue and FM receiver issue respectively.
As far as my concerns, the LG package disabler also accomplishes some of the same goals that for which I would want to root my phone. One of the main reasons that I root my phones is too be able to block ads, and I have accomplished that by disabling Chrome and installing Samsung internet beta, as well as by supporting developers by purchasing ad free versions of the apps which I use frequently or finding ad free versions of apps when they are available.
I've mostly gotten over the fact that my phone is silver, especially since it's always in a case anyway.

I have friends who are required to have carrier-branded phones and who cannot root. That's a well written post I'll share with them.
As for color choice I'm hoping LG will sell us the "open market" US988 in black V30+ configuration (or V30+ at all), but I'm becoming skeptical.
Interesting counterpoint, al4d.
There's also the matter of OS update timeliness. And security updates -- do they ever come from the the manufacturer? It seems like only carrier-specific releases get the media buzz.
Lastly, I'm sort of holding out for the Oreo release, just to ensure LG put all their best efforts into it. It would be a shame if 8.0 lands and it's a half-baked mess full of bugs.
Hey @ChazzMatt
Recently I've noticed that I have petty crappy signal and trouble with getting a GPS lock. I remember from the turbo having to flash a modem.
I'm running Stock LG at the moment purely for the camera, is there anything you recommend doing? Ive noticed I cant even change the apn settings.
When I hacked from US998 to VS996, I saw there were more "bars" being shown. Note, however, that "bars" can be changed to reflect different signal levels, so it may not actually be getting more/less signal. If I were careful, I would have looked at the numeric signal, but I missed checking that.
I'm running VS996 on our phones now, partly because of the VoLTE support as well... and all of that is working, so that's good.
I don't think you can flash just a "modem"... but I am interested to hear if this can be done...

Oreo now locks you out of APN settings (it knows what best, supposedly) but you can use an app Shortcut Master or Shortcut Master Lite to manually edit APN settings. Here's how to edit APN using that app. Of course that is NOT the V30 -- but it's still the same technique, and you would want to populate with your own APN information, not what they are using for their carrier. Here are instructions for Verizon on LG V30, at least for MMS.
As for modems, I know there are AT&T and Sprint TWRP flashable modems posted, but not sure about Verizon. You can fire up LGUP and manually flash VS996 modem partitions via DL Partition method, if you want to try that modem. Just UNcheck all partitions except for modems.

I am no longer using T-Mobile, I am using MintMobile and unlocked the phone (there was no reason to do an unlock, I just wanted too because I am going over seas and want to use EU SIM)
But before I unlocked my phone all these options were working
Samsung Facetime
and WiFi Calling
These are the two I noticed that are gone. Now that WiFi calling is completely gone, its a huge game changer for me. Anyways I can get that back? There is nothing available in the settings....

Well I was and still am using Mint Mobile. The phone was locked for T-Mobile and all the features worked just fine. I figured I would unlock it for my upcoming trip to the EU. Now all the features such as WiFi calling are no longer in the settings and I cant toggle them on and off, which is a huge bummer.
Thank you,

wifi calling is carrier dependant and that's one that your current carrier doesn't support even if device does. call mint and ask if they include wifi calling in service plan.. as far as flow, samsung techs can assist soley.
Your service provider does offer wifi calling. Gotta check your fist 8 of imei see if it's on note 8 list.
Wifi calling is in settings > connections> more connection settings and wifi calling should be in the bottom. I have a unlocked Tmobile note 8 on metropcs and it works.
My TMO Note 8 is unlocked and I recently went to the Isle of Man for the TT and was on Sure the whole week ... Wifi calling worked fine. It's carrier dependent. I had no issues at all.

Do I have to take it to the store for them to do it, or can I just call customer service?
The other response is incorrect. Huawei has a whitelist of carrier MCC/MNC for VoLTE support. US carriers are not on it for LYA-L29.
VoLTE working fine in the middle east for the LYA-L29 for those who are wondering.
I don't know about North America though.

Volte works fine on the P20 Pro. Since that phone was never sold or supported in the USA there is no reason US carriers would be on a whitelist.
Volte also works fine on the Xiaomi MI Mix 2 & 2S which aren't sold or supported here.
Same problem in Canada too...the carrier has to work with Huawei to turn the feature on. I upgraded from an S7Edge which WAS VoLTE enabled by the carrier, so the account has the feature, but it did not automatically carry over.
Looks like there will be a few months before we get this, seeing how long it took for P20 Pro.

Hola
Can you please elaborate. For some of our carriers in Canada VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling are only enabled with carrier branded phones. This is particularly true for Rogers and Fido. If you are dealing with Shaw, Telus and Bell I have seen different scenarios that certain non branded phones working ok for VoLTE and other phones not working at all.
I am with Fido and I bought the Mate 20 Pro from them and VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling work.

I'm with Videotron...hence the difference. They have been notoriously slow to enable the feature on new phones.
On the flip side, I was getting VoLTE on my old phone which was NOT bought from them (it was first registered on Koodo).
Rogers does not allow that -as you mentioned.

A follow-up on my own post:
- we all knew the Canadian version L0C is NOT dual-SIM - I finally got a chance to test this. Bummer.
- I put in my phone a Rogers SIM and VoLTE and VoWiFi WERE INSTANTLY ENABLED. So the software supports it, has to be enabled by the provider via the SIM cfg. Somewhat positive news - as we all thought, Rogers would only allow VoLTE on the phones they sell, the test proved this is not the case.

I can definitely tell that the call quality is a LOT better in my case with VoLTE on, as it uses HD codecs (G.722).
You can try for yourself by turning VoLTE ON and then play with WCDMA vs LTE settings...one will disable it right away. In my case even the call button in the dialer shows HD.
And yes, the damn icon is hideous and won't go away even with System Tuner.

MintMobile does provide Volte but they have no idea which phone models it works on so they don't advertise Volte. I had Volte functionality on MintMobile with One Plus 5, Essential PH-1, Xiaomi Mix 2 & Mix 2S, and Huawei P20 Pro.
But it does not work with this phone.
On Telus, the first time I set the phone up it made me jump through a hoop where I went to a Telus site and enabled the VOxxx stuff. Strangely, it seemed to be kinda random whether it was 'on' or not, and before the last 2 updates I don't think you could even trust the icon to be telling you the truth. I'm not sure why this feature is a big deal, codecs or not the voice quality seems fine on this phone regardless. Some people claim that enabling any of the VO stuff gobbles battery, I haven't really noticed.
Much like the AOD, it is sad that we have almost no control over the icons at the top - especially when space is at such a premium there.

Question T-Mobile 5G on Motorola Edge+ 2022

Hey. I'm thinking about getting the Motorola Edge+ 2022 on T-Mobile, but I'd want to know what it's capable of on said network: since T-Mobile released Voice Over 5G not too long ago, can the phone successfully make a 5G call (not a VoLTE or EPS call), and can it also do carrier aggregation between band n71 and n41? Any help would be nice, thanks
Yes, I have Edge+ 2022 on T-Mobile.
You need to do a bit work to fully enable SA 5G
Now VoNR is on by default.
It can achieve N41 on SA
Mingkee can you provide some instructions on how to "do a bit of work" to enable these features? I'm also on TMO and want to ensure I'm getting the same capabilities.

I recently also purchased and unlocked boost mobile variant of edge plus 2022. Have you had any lucky flashing the retail US rom?
No I can't get any specifics on the factory rom so I just shut off the boost mobile apps and put it on Metro by T-Mobile, got in the hidden menu and changed some things here and there, I noob nerfed it... If I had the rom that I needed then I'd try to finish it but there's like 10 different roms on EF and apparently I don't know the lingo to get the factory rom, the admins over there are not trying to help anyone, I messaged one that acted like he worked for boost mobile.
We need step by step lol. I'm mainly concerned about slow to no update at all since it's in dish channel even though our phones are network unlocked.

My new, unlocked Edge+ that I am planning on activating on T-M is arriving this weekend.
If you can pop in a sim and it's not asking for a code go through the apps and disable carrier app, Network companion and all boost overlay apps by turning off the open by default switches, dial *#*#4636#*#* go to NR options from the top option and pick auto, in my are it switches from sa to nsa, depending on the carrier you might want to make sure your carrier is using NR for calls, make sure its not saying Rcc in error, with Metro you can use ipv6 basic sim settings or T-Mobile apn in settings, under the 4636 hidden menu set the network from NR, LTE, Wcdma to NR,LTE,gsm, wcdma or unknown. Basically Unknown is the best option because if you switch carriers it will pick the correct configuration, if said new carrier uses LTE for voice calls it might be needed to disable VoNR so your not burning data on calls, at this point my ram is at 3 or 4 instead of 5 with the boost settings, rcs chats are registered and my signal is maxed out using 5GUC. It just takes some research and it can be run perfectly on the crappy boost firmware, it just takes some time to work with. If you get stuck make sure you are backing up everything and if you have problems do a wipe from the fast boot and start over. Look up and do your research on the stuff you turn off, virus total might show you some apps not being utilized. This is the best I can do at this point.

Maybe a build# would help to be added to this thread, most ppl will probably use that build for the best performance. I'd appreciate it even though my boost firmware is up and working on Metro I haven't got a security update since 2/23 all these comments on settings I've made are going to apply to the U.S. networks.

Ebay seller had bought it as a new Boost phone; and when they unlocked it, still claiming it was new, they started the clock at Motorola as of March. So when I got it, I immediately checked to see if I could add Accidental Damage; but upon finding that the 12 month warranty would expire in March 2024, and I couldn't add the extra insurance, I immediately requested/was approved for a return. So I'm back on the market...for a new Edge+ 2022.

That's a tough break, I appreciate the update, I activated on Metro but the Metro rep claims running the T-Mobile apn settings will send me the new updates but I have none up to this date. Usually fota updates are sent at night so hopefully overnight I might receive one, it does say dish channel on mine as well but all of the boost overlay system extensions have been turned off and the matching settings are turned on from another Metro/T-Mobile phone I have, I feel like something in the actual boost firmware is blocking the updates because dish is using some shady public networks on these phones, I'm not sure if it's to support other phones or what but my data seems to be correct so I don't think my phone has any attachments to dish/boost. If I get updates I will put notification to the thread. If you want to run on T-Mobile just get the unlock code from boost because considering you purchased the phone used under U.S. law their unlocking policy does NOT apply to used phones, that is how I got my unlock code to switch to Metro and using T-Mobile apn settings. Hope this helps like I said will update if I'm updated.
I reached out to another seller (selling 10 fons) on Ebay; and based upon what they said, and description of two other "new and unlocked" Edge+s, it seems like all of them at good prices are sourced from Boost. I think I'm going to get one directly from Moto.
Keep me updated on the build number, it seems no one knows the factory build. Thanks

It's going to depend on what area you're in, I'd write them all down and just put them all in, it's only going to pick up the ones that are in the sim I'm 90% sure, then if it doesn't pick up SA then you'll take your band list you disabled and simply re-enable them. My phone actually works better on a speed test with NSA, with the latest merging networks it seems carriers might be switching to NSA unless your on Att or Verizon your device is probably not going to pick up SA, it's a way overhyped network choice IMO, my home is brick and when standing in the middle of it NSA goes in and out and it's only 1300sqft, I can't see SA making it through brick, my advise is if your picking up a good NSA signal just use it as lame as it sounds. My device opens pages quicker than a kid abusing a book at the library.

Question Missing features on unlocked version verizon

My s22 didn't have none of the issues I'm having now with features. The only difference was I had a physical Sim vs esim and both unlocked.
1. No volte option
2. No video call option
3.samsung messages no enabling RCS
4.

This sounds like it's not properly provisioned to use those features. I would contact Verizon to make sure your phone is properly registered and that the sim allows those features.

You'll probably have to flash Verizon firmware if you really want those features.

sorta defeats the purpose of the unlocked version as in I do need those features due to family out the country that's why I thought they had cleared all this up this year apparently they have not just sad really......Apple sales unlocked phones daily no issues at all...Google should have built out their data base plants like apple and not rely on some carriers to do what is right...just sayin

No I think you need to factory reset which sucks but have the regular Verizon sim card in your phone and it should have all the features on your phone upon activation.
This has been going on for a long time. There were threads about this on S20U and S22U forums. If you are using an U.S. Unlocked phone without the Carriers Firmware sometimes you miss out on carrier specific features. Seems to prove my point since you saw the store Verizon Phone phone with the options but not yours.
I can confirm that I have all of those features on my unlocked S23U, model SM-S918U1 using a Verizon SIM.

Also just now added a Verizon eSIM to my S23U to test and I can confirm all of the features are working on my end.
One thing of note - If registration is successful, the phone will prompt you to restart device in order to activate the features associated with the SIM. I do believe this process can get hung up or something happens that prevents it from working right (I experienced that before on previous phones) - which I think you'd need to try resetting the network config and the SIM settings and go through the process of re-adding the SIM or eSIM.

I've had the unlocked s21 ultra s22 ultra and now the s23 ultra and I never had any luck getting those features to work on any of them. The only time they worked was when I flashed the Verizon firmware. Then I lost the Samsung cloud and caller ID and spam functions. So I just resolved myself to not have those features and enjoy my unlocked phone. One other thing to note when I did have RCS on Samsung messages with the Verizon ROM it only did RCS between Verizon phones. If you do figure out how to get this working let me know cuz I'd be interested in trying it too.
Thank you

That's odd. I had the same problem with T-Mobile, but when I inserted the T-Mobile sim, it downloaded the provisioning and everything worked. It sounds to me like the provisioning possibly may not have downloaded. I'd say try having them send provisioning to your phone. If you can't get them to do it, try a different carrier's sim card, so that it downloads something else, then go back to the Verizon one, so that it pulls it down again. Maybe that will work.
I only buy unlocked because the last time I paid in full a Verizon phone they tried to tack on a $30 upgrade fee.

I'd recommend doing a factory reset then and re-adding the Verizon SIM or eSIM, and make sure to restart when prompted so the phone can install the features. You should not have to flash Verizon firmware to get those features to work on the SM-S918U1.
